Crawford's agent, Joel Wolfe, said Tuesday that his client intends to continue his playing career in 2024, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crawford batted just .194/.273/.314 over 320 plate appearances with the Giants in 2023 and will turn 37 years old in January, but Wolfe told reporters at the GM Meetings in Arizona that "several teams have called" him about the veteran shortstop since he officially became a free agent earlier this week. Wolfe went on to note that Crawford "would consider" playing second or third base, so perhaps he'd be open to operating in a utility role in 2024 if such an opportunity were to present itself.... Giants' Brandon Crawford: Returns for season finale
Crawford (hamstring) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at shortstop and batting leadoff Sunday against the Dodgers. The 36-year-old landed on the shelf with a hamstring strain Sept. 21 but will rejoin the lineup for the final game of the regular season, and potentially his 13-year career with the Giants. Crawford has a .197/.276/.319 slash line in 93 games this season and is scheduled to become a free agent this winter.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Expected to return for finale
Crawford (hamstring) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's game against the Dodgers, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports. Crawford was placed on the IL on Sept. 21 with a right hamstring strain, but he's pushing to return for the season finale. Assuming he endures no setbacks with his hamstring and is activated Sunday, he could be making the final start of his 13-year tenure with the Giants. The 36-year-old is set to become a free agent this winter, and while he has yet to decide whether he wants to continue playing in 2024, if he chooses to forgo retirement he likely won't have much of a market after producing a lowly .595 OPS over 316 plate appearances thus far in 2023. Marco Luciano and Casey Schmitt figure to be the top options to replace Crawford at shortstop next season.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Lands on 10-day IL
Crawford was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a right hamstring strain, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crawford suffered the injury Wednesday in what could wind up being his final game in a Giants uniform. The 36-year-old impending free agent is eligible to be activated Oct. 1, but that is the last day of the regular season and it's unclear whether he'd be healthy anyway. Marco Luciano and Tyler Fitzgerald have both been brought up from Triple-A Sacramento to cover at shortstop down the stretch. Paul DeJong was given his release.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Exits with tight hamstring
Crawford was removed from Wednesday's game in Arizona due to right hamstring tightness, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crawford may have tweaked his hamstring on a second-inning groundout, as Paul DeJong took over at shortstop for the Giants before the bottom of the third. This could wind up being a season-ending injury for Crawford even if it proves to be relatively minor, as the Giants only have 10 games left to go and have probably fallen too far back in the NL wild-card standings.... Giants' Brandon Crawford: Hits rare home run
Crawford went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Sunday's 11-10 win over the Rockies. Crawford came through in a big way with a three-run blast off Matt Koch in the sixth for his seventh home run of the year and his first since Aug. 1. Crawford has just two extra-base hits in 40 plate appearances in September as he continues to hold down a part-time role. The 36-year-old has struggled to a slash line of .196/.276/.319 and will look to provide any spark he can as the Giants make a push for a wild card spot.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Resting during nightcap
Crawford will be on the bench for the evening portion of Saturday's doubleheader against the Rockies, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crawford went 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored in the afternoon game. The 36-year-old won't be asked to start two games in one day, so it will instead be Paul DeJong who handles shortstop in the nightcap.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Out against southpaw
Crawford is not in the lineup for Wednesday's contest against the Guardians, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. He'll yield to Paul DeJong at shortstop versus a lefty, as Crawford often does. Crawford has been helpless versus both righties (.584 OPS) and lefties (.589 OPS) this season.... See More ... Giants' Brandon Crawford: Sitting against lefty
Crawford is absent from the lineup Friday versus the Rockies. Paul DeJong will cover shortstop and bat eighth against left-hander Ty Blach. Crawford is slashing just .200/.271/.320 in 281 total plate appearances this year and should continue to sit versus southpaws.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Taking seat against southpaw
Crawford is not in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs. Crawford has been in a strict platoon at shortstop with Paul DeJong since returning from the injured list last week. It will be DeJong at short for this one versus rookie lefty Jordan Wicks.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Sitting out against lefty
Crawford is absent from the lineup for Monday's game against the Cubs. It will be Paul DeJong getting the start at shortstop versus southpaw Justin Steele. Crawford returned from the injured list Friday and has been on the bench both times the Giants have faced a lefty.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Sitting Saturday
Crawford isn't in the Giants' lineup Saturday against the Padres, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Left-hander Blake Snell's presence on the mound for San Diego will force the lefty-hitting Crawford to the bench. Paul DeJong will start at shortstop instead and bat seventh.... See More ... Giants' Brandon Crawford: Activated, in lineup Friday
Crawford (forearm) was activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crawford will start at shortstop and bat eighth against the Padres following a two-week absence to heal a minor left forearm strain. The 36-year-old has slashed just .194/.264/.318 across 270 plate appearances when healthy this season.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Could be activated this weekend
Crawford (forearm) is expected to be with the Giants in San Diego this weekend and could come off the injured list then, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crawford did some hitting without issue Tuesday and will have another hitting session Wednesday. It sounds like he will be activated without going out on a rehab assignment first, and with rosters expanding Friday, he could rejoin the club without a corresponding move. Crawford has been out since mid-August with a left forearm strain.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Set to hit Tuesday
Crawford (forearm) is expected to resume hitting Tuesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Crawford has not hit since landing on the injured list earlier this month, but it appears he is nearly ready to do so. He is eligible to be activated Tuesday, so if everything checks out after he gets his cuts in there is a chance he could be reinstated this week.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Minimum IL stay possible
Crawford (forearm) believes he'll be ready to return from the 10-day injured list right around when he's first eligible Aug. 29, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Giants manager Gabe Kapler was a bit more cautious, saying Wednesday only that he thought there was enough time left in the season for Crawford to contribute. Crawford landed on the IL over the weekend with a strained left (non-throwing) forearm. The team has signed Paul DeJong as a stopgap at shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: MRI shows mild forearm strain
An MRI taken Monday on Crawford's left forearm revealed a mild strain, Evan Webeck of The San Jose Mercury News reports. That's better than some of the other possible diagnoses, but there remains no timetable as to when the veteran shortstop might be able to return to the Giants' active roster. He was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday and San Francisco signed Paul DeJong to a major-league contract Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: MRI on tap
Crawford (forearm) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. The MRI should shed light on the severity of Crawford's left forearm strain while also helping to inform a treatment plan for the shortstop, who was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday. For whatever length of time Crawford is sidelined, the Giants are expected to turn to Johan Camargo and Casey Schmitt as their primary options at shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Heads to IL with forearm strain
The Giants placed Crawford on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a left forearm strain. Crawford will be eligible for activation beginning Aug. 29, but given that the injury is to his throwing arm, he could be at risk of missing well beyond the minimum 10 days. The 36-year-old has endured a rough 2023 campaign, slashing .194/.264/.318 with a career-worst 26.7 percent strikeout rate across 270 plate appearances. Casey Schmitt and Johan Camargo will likely be the primary replacements at shortstop while Crawford is on the shelf.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Brandon Crawford: Not starting Saturday
Crawford isn't in the Giants' lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. It's been a tough season for Crawford so far, highlighted by the fact that he is just 1-for-28 since Aug. 5. Johan Camargo will fill in Saturday and bat eighth as the Giants search for more production at shortstop.... See More ... See Less
