• Padres' Jose Iglesias: Strikes deal with San Diego

  The Padres agreed to a minor-league contract with Iglesias on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. He'll be paid $3 million if in the majors, with $1 million more available in incentives. Iglesias had something of a career revival with the Mets in 2024, slashing .337/.381/.448 in 85 games during the regular season before slumping to a .488 OPS over 12 playoff games. Iglesias is likely to win a roster spot in San Diego and should see a decent number of starts along the infield, allowing other regulars to see some action in the designated-hitter spot.

The 34-year-old infielder has been remarkably productive since joining the team in late May, and he's slowed down only a little in the second half, slashing .278/.326/.329 over 86 plate appearances since the beginning of August. Iglesias offers effectively no power and only a little speed, but consistent playing time will still give him some fantasy upside in deep formats.

The veteran infielder got the start at second base and batted sixth, and he kept up the offensive production that has pushed him into a regular role. Even with Jeff McNeil turning things around at the plate, Iglesias has started eight of 13 games so far in August, batting .313 (10-for-32) with two doubles, three RBI and four runs. The lack of counting stats makes him tough to roster in shallower formats, however, and with Starling Marte (knee) potentially returning from the IL this weekend, Iglesias could find himself relegated to the short side of a platoon with McNeil at the keystone.
