Machado underwent surgery Tuesday to repair the extensor tendon in his right elbow, Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press reports. Machado's estimated recovery timeline is between 4-to-6 months. While that likely means he will be sidelined for the vast majority of spring training, there is a chance he'll be ready to go for Opening Day in 2024.... See More ... See Less

Padres' Manny Machado: Sitting again Sunday
Machado is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the White Sox. Machado will sit for the second straight game to close out the season for San Diego. If the 31-year-old doesn't make an appearance off the bench, he'll close the 2023 campaign with a .258/.319/.462 slash line, 30 homers, 91 RBI and 75 runs in 138 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Idle Saturday
Machado isn't in the Padres' lineup Saturday against the White Sox. Despite going 11-for-22 with two homers and seven RBI over his last five games, Machado will sit down for the penultimate game of the season Saturday. Matthew Batten will start at third base, and Juan Soto will operate as the DH while Jurickson Profar starts in left field.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Provides insurance in 10th inning
Machado went 3-for-5 with two RBI in Wednesday's 5-2 extra-inning win over the Giants. Machado's third hit of the game was a two-run single in the 10th inning to give the Padres some breathing room. He's gone 10-for-17 with seven RBI over his last four games, but he's also rested regularly while nursing an elbow injury in September. Machado has a .258/.320/.465 slash line with 30 home runs, 91 RBI, 75 runs scored and three stolen bases over 137 contests this year.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Not in lineup Tuesday
Machado is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Giants. Machado has been limited to DH duties since the beginning of September because of a right (throwing) elbow injury that may eventually require surgery. Juan Soto will serve as San Diego's designated hitter Tuesday in San Francisco as Matthew Batten covers third base. Jurickson Profar is playing left field.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Not starting Sunday
Machado is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Cardinals. Machado has missed a few games lately and has largely been limited to serving as the designated hitter in September due to an elbow injury, and he'll take a seat after the Padres' eight-game win streak was snapped Saturday. Xander Bogaerts will rest his legs as San Diego's designated hitter while Ha-Seong Kim works as shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Powers offense Friday
Machado went 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in Friday's 4-2 win over the Cardinals. Machado twice put the Padres ahead, launching a solo shot in the sixth inning and a two-run blast in the eighth. The third baseman now has five long balls over 15 games in September, giving him 30 homers for the second consecutive season. It's also the seventh time he's reached that mark in his career. He's added a .253/.316/.465 slash line, 87 RBI, 75 runs scored and three stolen bases through 134 contests. Machado continues to be locked in at designated hitter due to an elbow injury that is likely to need offseason surgery, but he'll probably remain in the Padres' lineup at least until they're mathematically eliminated from playoff contention.... Padres' Manny Machado: Returns to lineup
Machado (elbow) is in the designated hitter spot and batting fourth versus the Rockies on Wednesday in his return to action, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Machado has been out of the lineup a few times this month and has been limited to DH duty when he does play because of a nagging elbow issue which will likely require surgery eventually. He'll gut it out for this one, though.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Out of lineup Tuesday
Machado (elbow) is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Rockies. Machado served as the Padres' designated hitter in Monday's series opener versus Colorado, but he has an elbow injury that will eventually require surgery and could be facing an early shutdown. Juan Soto will take a turn in the DH role Tuesday as Eguy Rosario covers third base.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Elbow surgery looking likely
Machado will likely require surgery on his ailing right elbow, and he could undergo the procedure before the campaign comes to a close, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Machado will serve as the designated hitter in Monday's game against the Rockies, so he will not shut things down immediately and will presumably continue playing as long as the Padres remain in playoff contention. However, his season could come to an early end at some point, and if he undergoes the procedure his absence could extend into next season, as according to Marty Caswell of Sports 760 he would likely be looking at a 6-to-7 month recovery timetable.... Padres' Manny Machado: Gets Saturday off
Machado will be on the bench for Saturday's game against Oakland. Machado finds himself on the bench for the third time in six games. That might be related to the elbow soreness that has limited him to designated hitter duty throughout September; with the Padres now 6.5 games out of the final NL Wild Card spot, they aren't incentivized to push Machado at all and risk further injury. Luis Campusano will be the designated hitter Saturday, with Brett Sullivan taking Campusano's usual spot behind the plate.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Takes seat Wednesday
Machado is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Dodgers. Xander Bogaerts will also get a breather as the Padres play out the string on a highly disappointing 2023 campaign. Eguy Rosario is filling in at third base for Machado on Wednesday in Los Angeles and Ha-Seong Kim is playing shortstop.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Blasts pair of homers
Machado went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI in Monday's 11-8 win over the Dodgers. Machado has hit safely in seven of nine games in September, going 12-for-38 (.316) with four multi-hit efforts. The third baseman popped a solo shot in the fourth inning and a two-run blast in the sixth to help the Padres pull off a comeback Monday. For the season, he's up to 28 homers, 84 RBI, 72 runs scored, three stolen bases and a .252/.315/.460 slash line over 128 contests. Machado continues to serve as San Diego's designated hitter while playing through tennis elbow.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Receives rare day off
Machado is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Astros. Machado started all 87 games since he returned from a fracture in his left hand in early June, though he's exclusively served as San Diego's designated hitter in September while managing tennis elbow. Matt Carpenter will take over the DH spot Sunday while Eguy Rosario starts at the hot corner.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Homers in win
Machado went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored in Sunday's win over the Giants. Machado's solo shot in the fourth inning was his 26th long ball of the year. However, in his previous 30 appearances since the start of August, he went deep just five times while posting a .645 OPS. His disappointing season line now sits at .249/.313/.454 with 45 extra-base hits and 79 RBI through 527 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Goes deep in loss Friday
Machado went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk Friday in a loss to the Brewers. Machado smashed a 404-foot solo shot to center field in the fourth inning for San Diego's first run. The third baseman has picked up his power of late, going deep four times over his past six games. He's now at 25 homers on the season, a mark he's reached every year since 2015 with the exception of the condensed 2020 campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Hits 24th homer
Machado went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Monday's 6-2 victory versus Miami. Machado produced the game's first run with a first-inning sacrifice fly and tacked on a solo shot to center field in the fifth frame. The long ball was his third over his past three contests following a cold 12-game stretch during which he went homerless and batted .146. Though Machado's season .251/.317/.462 slash line is well below his norm, he's still been pretty productive with 24 home runs and 74 RBI over 476 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Goes yard twice in matinee
Machado went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in a 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Getting the start at DH due to accumulated bumps and bruises, including a bout of elbow soreness, Machado's swing seemed to be in peak form as he took Merrill Kelly deep to left field in the first inning before slicing a Kevin Ginkel fastball over the right-field wall in the eighth. Machado was back at third base for the nightcap, and while he went 0-for-4, the fact that he was feeling well enough to play defense is a strong sign his health issues are minor.... See More ... Padres' Manny Machado: At DH again due to tennis elbow
Machado is serving as the designated hitter for the second straight game Friday due to soreness in his right elbow, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. It's tennis elbow that Machado is dealing with, something he has battled sporadically over the last couple years. He has also been relegated to the DH role recently due to a tight hamstring. Machado's slashed only .175/.262/.298 so far in August while dealing with the multiple minor injuries. Ha-Seong Kim is at third base Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Manny Machado: Managing hamstring tightness
Machado is batting cleanup and serving as the Padres' designated hitter for the second straight day Monday as he deals with a tight right hamstring. According to Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union Tribune, Machado tweaked his right hamstring while running from first to third base in the eighth inning of Saturday's contest. The issue wasn't serious enough to keep him out Sunday's lineup, but he served as San Diego's DH rather than taking his usual spot at third base. That will be the case again Monday, as Ha-Seong Kim will start at third while Jake Cronenworth plays second.... See More ... See Less
