Gray agreed to a three-year, $70 million contract with the Cardinals on Monday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The deal also includes a $30 million club option (or $5 million buyout) for 2027. St. Louis will also forfeit a draft pick and international bonus pool money as a result of signing Gray, who was given a qualifying offer from Minnesota before becoming a free agent. Gray is coming off an American League Cy Young runner-up finish in 2023 with the Twins, having collected a 2.79 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 183:55 K:BB over 184 innings. He could be the final piece of a rotation makeover for the Cardinals after they announced deals with Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson last week.... See More ... See Less

Twins' Sonny Gray: Starting Game 3 of ALDS
Gray will start Game 3 of Minnesota's ALDS matchup versus the Astros on Tuesday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Gray's next postseason start will come after Bailey Ober and Pablo Lopez, who are slated to start the first two games of the series, respectively. Gray faced Houston twice in the regular season, giving up four total runs while striking out 16 batters and walking four through 13 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Tabbed as Game 2 starter
Gray will start Game 2 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. Gray, who is a free agent this offseason, finished strong with a 1.54 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 36 strikeouts in 41 innings over his final seven starts. Pablo Lopez is starting Game 1 for Minnesota.... Twins' Sonny Gray: Sharp over four innings
Gray did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over four innings against Oakland while striking out four. Gray allowed three hits over the first two innings, with the last one driving home JJ Bleday to give the Athletics their first run of the game. However, the right-hander would not allow another hit until being relieved by Kenta Maeda to start the fifth. Gray now finishes the month of September with a sparkling 2.00 ERA and 27:4 K:BB as the Twins prepare for the postseason.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Hit with tough loss
Gray (8-8) took the loss Saturday, allowing one run on four hits over six innings against the Angels. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter. Gray was lights-out for most of the day, outside of a home run he surrendered to Jo Adell to lead off the fourth inning. Unfortunately for the right-hander, he still got stuck with the loss due to the Twins failing to provide any run support. Gray has now allowed one run or fewer in three consecutive starts and in six of his last eight, though he's just 3-3 over that stretch. He also has not walked a batter in each of his last two outings and carries a 1.96 ERA in September following Saturday's performance.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Throws seven scoreless in win
Gray (8-7) earned the win Sunday, allowing five hits and zero walks over seven scoreless innings against the White Sox. He struck out six. Gray was staked to a three-run lead in the fifth, then cruised from there to earn his eighth win. It was an efficient and relatively stress-free outing for Gray, who never allowed more than one baserunner in an inning and needed only 81 pitches to complete seven frames. In 30 starts covering 174 innings, the veteran Cy Young contender is first in home run rate, allowing 0.36 per nine, and second in the American League with a 2.84 ERA. However, his eight wins are lower than any of the other top 20 pitchers who qualify for the ERA title. He's next scheduled to take the hill during a weekend series at home against the Angels.... Twins' Sonny Gray: Takes loss in short outing
Gray (7-7) allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over four innings Monday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Rays. Gray gave up a run in each of the first and third frames. He failed to complete five innings for just the third time this year and the first time since June 15. He's allowed fewer than four runs in nine of his last 10 starts, registering a 2.63 ERA during that span. Gray now owns a 2.96 ERA with a 165:54 K:BB through 167 innings. His next outing is lined up to be on the road against the White Sox.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Logs quality start in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over six innings against the Guardians. He struck out four. The veteran righty pitched well Tuesday, save for surrendering a two-run homer to Bo Naylor in the third inning and a sacrifice fly to Myles Straw in the fifth. The quality start was Gray's eighth in his last nine outings, as he has compiled a 2.65 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 54:10 K:BB across 57.2 innings during the impressive stretch. The 33-year-old hurler is tentatively lined up to face the Rays at home early next week.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Hurls seven shutout frames
Gray did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three hits and one walk over seven scoreless innings against the Guardians while striking out five. Gray surrendered a leadoff double to Steven Kwan to open the game before retiring the next 13 batters he faced. The right-hander allowed just three hits on the afternoon but was still unable to log his fourth win this month due to a lack of run support. Gray has now pitched at least six shutout innings in two of his last four starts while it was his second time this season hurling seven shutout frames. He's also logged quality starts in seven of his last eight outings.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Takes tough loss
Gray (6-6) took the loss Saturday, allowing four runs on four hits and three walks over 6.2 innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out seven. The 33-year-old righty was perfect through 5.1 innings, but an infield single by Liover Peguero started a three-run Pittsburgh rally in the sixth. Gray was chased from the game with two outs in the seventh after issuing a pair of walks, one of which came around to score later in the frame, charging the veteran hurler with his fourth earned run of the contest. In seven starts since the All-Star break, Gray owns a 3.74 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 46:11 K:BB across 43.1 innings. He is projected to face a tough Rangers lineup at home next week.... See More ... Twins' Sonny Gray: Grabs sixth win
Gray (6-5) earned the win Sunday, allowing two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings against the Phillies. He struck out seven. It's Gray's fifth consecutive quality start -- he's now 2-1 with a 2.61 ERA in that span (31 innings) while racking up 33 strikeouts. Overall, the veteran right-hander's ERA is down to 3.04 with a 1.22 WHIP and 140:47 K:BB across 11 starts (136.1 innings) this season. Gray's currently scheduled to make his next start at home against the Pirates.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Strikes out 10 in loss
Gray (5-5) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over six innings against the Tigers. He struck out 10. Gray was excellent Tuesday, recording double-digit strikeouts for the first time since April 7 while surrendering just a pair of earned runs in the fourth inning. However, in what's become a theme for Gray this year, the Twins failed to generate any run support, sticking the veteran right-hander with the loss. Gray's now delivered four straight quality starts, lowering his ERA to 3.18 with a 1.24 WHIP and 133:44 K:BB across 23 starts (130.1 innings) this season. He's currently slated for a road matchup with the Phillies this weekend in his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Grabs first win since April
Gray (5-4) earned the win Thursday, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings against the Cardinals. He struck out eight. Gray was excellent Thursday, tallying his highest strikeout total since May 12 to earn his first win in 15 starts. The veteran right-hander has now delivered three consecutive quality starts after allowing 11 earned runs in his previous two outings (11.2 innings). Overall, Gray has a 3.18 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and 123:44 K:BB across 22 starts (124.1 innings) in an up-and-down campaign. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for next week in Detroit.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Still winless since April
Gray did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on five hits over six innings against the Royals. He struck out five without issuing a walk. Gray held up his end of the bargain, posting his fourth quality start in his last six turns, but once again his teammates let him down. Improbably, Gray has now gone 15 straight starts without a win, with his last coming all the way back on April 30. The right-hander expressed some frustration after his July 17 start, mostly with himself. He has a 3.22 ERA over 117.1 innings this season and his luck has to turn eventually.... See More ... Twins' Sonny Gray: Gets back on track
Gray allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four over six innings in a no-decision versus the White Sox on Saturday. Gray had allowed a combined 11 runs over his last 11.2 innings entering this start, but he was back in solid form against a division rival. The right-hander didn't get enough run support while in the game, causing his winless streak to reach 14 starts. He's now at a 3.15 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 110:44 K:BB through 111.1 innings this season. Gray is projected for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Falters again Monday
Gray dropped to 4-4 after allowing five runs on five hits and four walks while striking out five over 5.2 innings in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Mariners. Gray didn't allow more than three runs in any of his first 17 outings, but he's given up 11 runs across his last 11.2 innings. The right-hander has also gone 13 starts without a win despite fairly solid pitching in that span. The positive news is that he continues to keep the ball down -- he hasn't allowed a homer in any of his last three outings and he's given up just three long balls all season. Gray has a 3.16 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 106:43 K:BB through 105.1 innings over 19 starts this season. He's projected for a home start versus the White Sox this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Allows season-high six runs
Gray (4-3) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks over six innings against the Orioles. He struck out five. Gray got shelled for a season-high six runs in the second inning after allowing three consecutive singles to open the frame, followed by back-to-back walks. He actually went on to retire 10 consecutive batters from the third inning on, but the damage had already been done, and the right-hander took his third loss of the season. Gray has not won a start since April 30 against the Royals and has now issued three walks in each of his last two outings.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Blanks Baltimore in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing just two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings against the Orioles. He struck out seven. Gray was excellent Sunday, holding the Orioles off the board for six innings. However, he'd fail to earn a win when Baltimore rallied for two runs in the eighth to hand Minnesota a 2-1 loss. After starting the year 4-0, Gray has failed to pick up a win in his last 11 starts despite pitching to a respectable 3.55 ERA in that span. Overall, Gray is 4-2 with a 2.50 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 96:36 K:BB through 17 starts (93.2 innings) this season. He's lined up for a rematch with the Orioles at home in his next outing.... See More ... Twins' Sonny Gray: Settles for no-decision
Gray allowed three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five batters over five innings in a no-decision against Boston on Wednesday. Gray gave up a single run in each of the first, third and fifth frames and didn't come out for the sixth. He hasn't pitched into the sixth inning in any of his past three outings, though he's posted a a fine 3.86 ERA over that span. Gray has yet to give up more than three runs in a game through 15 starts this season, but he hasn't picked up a win since April 30. Since that date he's taken eight no-decisions and one loss while recording a 3.91 ERA. The right-hander has slowed down after a phenomenal beginning to the campaign, but he still ranks fourth among qualified pitchers with a 2.56 ERA overall.... See More ... See Less -
Twins' Sonny Gray: Inefficient in no-decision
Gray did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks over four innings against the Tigers. He struck out three. Gray struggled with his command, matching a season high with four walks while needing 79 pitches to get through just three innings. After starting the year with a 1.39 ERA through his first eight starts, Gray's posted a 3.82 mark with a mediocre 1.57 WHIP over his last six outings. Overall, the 33-year-old right-hander is 4-1 with a 2.37 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 79:30 K:BB through 76 innings. Gray currently lines up for a home matchup with the Red Sox in his next outing....
