Player Outlook
The 2023 season was a tale of two halves for Marcus Stroman. The 32-year-old made his second All-Star team on the strength of a first half which saw him collect a 2.96 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 98:41 K:BB over 112.2 innings. In the second half, Stroman missed six weeks with hip and rib injuries and posted an 8.63 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 21:11 K:BB over 24 frames. Undaunted by his poor finish, Stroman opted out of the one year and $21 million remaining on his contract with the Cubs to pursue free agency. Although there have been some curvy roads along the way, Stroman has been rock-solid on the whole over the last three seasons in holding a 3.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 396:132 K:BB across 454.1 innings. He's not going to help you in strikeouts, but Stroman remains an elite groundball guy and usually avoids the barrel. He should be a solid floor play in 2024.

Stroman had gone at least five innings in each of his previous four starts, but the Rangers got to him early Wednesday. This was the sixth start in a row in which Stroman didn't give up a home run, which is progress since he allowed eight long balls across the six starts before that. The 33-year-old picked up his ninth quality start with this 98-pitch performance despite yielding nine hits, matching a season-worst total set July 27 against Boston. However, Stroman only allowed one extra-base hit -- a Paul Goldschmidt double in the second -- as he notched his second walk-free outing of the season. This marks the fifth season in which Stroman has collected double-digit wins in his 10-year career. Stroman was a little off Sunday, throwing 56 of 97 pitches for strikes, but he had ample run support to pick up his second win over his last three outings. He's gone at least five innings in three straight starts after doing so just two times across six appearances between June 28 and Aug. 2. The veteran right-hander is now at a 3.88 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 97:57 K:BB through 132.1 innings over 25 starts this season. His 3.9 BB/9 is by far the worst of his career, and his 6.6 K/9 is his lowest mark in a full campaign, which at least partially explains his inconsistency this year.     Stroman did not factor into the decision in Sunday's loss to the Tigers, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing four hits and two walks. He struck out five. Stroman had one of his best outings in recent memory Sunday. It was his first time reaching six innings since June 22 and his fourth time this season shutting the opponent out and reaching six innings. He exited the game with a narrow 1-0 lead that eventually slipped away in the ninth. Stroman has now allowed just one run over his last two starts after allowing 10 combined in his two starts prior. His strikeout averages this year are one of the lowest of his career and his walks are up, but he's trending towards a fifth straight season with an ERA below 4.00. For the year, Stroman owns a 3.82 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 92:54 K:BB in 127.1 innings. He lines up to face the Rockies at home over the weekend his next time out.
