  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Five strikeouts in final turn

DeGrom came away with a no-decision in Friday's 5-2 win over the Angels, allowing one run on four hits over four innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. The 36-year-old right-hander was sharp in his final start of 2024, topping out at 98.7 mph with his fastball and firing 39 of 53 pitches for strikes. A cautious recovery from Tommy John surgery cost deGrom most of the season, but in three September outings he delivered a 1.69 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 14:1 K:BB over 10.2 innings, suggesting he still has plenty left in the tank. He still has three years and $115 million left on his contract, plus a $20 million club option for 2028, so if he's healthy deGrom should play a big role in the Rangers' rotation plans for next season.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Fans five over three frames

DeGrom did not factor into the decision in Friday's 8-2 loss against Seattle, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over three innings. He struck out five. The two-time Cy Young winner fired 58 pitches as he continues to build up after missing most of the year while recovering from Tommy John surgery. DeGrom looked terrific once again, as he averaged 97.6 mph on his fastball and generated nine whiffs in total. The only blemish on his evening came via a Josh Rojas solo shot in the third inning, the first run deGrom has allowed over 6.2 total innings this season. The Texas right-hander is currently scheduled to make his last start, which should once again have a workload restriction, on the road against the Angels next week.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Delivers scoreless line in return

DeGrom (elbow) allowed four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 3.2 scoreless innings Friday while taking a no-decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners. In his first big-league outing since April 28, 2023 and after completing four minor-league rehab starts prior to being activated from the 60-day injured list, deGrom was limited to 61 pitches (41 strikes) in his return to the Texas rotation. Though he was generally sharp during his time on the mound, deGrom is likely to remain on a workload restriction for his next start, which is expected to come next week at home versus the Blue Jays.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Activated off IL ahead of start

The Rangers activated deGrom (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday. DeGrom will make his 2024 debut Friday against the Mariners after completing his recovery from Tommy John surgery in June of 2023. He only gave up one earned run and stuck out 15 batters across four rehab outings, and he'll rejoin the Rangers' rotation for the tail end of the regular season. Right-hander Owen White was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock in a corresponding move.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Returning Friday

DeGrom (elbow) will start Friday's game against the Mariners, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom has been on the injured list all season while working his way back from a Tommy John procedure he underwent last June. Now that he's made four rehab appearances in the minors, during which he allowed just one earned run across 10.2 innings while striking out 15 batters, he's been given the green light to make his season debut and help out the Rangers' rotation for the final several weeks of the season. Although the four-time All-Star hasn't pitched since April 2023, his minor-league performance and favorable matchup against a weak Mariners offense suggest that he'll pick up right where he left off during his first start back in the majors.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Looks ready to return from IL

DeGrom (elbow) allowed one hit and struck out five over four scoreless innings in a rehab start for Double-A Frisco on Saturday. DeGrom made his fourth rehab start, and the four innings were the most he's thrown. The right-hander, who was scheduled to throw 60 pitches, was too efficient, dispatching the opposition on just 49 throws. The Rangers plan to have deGrom return from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut in the majors at some point during Texas' road trip to Arizona and Seattle that begins Tuesday and runs through next Sunday.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Rehab outing confirmed

DeGrom (elbow) will make his next start at Double-A Frisco on Saturday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. The Rangers had floated the idea of having deGrom pitch with the big-league club Saturday, but it has now been confirmed that he'll make one more rehab outing. He has yet to complete more than 2.2 innings with Frisco, so the team will likely look to stretch him out a bit more in his final start before activation.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: One more rehab start likely

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that deGrom (elbow) is likely to make one more rehab start, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. While Bochy confirmed the team has weighed the option of having deGrom start for the Rangers instead of Double-A Frisco on Saturday, he added that "I don't think that's what we're going to do." DeGrom would be slated to go four innings with Frisco on Saturday, setting him up for his season debut with the Rangers the following weekend in Seattle.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Could make season debut Saturday

DeGrom (elbow) could make his season debut Saturday against the Angels, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. DeGrom had been scheduled for one more rehab start with Double-A Frisco, but now the Rangers are considering having him start for them that day instead. If his outing is at Frisco, he will go four innings. If it's with the major-league club, he would be scheduled for just three frames. DeGrom has been excellent in his first three rehab starts, allowing one run on just three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 6.2 innings. The 36-year-old is coming back from a second Tommy John surgery.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Makes third rehab start

DeGrom allowed one and one walk while striking out five over 2.2 scoreless innings for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday. DeGrom made the third start on his rehab assignment and is expected to make at least one more Saturday at Double-A Frisco. The right-hander has allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out 10 over 6.2 innings during his rehab stint. Conceivably, deGrom could rejoin the Rangers' rotation at some point during next week's road trip that runs through Arizona and Seattle from Sept. 10-15.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Requires two more starts

DeGrom (elbow) will require two more rehab starts, with the first coming at Triple-A Round Rock, Jeff Wilson of AllDLLS.com reports. DeGrom has already completed a pair of rehab outings, allowing one run across four innings, and he'll need two more appearances before possibly being activated. The 35-year-old hasn't pitched for the Rangers since he underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2023 but should be back in mid-September.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Will increase workload

DeGrom (elbow) will increase his workload to three innings and 50 pitches in his third rehab start, MLB.com reports. DeGrom made a second rehab start Tuesday, throwing two perfect innings and striking out two batters while throwing 24 pitches (16 strikes). The Rangers allotted for him to throw 40 pitches, but deGrom was too efficient and finished his work in the bullpen. Texas manager Bruce Bochy did not indicate the schedule for the third rehab start, but it could come as early as this weekend.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Next rehab start set

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday that deGrom (elbow) will make his next rehab start with Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. The right-hander threw 29 pitches over two innings during his first rehab outing Thursday with Double-A Frisco, and he'll continue building up his workload at Triple-A. DeGrom will likely need a couple more starts beyond Tuesday's outing before making his season debut with the Rangers as he nears the finish line of his recovery from June 2023 Tommy John surgery.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throws 29 pitches in rehab outing

DeGrom (elbow) allowed one earned run on two hits and no walks while striking out three across two innings in a rehab outing with Double-A Frisco on Thursday. DeGrom threw 29 total pitches, 21 of which went for strikes. He also regularly hit 99 miles per hour with his fastball and touched 100 at least once. The right-hander will need a few more rehab outings before being activated from the 60-day injured list, but Thursday's start was an encouraging performance in his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: In line for mid-September return

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that deGrom (elbow) will likely need four rehab starts in the minors before likely being activated from the 60-day injured list around mid-September, MLB.com reports. DeGrom will begin his rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Thursday, when he's expected to toss around 30 pitches over two innings. Bochy noted that deGrom will gradually increase his pitch count over his subsequent rehab outings, and if he sticks to a four-day rest schedule between starts in the minors, the right-hander could be available to make his 2024 Rangers debut as soon as Sept. 11. Entering play Tuesday, the Rangers sit 11 games behind the Astros for the AL West lead and 12.5 games behind the pace for a wild-card spot, and while a postseason berth appears unlikely, the organization would still like to see deGrom pitch in the big leagues before the end of the season to gain a better understanding of what type of workload he'll be able to handle in 2025. After signing with the Rangers in December 2022, deGrom made just six starts in his first season with Texas before undergoing his second career Tommy John surgery last June.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Rehab assignment coming soon

DeGrom (elbow) threw another live batting practice session Saturday and hopes to begin a rehab assignment late next week, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports. He threw his first 20-pitch live BP session Aug. 7 and it sounds like Saturday's session could be his last before he goes to a minor-league affiliate. It's unclear how many rehab starts deGrom will need before being activated, but he remains a top late-season stash in fantasy leagues.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Throwing live BP on Thursday

DeGrom (elbow) with throw a 20-pitch live batting practice session Thursday at Globe Life Field, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. It will be deGrom's first time facing hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery in June of 2023. Assuming it goes well, the right-hander will then progress to a two-inning live batting practice session early next week, which could be the final box he needs to check before being cleared to begin a rehab assignment. DeGrom will need multiple rehab starts before rejoining the Rangers' rotation.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Set to face hitters

DeGrom (elbow) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session Saturday, Dave Sessions of MLB.com reports. DeGrom, who threw all of his pitches, simulated three innings in the bullpen and is ready to face hitters for his next outing. "Having a batter step in, the intensity will change a little bit, and that's where you really find out where you're at," deGrom said. The right-hander said he "felt good" but believes he still needs work on location.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Completes bullpen session

DeGrom (elbow) threw a 45-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, MLB.com reports. DeGrom threw three sets of 15 pitches and came away from the session feeling good. The right-hander reiterated once again the goal is to pitch this year and hopefully get the Rangers into the postseason. Texas general manager Chris Young admitted that return timelines are fluid, but the organization's goal is to have deGrom pitching for the Rangers at some point in August.

  • Rangers' Jacob deGrom: Session on tap for 45 pitches

DeGrom (elbow) will throw a 45-pitch bullpen session Tuesday, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. DeGrom is expected to throw two total bullpen sessions on this road trip before facing hitters. He threw between 40 and 45 pitches in a bullpen session a week ago, so deGrom's workload hasn't been increasing, although his intensity in each session could be progressing. Once he throws his final bullpen session this week, we could get an update on when and where he will face hitters.
