  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Not locked in for Game 4 yet

Updating a previous item, Gray is not yet locked in to start Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday in Arizona, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported earlier Monday that it would be Gray taking the ball for the Rangers in Game 4. While the right-hander appears to be the most likely candidate to start Tuesday, manager Bruce Bochy noted that he would not be holding Gray or anyone else back from pitching in Game 3, if needed. Bochy should officially announce a Game 4 starter after the conclusion of Game 3.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Gets nod for Game 4 start

Gray will start Tuesday in Game 4 of the World Series in Arizona, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. Gray hasn't started a game since Sept. 25, as he ended the regular season on the injured list with a forearm issue and has been used in relief in his two postseason appearances. The 31-year-old looked very sharp out of the bullpen in Game 1, striking out four over 1.2 scoreless innings. He threw 26 pitches in that appearance and will be going on three days' rest Tuesday, so Gray will not be ready for a full workload. The Diamondbacks are going with a bullpen game Tuesday.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Makes ALCS roster

Gray (forearm) is on the Rangers' roster for the American League Championship Series against the Astros, which begins Sunday in Houston, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. The right-hander landed on the 15-day injured list with lower forearm tightness after his Sept. 25 start against the Angels, and he'll join the playoff roster after the Rangers advanced through the wild-card series and the ALDS. Max Scherzer (shoulder) also made the roster, potentially lining up Gray to start Game 4 on Thursday since Jordan Montgomery and Nathan Eovaldi are pitching the first two games of the series.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: On track for ALCS

Gray (forearm) is on track to rejoin the rotation if the Rangers advance to the ALCS, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Gray landed on the 15-day injured list just before the end of the regular season due to tightness in his lower right forearm, but he has apparently been trending well with his side work. Max Scherzer (shoulder) could also potentially become an option for Texas in the best-of-seven ALCS, rounding out a four-starter mix that already includes Jordan Montgomery and Nathan Eovaldi. If at least Gray is able to return, Andrew Heaney and Dane Dunning would most likely operate in bulk relief.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Lands on 15-day IL

The Rangers placed Gray on the 15-day injured list Friday, retroactive to Sept. 28, with right lower forearm tightness. Gray made an early exit from his last start Monday against the Angels due to right wrist/forearm tightness and can now be ruled out for the remainder of the regular season. He could potentially return in the postseason if the Rangers are able to stage a deep run. The 31-year-old right-hander finishes with a 9-8 record, 4.12 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 142:54 K:BB in 29 starts covering 157.1 innings.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Undergoes imaging

Gray (wrist) underwent imaging Tuesday and is awaiting the results, MLB.com reports. Gray was removed from Monday's game ahead of the bottom of the seventh inning. He came out to warm up but quickly left with trainers. The Rangers have described the decision to remove the right-hander as precautionary.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Pulled with injury

Gray (9-8) was removed from Monday's start against the Angels due to right wrist tightness, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports. He allowed one run on five hits while striking out seven over six innings before leaving the game. Gray went out to the mound to work the bottom of the seventh inning, but he didn't feel quite right during his warmups and ultimately left the field with training staff. He'll be considered day-to-day until the team evaluates him further.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Another short outing

Gray did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk over 2.1 innings against the Red Sox. He struck out one. Gray found himself in an early 3-0 hole after surrendering a first-inning homer to Adam Duvall before Bobby Dalbec tacked on a fourth run with a solo blast in the second. While the Rangers would rally to win thanks to a 15-run outburst, it was another disappointing outing for Gray, who's failed to make it through four innings in any of his last three starts, allowing eight runs in that span (8.2 innings). Overall, the 31-year-old Gray is 8-8 with a 4.22 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 135:54 K:BB through 28 starts (151.1 innings) this season. He'll look to get on track in his next outing, currently scheduled for early next week against the Angels.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Lackluster in defeat

Gray (8-8) took the loss Friday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over 3.2 innings against the Guardians. He struck out three. While it was not his best effort, Gray's loss also owes something to Andrew Heaney, who got charged with six runs over two innings after relieving the right-hander, and the Rangers offense, which was stymied until the ninth. Gray has allowed at least three earned runs in his last five starts and seven of his last nine for an ERA of 5.72 over that stretch. With the Rangers in a dog fight to win the AL West or at least secure a wild-card spot, Gray will look to right the ship in his next start, tentatively scheduled to take place mid-week at home against Boston.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Short start Sunday

Gray allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out three over 2.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Athletics on Sunday. Gray got into trouble in the third inning, and Andrew Heaney was brought in to finish off the frame. This was the third time this season Gray has failed to complete three innings, though he's escaped with a no-decision in each of those outings. The right-hander has allowed 16 runs (15 earned) across 23.2 innings during his five-start winless streak. He's now at a 3.96 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 131:51 K:BB through 145.1 innings over 26 starts this year. Gray is tentatively projected to make his next start on the road in Cleveland.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Strikes out nine in no-decision

Gray did not factor into the decision Monday, allowing three runs on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Mets. He struck out nine. It was a strong bounce-back performance from Gray after he surrendered five runs in a loss to Arizona in his last outing. His nine strikeouts were the most he's had in a game since June 7. Overall, Gray has an 8-7 record with a 3.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 120:45 K:BB across 24 starts (137.2 innings) this season. He's currently lined up for a home matchup with the Twins this weekend in his next start.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Struggles in short start

Gray (8-7) allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out five over four innings to take the loss Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks. Gray needed 83 pitches (52 strikes) to get through four frames in the poor outing. He'd allowed just one run over his last two starts combined, but he'd given up 11 runs across 10.1 innings in the two outings before that. Overall, Gray has a 3.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 111:44 K:BB through 131.2 innings across 23 starts this year. He's lacked consistency over the last couple of months, but he'll aim to get back on track on the road versus the Mets next week.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Escapes with seventh win

Gray (7-5) picked up the win in Saturday's 9-8 victory over the Marlins, surrendering five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings. He struck out six. A Marcus Semien error in the fourth inning helped mitigate the damage to Gray's ERA, but it was still another shaky performance from the right-hander -- he's failed to complete six innings in three straight starts, and he's been tagged for four runs or more in five of his last six. Despite the summer swoon, he'll take a 3.72 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 95:39 K:BB through 113.2 innings into his next outing, which is likely to come next weekend in San Francisco.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Starting Saturday

Gray will start Saturday against the Marlins. This will be Gray's first time pitching since July 24, a span of 11 days in between outings. Since he last pitched, the Rangers acquired two new starters at the trade deadline, which altered the rotation pattern and may have resulted in the long layoff. Gray had a leg injury entering the previous start, so perhaps that was involved in the decision to give him so much time off. Gray has not won a game since June 2 and sports a 5.36 ERA over the eight starts since.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Struggles against 'Stros

Gray allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out six batters in a no-decision against Houston on Monday. The positive news is that Gray was able to make his scheduled start after being struck on the leg by a comebacker in his previous outing Wednesday. However, the right-hander couldn't contain the Astros' offense, tying a season-worst mark by allowing six runs. To Gray's credit, he managed to stick around for five frames after allowing the first five batters he faced to reach base and giving up four runs in the first inning. The veteran hurler's ERA rose to 3.66 as a result of the rough outing, continuing a troubling trend after it sat at an impressive 2.32 through June 7.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Expects to make next start

Gray said Wednesday that he expects to make his next scheduled start after X-rays on his bruised left shin came back negative, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Gray was struck on the leg by a comebacker off the bat of the Rays' Yandy Diaz in the fifth inning of Wednesday's game and had to be removed. He's managed to escape with merely a contusion, though, and doesn't expect taking the ball early next week in Houston to be a problem.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: X-rays negative on shin

X-rays turned up clean on Gray's left leg following his early exit from Wednesday's game against the Rays, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports. Gray was lifted from his afternoon start versus Tampa Bay when he got struck by a Yandy Diaz comebacker in the top of the fifth inning, but he escaped with only a bruised left shin. It sounds like the 31-year-old right-hander will be able to stay on turn and take the ball again for the Rangers early next week in Houston. He scattered eight hits and one walk over 4.1 scoreless frames Wednesday while striking out four. Texas led 1-0 at the time of his departure.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Coughs up four runs

Gray allowed four runs on five hits and three walks over six innings in Friday's win over Cleveland. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. All the damage against Gray came in the third frame when he served up a pair of two-run homers. He's yielded 19 runs over his last five starts, driving his ERA from 2.32 to 3.45 in the process. Since his 12-strikeout, zero-walk performance June 7, Gray has posted a lackluster 16:13 K:BB over his last five starts. His next outing is lined up to come at home against the Rays next week.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Guts out quality start

Gray (6-5) took the loss Wednesday, giving up four runs (three earned) on nine hits and three walks over six innings as the Rangers were downed 4-2 by the Red Sox. He struck out two. It was far from the best outing of the season for Gray, who threw 58 of 94 pitches for a strike, but he still came away with his eighth quality start. The right-hander has lost four straight decisions, however, and since tossing a complete game against the Cardinals on June 7, he's posted a 6.98 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and 12:10 K:BB in 19.1 innings. Gray will get an extended rest thanks to the All-Star break, one which he likely needs as the 31-year-old is on pace to work more than 170 innings for the first time since 2018.

  • Rangers' Jon Gray: Tagged with five runs

Gray (6-4) allowed five runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings Friday, striking out four and taking a loss against Houston. Gray gave up one run through four frames before the Astros plated four total runs in the fifth and sixth innings. After a stretch of six straight outings allowing fewer than two runs, he's been charged with 12 runs over 13.1 frames in his last three appearances. The 31-year-old righty still owns a solid 3.21 ERA with a 73:27 K:BB through 15 starts. Gray is currently lined up to start in Boston next week.
