  • Rangers' Cody Thomas: Latches on with Texas

Thomas signed a minor-league contract with the Rangers on Monday.

Thomas spent the 2024 campaign overseas playing in the Japan Western League for the Orix Buffaloes, batting .242 with two home runs, 19 RBI and 18 runs scored in 89 games. He made it to the big leagues with the A's in 2022 and 2023 but appeared in only 29 games over this stretch. Thomas will have a chance to compete against big-league arms during spring training but will presumably open 2025 at Triple-A.

  • Athletics' Cody Thomas: Outrighted to Triple-A

Oakland outrighted Thomas to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.

Spenser Watkins and Conner Capel have also been pushed off the 40-man roster as the Athletics prepare to make some September call-ups. Thomas, 28, is a career .250/.308/.333 hitter in 78 plate appearances at the major-league level.

  • Athletics' Cody Thomas: Returns to minors

Thomas was optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.

Thomas spent more than a month with the big club and held his own when out there, but he started only four games for the A's after the calendar flipped to August, so he will head back to the minors and presumably see action more regularly.

  • Athletics' Cody Thomas: Keeps up solid hitting Tuesday

Thomas went 1-for-3 with a double in a loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday, pushing his average to .304 over the last eight games.

Thomas drew his first start since July 25 and posted his fourth career extra-base hit. The 28-year-old, whose professional career dates back to 2016, has been serviceable against big-league arms after finally ascending to the majors for the first time last season. Factoring in Tuesday's two-bagger, he's sporting a .270 average and .324 on-base percentage across 68 MLB plate appearances, although those solid numbers are accompanied by a 33.8 percent strikeout rate and anemic .365 slugging percentage.
