Top Raisel Iglesias News

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Notches 11th save

Iglesias earned a save against the Cardinals on Saturday, striking out one batter over one perfect inning.

Iglesias was tasked with preserving a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning, and he did so with ease, retiring all three batters he faced on 11 pitches. After a rough first two-plus months of the campaign -- Iglesias held a 6.75 ERA as recently as June 5 -- the veteran reliever has rebounded with 14 straight scoreless outings, during which he's posted a 17:1 K:BB across 12.2 frames. At one point it seemed Atlanta could be moving on from Iglesias at closer, but the right-hander has a save each of the past two days and appears to be back in control of the ninth-inning role.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Scoreless streak continues in save

Iglesias secured the save in Friday's 6-5 win over the Cardinals, allowing no baserunners in the ninth inning. He struck out one.

It's worth noting Dylan Lee may not have been available after working the past two days and taking a blown save in Thursday's loss to the Athletics. That said, Iglesias is certainly turning a corner and pushing to secure the closer role after posting a 6.75 ERA as of June 5. The veteran right-hander hasn't surrendered a run over his last 11.2 innings, during which he owns a 0.60 WHIP and 16:1 K:BB.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Turns in ninth save Tuesday

Iglesias secured the save in Tuesday's 7-4 win over the Mets, allowing one hit and recording the final two outs. He struck out one.

Enyel De Los Santos was unable to slam the door on the Mets, which prompted manager Brian Snitker to turn to Iglesias for his ninth save of the season. It was Iglesias' first save opportunity since he gave up three runs during his June 5 outing, and Tuesday was his first converted save since May 16. Pierce Johnson worked the sixth inning Tuesday, while Dylan Lee may not have been available after throwing 1.1 innings for a save Monday, but it was still an encouraging outing by Iglesias as he tries to reclaim the closer role -- he's posted six straight scoreless appearances with a 5:0 K:BB.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Secures win

Iglesias (4-5) struck out one batter in a scoreless inning and earned a win against the Mets on Tuesday.

Iglesias delivered a perfect 10th inning and earned a win after Atlanta walked it off in the bottom of the frame. He's turned in three scoreless innings since his last blown save June 5. He still owns a 6.00 ERA through 27 frames this season. Pierce Johnson and Dylan Lee each threw scoreless innings in Tuesday's win.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Notches first hold of season

Iglesias gave up a hit and struck out one in a scoreless eighth inning Friday to record his first hold of the season in a win over the Rockies.

The right-hander was brought in to protect a 7-4 lead and got the job done on 12 pitches (eight strikes). Iglesias hasn't collected a save since May 16, and while Atlanta manager Brian Snitker indicated over the weekend that he was no longer the team's primary closing option, he didn't say the veteran reliever would be completely removed from the late-inning mix. If Iglesias can string together a few more sharp appearances, he could reclaim the job. Dylan Lee was in line for the save opportunity Friday before Atlanta erupted for five insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Clean inning in lower-leverage spot

Iglesias struck out two in a perfect eighth inning during Monday's 7-1 win over the Brewers.

The right-hander entered the game to protect a four-run lead, with Atlanta adding on some insurance in the top of the ninth. Iglesias has a 7.07 ERA since the beginning of May and hasn't successfully converted a save since May 16, but with no one else in the bullpen having yet taken advantage of the opportunity to lay claim to the closer role, he may only need a few sharp appearances in a row to re-establish himself as the top option for manager Brian Snitker.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Passed over for save chance

Iglesias did not pitch Saturday despite Atlanta holding a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning against the Giants.

Iglesias has struggled over the last month, allowing 11 earned runs across 10 innings pitched. After blowing a save and taking a loss Thursday, manager Brian Snitker noted that Iglesias was not necessarily Atlanta's primary closer moving forward, per Mark Bowman of MLB.com. He was unavailable to pitch Friday but was then passed over in a save chance Saturday. Pierce Johnson got the save opportunity instead, but he blew the chance by allowing a two-run home run to Matt Chapman.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Blows save, takes loss Thursday

Iglesias (3-5) blew the save and took the loss against the Diamondbacks on Thursday, allowing three runs on four hits and one walk in two-thirds of an inning. He did not record a strikeout.

Iglesias entered with a 10-7 lead and a runner on first with one out but was unable to close things out, departing with an 11-10 deficit. He's now allowed runs in seven of his past 10 appearances and holds a disappointing 6.75 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, and 25:6 K:BB across 24 innings overall. While there's been no indication from the team that the 35-year-old is in danger of losing the closer role, he's just 8-for-12 in save chances as Atlanta continues to slide in the National League East standings.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Struggles continue Wednesday

Iglesias gave up a run on two hits and a walk in the ninth inning of Wednesday's loss to the Diamondbacks. He struck out one.

The Atlanta closer was brought in for the top of the ninth with his team down 1-0, but Iglesias couldn't prevent an insurance run from crossing the plate -- something which loomed large when Atlanta scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the frame. Iglesias has been tagged for at least one run in seven of his last 10 appearances, posting a ghastly 7.71 ERA, 2.04 WHIP and 8:3 K:BB in 9.1 innings over that stretch while converting two of three save chances. As yet, there's been no indication manager Brian Snitker is considering removing Iglesias from the closer role, but his strikeout rate on the season has swooned to a career-low 24.8 percent, and there's little sign of a turnaround in his recent performances.

  • Braves' Raisel Iglesias: Takes loss against San Diego

Iglesias (3-4) was tagged with the loss against the Padres on Friday after allowing a solo homer in the ninth inning while striking out one batter. He did not issue a walk.

Iglesias was tasked with keeping the game tied at 1-1, but that mission was short-lived after he yielded a solo home run to Manny Machado. It's been a shaky season for Iglesias, who has allowed at least one earned run in five of his last seven outings and has a 5.75 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 21:4 K:BB across 20.1 innings. Iglesias' recent poor play could force manager Brian Snitker to turn to someone else for closing duties. Pierce Johnson and Dylan Lee are current options out of the bullpen, or Snitker could consider veteran Craig Kimbrel, who is with Triple-A Gwinnett after signing a minor-league deal with Atlanta in March.
