Angels' Taylor Ward: Undergoes surgery
Ward underwent facial surgery Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
Ward fractured several bones in his face when taking a pitch to the head in late July, and he underwent procedures on both his left orbital bone and nose Friday. It's unclear exactly how long Ward will need to recover, but he is not eligible to be activated from the injured list until late September, so he will not be back on the field anytime soon.... Ward was hit in the head by a pitch Saturday against the Blue Jays and was diagnosed with multiple facial fractures. After landing on the 10-day injured list Sunday, he'll shift to the 60-day IL later in the day to make room on the 40-man roster for new acquisitions C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk. The Angels placed Ward on the 10-day injured list Sunday after he was diagnosed with multiple facial fractures.
According to Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com, Ward has been released from the hospital after he was struck in the side of the face by a pitch in the fifth inning of Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Blue Jays. Manager Phil Nevin is expected to provide an update on Ward's condition later Wednesday, but based on the initial diagnosis, the 29-year-old can be expected to miss well beyond the minimum 10 days. Ward exited Saturday's game against the Blue Jays after getting hit by a pitch in the head, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
He was sitting up in the cart as he got a standing ovation from the crowd and had a visibly swollen left eye after getting hit by a pitch thrown by Alek Manoah.
