By now, there's no disputing that Tanner Scott is the Marlins closer. He's gotten each of the team's past five saves, including two over the weekend. What's strange is how little attention it's gotten him in CBS Sports leagues. His 2.24 ERA and 12.1 K/9 would both rank seventh among relievers with at least 20 saves. He has the makings of a stud closer, in other words, and the stuff (a 98 mph fastball and wipeout slider) has always been there. It's true he flopped as a closer last year, but mostly because he couldn't find the strike zone. He's cut that walk rate in half this year. The Marlins are still very much in the playoff race and figure to play in some close games down the stretch, so Scott may well produce like a stud closer, too.

Reports earlier in the day Sunday surfaced that trade deadline acquisition David Robertson was being removed from the closer role, leaving Scott as the likely candidate to take over as the team's new closer. Despite pitching Saturday as well, Scott's name was called to handle things in the ninth. He allowed two singles but got Jacob Young to ground into a double play to end the game. There were reports earlier in the day that the Marlins were looking to make a change from David Robertson, who's only 4 for 7 on save chances since coming over from the Mets. "I think you'll probably see Tanner there in the ninth inning [a lot]," manager Skip Schumaker said after Scott closed out Sunday's game. The left-hander certainly has the stuff for the role, having registered 12.5 K/9 with a killer slider and a fastball that peaks at 100 mph. The Marlins tried him out as their closer last year, but he was simply too erratic. He's cut his walk rate almost in half this year, offering hope he'll make good on his potential this time.

Puk a vote of confidence over the weekend, but then the left-hander blew another save Sunday, raising his ERA to 4.45. It was at 2.88 to begin July. Meanwhile, fellow left-hander Tanner Scott, who has some closer experience himself, is plugging away in setup duty. In 30 appearances dating back to mid-May, he has a 1.47 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 14.4 K/9. A change is hardly a foregone conclusion, but it wouldn't be surprising given Scott's success and Puk's struggles. In leagues where saves are scarce, you'll want to stash Scott away before his cost skyrockets.

Scott had a productive series against the Cubs, recording a win and a save over two scoreless innings. His ERA still sits at a subpar 5.25 with a 1.17 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB through 12 innings. The 28-year-old lefty was expected to share closing duties with A.J. Puk and Dylan Floro coming into the season, but he's fallen to a distant third on the depth chart. There's little reason to roster Scott at this point, outside of deeper holds leagues.
