White Sox's Sebastian Rivero: Joins minor-league camp
Rivero was reassigned to minor-league camp by the White Sox on Monday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Rivero will head to the minors with Yasmani Grandal and Seby Zavala set to open the 2023 campaign as the club's two top options behind the dish. Rivero saw his first big-league action a year ago with the Royals, slashing .154/.214/.154 with an RBI and two runs scored in 17 games.

White Sox's Sebastian Rivero: Catches on with White Sox
Rivero signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Rivero, 24, follows new White Sox manager Pedro Grifol from the Royals. He's a glove-first catcher who has managed just a .433 OPS during his brief time in the big leagues.

Rivero was recalled from Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Tuesday.
With Vinnie Pasquantino (shoulder) landing on the injured list, it would seem that one of the Royals' top two catchers will be starting at designated hitter pretty regularly, so Rivero gives the team a true backup catcher for emergencies. Rivero hit .218/.294/.410 with five home runs in 42 games this year at Double-A.

Rivero was sent down in mid-July and hit .174 with a double, two runs, an RBI and four strikeouts over six Double-A games following his demotion. He'll rejoin the active roster as depth behind the plate after Cam Gallagher was traded to the Padres on Tuesday.

The Royals optioned Rivero to Double-A Northwest Arkansas following Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Blue Jays.
Kansas City needed to open up space on the 26-man active roster with 10 players set to return from the restricted list in advance of the team's first game out of the All-Star break next weekend, so Rivero was a logical candidate to return to the minors. After his call-up Thursday when a wave of players were deactivated for the series in Toronto due to their vaccination statuses, Rivero started twice and appeared off the bench in the other two contests of the four-game slate, going 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.

Rivero started the first two games of the Royals' series in Toronto, going 0-for-4 at the dish between those contests. The Royals recalled Rivero from Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Thursday. He'll start at catcher and bat ninth in the team's series opener in Toronto.
Rivero and fellow catcher Freddy Fermin were summoned from the minors ahead of the four-game series in Toronto since the Royals will be without backstops MJ Melendez and Cam Gallagher, who were both placed on the restricted list due to their vaccination statuses and aren't eligible to cross the Canadian border. Though Fermin had been playing with the Royals' top affiliate in Omaha, it'll be Rivero who catches for starting pitcher Angel Zerpa in the series opener.

He'll head back to Northwest Arkansas after Perez was activated Saturday.

Rivero was optioned back to Omaha after serving as the 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader, but he'll be back one day later in advance of the Royals' series finale with the Orioles after Edward Olivares (quadriceps) was moved to the 10-day injured list. The addition of Rivero will give the Royals an extra body behind the plate while No. 2 catcher MJ Melendez likely picks up more work as a designated hitter with Olivares out of the mix for at least the next week and a half.
