Player Outlook
Luis Matos spent 2024 on the Sacramento shuttle, bouncing between the majors and Triple-A six times, ending the year on the farm. While with the Giants, Matos was a regular for a couple of stretches, but he also fell into a platoon. He fanned at a tidy 15.4 percent rate, but his quality of contact was weak, though his hard-hit rate and barrel rate were better than in his rookie season. Even so, Matos was less productive last year, as his .221 BABIP was 64 points shy of his 2023 level. Part of the BABIP decline was him hitting more fly-balls without the power to clear the fence. Entering his 23-year-old season, Matos isn't a finished product, but until he adds some exit velocity, he'll be at the whims of batted-ball fate. His defense isn't strong enough to keep his bat in the lineup, and with Jung Hoo Lee back, Matos is looking at a reserve role, and likely a few more bus rides to and from Sacramento.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Remains on track for platoon role

Matos is expected to make the Opening Day roster and form a platoon with Mike Yastrzemski in right field, Maria Guardado of MLB.com reports. Matos has been impressive during Cactus League play, hitting .358 with two home runs, 11 RBI and two steals across 53 at-bats. The 23-year-old recorded a .213/.237/.347 slash line over 45 regular-season games in the 2024 campaign, and he struggled to stay settled at the plate, finishing with a 40.1 percent chase rate. However, Matos could be in line for an increased role in 2025 after bouncing between the big leagues and Triple-A Sacramento last season. "He is getting better pitches to hit, and that's always going to be, for him, the most important thing," manager Bob Melvin said. "Not chasing too much. ...We've seen him get a little bit deeper in counts. I think that is a progression for him."

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Could win platoon role

Matos is the front-runner for the fourth outfielder role and is likely to platoon with Mike Yastrzemski, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Matos is hitting .308 (8-for-26) with a home run in ten games this spring. Matos would be in the weak side of the platoon and face lefties. He hit 14 home runs with a .779 OPS at Triple-A last season, but he struggled with a .584 OPS in 45 games in the majors. At age 23, he may finally be finding his footing against big-league pitching this spring, though there's no guarantee that carries over to the regular season.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Back in majors

Matos was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. Matos is not in Sunday's lineup, but he'll replace Mark Canha (thumb sprain) as a righty-hitting bench option. Matos is just 22 years old, but he was below league average at Triple-A (91 wRC+) and the majors (62 wRC+) this season.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Optioned to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Matos to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. Matos has gone 2-for-10 with a home run and two runs scored across four games since rejoining the Giants on Sept. 3. Rather than keeping six outfielders on their big-league roster, San Francisco will now send him back to Triple-A in favor of infielder Donovan Walton, who was recalled from Sacramento in a corresponding move.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Goes deep Sunday

Matos went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Padres. Matos was the latter part of back-to-back home runs against Joe Musgrove in the fifth and picked up his first hit in 10 plate appearances since being called back up Sept. 3. He's struck out multiple times in all three appearances he's made since his return to the majors and won't have a shot at a bigger role unless injuries in front of him arise. For the year, Matos is slashing .211/.235/.340 with five homers, 25 RBI, 13 runs and a 5:24 BB:K in 153 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Rejoins big club

The Giants recalled Matos from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday. The 22-year-old was optioned to Sacramento in late July but is back with the Giants for the final month of the season. Matos has played in 40 games across his two previous stints in the majors this season and has a .217/.238/.333 slash line with four homers in 143 plate appearances. The right-handed bat of Matos could work as a short-side platoon partner of Grant McCray in center field.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Optioned to Sacramento

The Giants optioned Matos to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. Matos will end up as the odd man out of the Giants' outfield after the team claimed Derek Hill off waivers from Texas on Tuesday. Matos slashed .208/.222/.340 with four RBI in 54 plate appearances after his promotion from Triple-A on June 22, and he will be a likely candidate to return to San Francisco should the team's outfield depth be tested later in the season.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Moves into short-side platoon role

Matos is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Guardians. Matos has now taken a seat for four straight matchups against right-handed starting pitchers. He appears to have moved back into a strict short-side platoon role in the Giants outfield following Mike Yastrzemski's return from the injured list Tuesday.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Back in lineup Saturday

Matos is starting in right field and batting fifth in Saturday's game against the Guardians. Matos was scratched from Friday's lineup due to the return of Mike Yastrzemski (elbow), but the former will return after just one game. Since being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on June 22, Matos has gone 10-for-39 with two home runs and four RBI in 13 games. He'll face off against Cleveland southpaw Logan Allen on Saturday.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Lifts fourth homer

Matos went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 5-3 win over the Dodgers. Matos has been back on the Giants' roster for a week, going 8-for-20 (.400) with two homers and three RBI in that span. He started hot after a call-up in mid-May as well before tailing off at the end of the month, so it'll be important to see him sustain his good hitting. Through 110 plate appearances, the outfielder is slashing .257/.282/.400 with four homers, 23 RBI, 11 runs scored and no stolen bases.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Getting regular playing time

Matos will start in right field and bat sixth Thursday against the Cubs, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Matos is being included in the lineup for the fifth time in six games, and he looks like he'll hang on to a regular role in the corner outfield while Mike Yastrzemski (oblique) is on the injured list. Since getting called up from Triple-A Sacramento last weekend, Matos has gone 6-for-14 with a solo home run.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Summoned from Sacramento

The Giants recalled Matos from Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. With Mike Yastrzemski (oblique) landing on the injured list in a corresponding move, Matos will return to San Francisco and could serve as Yastrzemski's main replacement in the starting outfield. The 22-year-old has slashed just .224/.247/.329 with 20 RBI across 89 plate appearances during his time in the big leagues this season.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Five RBI in win

Matos went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI in Friday's 10-5 win over the Rockies. Matos enjoyed one of the best games of his career, driving in at least one run with each of his hits. He added an RBI on a groundout in the seventh inning as well. The 22-year-old is hitting .333 (7-for-21) with 11 RBI and three extra-base hits over his first six contests this season. With Jung Hoo Lee (shoulder) out for the year, Matos has a golden opportunity to claim a full-time major-league job if he can keep hitting well.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Lifts three-run homer

Matos went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Monday's 6-4 extra-inning loss to the Dodgers. Matos did his damage early, taking Yoshinobu Yamamoto deep in the second inning. The homer was Matos' first hit over three games this season, and he's added four RBI and two runs scored. The outfielder was slashing a paltry .218/.309/.355 over 31 contests with Triple-A Sacramento prior to his call-up, but he'll have a chance to show what he can do in the majors while filling in for Jung Hoo Lee (shoulder) in center field.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Moves up from Triple-A

The Giants recalled Matos from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. Matos will join the Giants and provide outfield depth after Michael Conforto (hamstring) was placed on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. At the Triple-A level this season, Matos has slashed .221/.312/.361 with three home runs and 17 RBI over 141 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Could replace Conforto on roster

Matos was pulled from a game at Triple-A Sacramento on Saturday in case he's needed to replace Michael Conforto (hamstring) on the Giants' roster, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Conforto is dealing with a right hamstring strain and is set to undergo an MRI on Sunday to determine the extent of the injury. Matos has spent virtually the entire season with Sacramento and has struggled, having come into play Saturday slashing .221/.312/.361 with three home runs and three steals. He and Heliot Ramos could be the top options in left field for San Francisco if Conforto misses time.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Sent to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Matos to Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. For much of spring training, Matos looked to be in good position to win an Opening Day roster spot while Austin Slater (elbow) missed time, but Slater was cleared to make a start in the outfield earlier this week at the tail end of the Giants' exhibition schedule and ended up avoiding a stint on the injured list. As a result, Matos found himself as the odd man out for a roster berth and will now head to Sacramento, where he should play on an everyday basis.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Unlikely to make roster

Matos is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. If this were a true meritocracy, Matos, who is slashing .256/.326/.615 with three home runs, one steal and an 11.6 percent strikeout rate in 43 plate appearances this spring, would likely make the team as a starter over one of Michael Conforto or Mike Yastrzemski. However, Conforto is due $18 million this year and Yastrzemski is earning $7.9 million this year via arbitration. The Giants could keep Matos on the roster in a part-time role, but Austin Slater is already ticketed for fourth outfielder duty and Tyler Fitzgerald is expected to get the final bench spot due to his defensive versatility. If an outfield spot opens up due to an injury or poor performance early in the season, Matos would be the obvious candidate to get the call.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Could see time in center

Matos may see time in center field until Austin Slater (elbow) is ready to play, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Previous projections had Matos as the everyday left fielder, but the addition of Jorge Soler at designated hitter will have a ripple effect with Michael Conforto needing an outfield spot on at least a platoon basis. Jung Hoo Lee still figures to get most of the time in center field, and it's possible Matos ends up functioning more like a fourth outfielder unless he wins a starting role out of camp. As long as Matos makes the team, he should be in the lineup regularly versus left-handed pitchers, though it's unclear how much manager Bob Melvin will rely on platoons to balance playing time in a deep outfield.

  • Giants' Luis Matos: Hits bench Thursday

Matos isn't in the Giants' lineup Thursday against the Dodgers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Matos is just 1-for-11 across hist last four games, so the Giants will give him a day off Thursday to regroup. The newly-promoted Tyler Fitzgerald will make his major-league debut in center field and bat ninth while Matos rests.
