Mets' Donovan Walton: Misses cut for Opening Day
Walton was informed Saturday that he will not make the Mets' Opening Day roster, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Walton's chances at landing a bench spot were looking up following Nick Madrigal's shoulder injury, but Walton will ultimately fall short of the big-league roster after going just 6-for-41 in the Grapefruit League. Luisangel Acuna now seems to be the most likely option to back up Francisco Lindor at shortstop in Queens.

Mets' Donovan Walton: Door open for bench job
Walton could make the Opening Day roster with Nick Madrigal (shoulder) set to begin the season on the 60-day IL, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
The Mets need a backup shortstop behind Francisco Lindor, and Walton is the best defensive option the team has in camp for the job. The 30-year-old has received 205 big-league plate appearances over five seasons split between the Mariners and Giants but managed just a .532 OPS, although his minor-league offensive numbers do offer some hope he could contribute with his bat as well -- Walton slashed .303/.377/.438 over 99 games for Triple-A Sacramento in 2024. The Mets would need to find room on the 40-man roster for Walton if they want to bring him north, and if Brett Baty proves in camp that he can play an adequate shortstop, he might get the first chance to fill the team's open bench spot.

Mets' Donovan Walton: Notches minor-league deal with Mets
Walton signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training.
Walton spent the 2024 season with the Giants organization, going 3-for-22 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored over nine games with San Francisco. He spent the majority of the year with Triple-A Sacramento, batting .303 with seven homers, 51 RBI, 53 runs scored and four stolen bases over 99 contests. Giants' Donovan Walton: Outrighted to Sacramento
Walton cleared waivers Friday and was sent outright to Triple-A Sacramento, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Walton appeared in nine games for the Giants in 2024, during which he went 3-for-22 with a home run and two RBI. Most of his time was spent in Sacramento, however, where he slashed .305/.377/.438 with 51 RBI across 387 plate appearances. The 30-year-old infielder appears likely to remain in the minors to start the 2025 campaign and continue serving as organizational depth.

Walton saw the majority of his playing time at the Triple-A level and in the majors in 2022, but he'll play on an everyday basis in Richmond for now after he missed the first two-plus months of the season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He was cleared to begin an extended rehab assignment June 9 and joined Richmond following the All-Star break after he played 22 games between the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and High-A Eugene.

Walton (shoulder) is hitting .250/.340/.318 with four walks against 11 strikeouts in 12 games since moving his rehab assignment to High-A Eugene on June 25.
Walton has been on the Triple-A Sacramento's 7-day injured list all season while working his way back from offseason surgery on his right shoulder, but he's been playing in rehab games since June 9 and should be close to rejoining the Giants' top minor-league affiliate. Between 10 games in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and 12 at Eugene, the 29-year-old is slashing .301/.407/.397 overall.

Walton (shoulder) began a rehab assignment Friday with the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate and has gone 3-for-6 with a double, a walk and two runs in two games.
Walton picked up starts at designated hitter and second base in the ACL in what marked his first game action since last August. Because of his prolonged absence after undergoing right shoulder surgery, Walton may need to ramp up over the course of several more games in the Complex League before he's activated from Triple-A Sacramento's 7-day injured list.

Walton had previously been on Sacramento's 7-day IL with an unspecified injury, but he played in three rehab games with the Giants' rookie-level Arizona Complex League affiliate this week. The 28-year-old suffered an apparent setback during the rehab assignment, however, and he'll now be sidelined for the rest of the season as a result. By calling up the injured Walton and placing him on the 60-day IL, the Giants were able to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for catcher Patrick Mazeika, who was claimed off waivers from the Mets on Sunday.

Walton's injury in the minors comes at a tough time for the major-league squad, which is now down Brandon Crawford (knee) and Thairo Estrada (head).
