Pirates' David Bednar: Remaining closer
Bednar remains the Pirates' closer after the team signed Aroldis Chapman this offseason, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.
Bednar has posted three consecutive excellent seasons with the Pirates, and he's served as the closer for the latter two. It therefore hardly comes as a surprise that he's locked into the role in 2024, but manager Derek Shelton went out of his way early in camp to make clear that Bednar is first in line for saves.... Pirates' David Bednar: Avoids arbitration with Pittsburgh
The Pirates and Bednar avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $4.51 million contract Thursday, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Bednar picked up the save in Sunday's 3-0 victory over the Marlins, striking out two over a perfect inning.
It was a fitting way for Bednar to wrap up the campaign, striking out his final two batters to close out a 3-0 Pirates' victory. Since Aug. 30, the 28-year-old Bednar pitched to a 1.35 ERA over 13.1 innings while converting 16 straight save chances. It certainly wasn't Bednar's cleanest outing -- he was charged with a run after allowing the first three batters to reach safely in the ninth, though he'd ultimately strike out CJ Abrams before coaxing a flyout from Lane Thomas to strand the bases loaded and seal a 7-6 victory. Bednar tossed a scoreless inning to earn a save against St. Louis on Saturday, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.
Bednar came on in the ninth frame with the Pirates up one run and gave up a leadoff single to Tommy Edman before hitting Jordan Walker with a pitch. The All-Star closer then saw the tying and winning runs move into scoring position on a Masyn Winn sacrifice but was able to notch a huge strikeout of Lars Nootbaar before getting Paul Goldschmidt to ground out to end the game. Bednar tossed one inning Friday, allowing an unearned run on his way to a save in a 4-2 extra-inning win over the Cardinals.
Bednar was called upon to protect a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 10th and retired all three batters he faced, though the phantom runner on second base came around to score after a couple sacrifice flies. The save was the right-hander's 30th of the season and he has now converted seven straight save chances since suffering a blown save Aug. 8 versus Atlanta. After the Cubs were blanked for eight innings, Ian Happ led off the ninth with a home run to cut the deficit to one, but Bednar then closed the door to pick up his 28th save. The home run was only the second allowed by Bednar all season. He had allowed only six total earned runs through July but has now allowed seven in 11.1 August innings. Bednar entered the game in the eighth inning with a one-run lead and got Christian Vazquez to ground out to end the frame.
