Cabrera did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings against the Pirates. He struck out three. With the Marlins in the thick of the NL wild-card race, manager Skip Schumaker didn't give Cabrera a long leash. The 25-year-old struggled with his control again Friday night, a common theme for his 2023 campaign as he entered the start with an ugly 5.9 BB/9. Cabrera ends the season with a 4.42 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 118:66 K:BB over 99.2 innings.... See More ... See Less

Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Drawing Friday's start
Cabrera will start for the Marlins on Friday in Pittsburgh, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Cabrera was seemingly either going to start Friday or Saturday and the Marlins have decided to hand him the ball in the series opener. Given the state of Miami's pitching staff, they could really use some length out of Cabrera on Friday. Unfortunately, he hasn't gone six innings in a start in the majors since early June.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Solid in seventh win
Cabrera (7-7) earned the win Sunday against Milwaukee, allowing one run on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out five. After struggling in a recent outing against the Brewers on Sept. 12 in which he allowed six walks, Cabrera displayed much better control and was able to secure the win Sunday. Since being recalled Sept. 6, the 25-year-old pitcher has a 1.89 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 22:10 K:BB in 19 innings over four starts. He has allowed two or fewer walks in three of those four outings. Cabrera's last start of the season is currently scheduled to be on the road against Pittsburgh.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Yields one run
Cabrera allowed one run on four hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in Monday's loss to the Mets. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. Cabrera made his first MLB start since July 31 and looked efficient with 51 strikes on 77 pitches. In three appearances since rejoining the Marlins, he's registered a 1.93 ERA and a 17:9 K:BB through 14 frames. He now owns a 4.35 ERA across 91 innings at the MLB level. Cabrera is currently projected for a home matchup with the Brewers this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Set to start Monday
Cabrera is expected to start Monday's game against the Mets, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The right-hander worked as the bulk pitcher in his first two appearances back with the Marlins, but he's set to start Monday's contest. Cabrera has still had control issues with eight walks in those two outings, but he's allowed just two runs on two hits with 13 strikeouts over 8.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Possible waiver wire pickups
Cabrera's second outing back from the minors Tuesday was a mixed bag. The six walks will immediately jump out at you, but it was his second straight allowing just one hit over four-plus innings. While his overall walk rate is high, his game-to-game walk totals have ranged from one extreme to another, and when he's on -- as we saw in his first outing back against the Dodgers, in which he struck out eight while allowing just three baserunners in four innings -- the Fantasy impact is considerable. Cabrera has two double digit-strikeout efforts in his 19 big-league outings this year, let's not forget. If you can tolerate the risk, the rewards could be considerable given his remaining matchups against the Mets, Brewers and Pirates (possibly following an opener). If nothing else, he's worth adding just to prevent your opponent from using him against you.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Championship pickups
The walks can sometimes sabotage Cabrera, but sometimes doesn't mean always. He's a bat-missing marvel at his best, so even if you can't bring yourself to start him over the final two weeks, you don't want to leave him out there for your opponent with matchups like the Mets, Brewers and Pirates ahead.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Walks six in bulk relief
Cabrera (6-7) took the loss Tuesday against the Brewers. He allowed two runs on one hit and six walks while striking out five over 4.2 innings. Cabrera followed up JT Chargois -- who tossed one scoreless frame as an opener -- and dished out six walks for the second time in his last three appearances. Despite his lack of control, Cabrera held the Brewers to just two runs on one hit. Since being called up from Triple-A Jacksonville on Sept. 6, Cabrera has worked exclusively as a bulk reliever, posting a 2.08 ERA and a 13:8 K:BB through 8.2 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Likely to work in bulk relief again
Cabrera is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher JT Chargois in Tuesday's game in Milwaukee, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Though he hasn't started since being called up from Triple-A Jacksonville last Wednesday, Cabrera looks to be the fifth member of the Miami rotation after Sandy Alcantara (forearm) was recently placed on the injured list. In his return to the big leagues last week, Cabrera was used behind Chargois in an 11-4 win over the Dodgers, tossing four scoreless frames and striking out eight while picking up the win. Given the strong results Cabrera provided in the bulk-relief role in his last appearance, the Marlins will likely deploy him in that capacity again with the hope he can deliver a repeat performance.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Possible waiver wire pickups
Cabrera's return to the Marlins was on the verge of unraveling when he walked two of the first three hitters Wednesday against the Dodgers, but he buckled down thereafter, striking out eight over four one-hit innings. His already impressive velocity was up 1-2 mph across the board, and that combined with ridiculous movement left even Freddie Freeman shaking his head. Though he got the bulk of the work, he was actually the fourth pitcher used in this game, so questions remain about his role. And though he threw 68 percent of his pitches for strikes, it wouldn't be the first time he faked us out with improved control. Still, if you're looking for pitching upside, Cabrera's was on full display in this one.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Sharp as bulk reliever
Cabrera (6-6) picked up the win in Wednesday's 11-4 victory over the Dodgers, allowing one hit and two walks over four scoreless relief innings. He struck out eight. While initial reports suggested the right-hander would be joining the rotation, particularly after Sandy Alcantara (forearm) landed on the IL, Cabrera was instead deployed as a bulk reliever and didn't take the mound until after three other Marlins pitchers had worked a combined four frames. The gambit by manager Skip Schumaker paid off, as Cabrera generated 25 called or swinging strikes on only 72 pitches as he dominated the Dodgers and collected his first first big-league win since early June. It's not clear what his usage will be moving forward, but if he stays on turn, the 25-year-old's next outing would come early next week in Milwaukee.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Candidate for call-up Wednesday
Cabrera could be called up from Triple-A Jacksonville to start Wednesday's game against the Dodgers in Miami, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The Marlins appear set to break in a new member of the rotation this week, as Miami has already confirmed Jesus Luzardo (Tuesday) and Braxton Garrett (Thursday) as starting pitchers for two of its games against Los Angeles while having yet to name a starter for the middle game of the series. Assuming the Marlins don't opt to treat Wednesday's game as a bullpen day, Cabrera would seemingly be the top candidate to fill the opening. Since being optioned to the minors Aug. 1, Cabrera has shown improved command over his five starts with Jacksonville, accruing a 2.22 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 30:12 K:BB while allowing just two home runs in 28.1 innings.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Making progress with command
Cabrera has looked good in two starts for Triple-A Jacksonville since his demotion, allowing just two earned runs over 12 innings with a 13:3 K:BB, Jordan McPherson of The Miami Herald reports. Both runs came on solo homers, but the Marlins are more concerned with Cabrera simply getting the ball into the strike zone consistently, trusting that the movement on his plus stuff will take care of the rest. "You watch him, [but] you don't watch the results," manager Skip Schumaker said Saturday before the right-hander's most recent outing, in which he struck out 10 over six scoreless innings against Norfolk. "When you're watching him, he's commanding all of his pitches again, which is what we're looking for. Hopefully he continues to do that. If he continues to do that and knock the door down, he'll come back up." Cabrera is eligible to return to the big-league roster as soon as Wednesday, and with Eury Perez struggling to last five innings since rejoining the Miami rotation, the two young hurlers could switch places for this weekend's road series against the Dodgers.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Heads to Triple-A
Cabrera was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Cabrera struggled mightily with his command in his last start Monday versus the Phillies, yielding six walks over just three innings. The right-hander heads back to the farm holding an overall 4.79 ERA and 1.47 WHIP through 17 major-league starts this year.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Cleared to start Monday
Cabrera is listed as the Marlins' probable starter for Monday's game against the Phillies. In his last outing July 25, Cabrera, who was taking the hill for the second time since returning from the 15-day injured list following a one-month absence due to a shoulder issue, was lifted after just two innings and 53 pitches in his start against the Rays due to a blister on his throwing hand, according to Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. Though blisters have been a recurring problem for Cabrera this season, he presumably came out of his between-starts bullpen session without issue and will return to the bump Monday on five days' rest.... Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Lasts two innings in loss
Cabrera (5-6) took the loss Tuesday, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks over two innings against the Rays. After Cabrera pitched a clean opening frame, the Rays rallied to put up three runs with two outs in the second inning, forcing Cabrera out of the game after throwing 53 pitches. The Marlins have understandably been cautious with Cabrera after he missed over a month with a shoulder injury. He's allowed four runs over seven innings in two starts since returning to the rotation. Overall, Cabrera sports a 4.74 ERA with a 1.42 WHIP and 90:46 K:BB through 16 starts (74 innings) this season. His next outing is currently lined up for next week against Philadelphia.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Allows one run in return from IL
Cabrera (shoulder) didn't factor in the decision Tuesday at St. Louis after he struck out six and gave up one run on two hits and three walks across five innings. The right-hander returned from a month-long stint on the injured list due to a shoulder impingement Tuesday, and he fired five scoreless frames before Brendan Donovan's leadoff homer in the sixth. Cabrera finished at 74 pitches and could continue to have some workload limitations in his next couple starts since he rejoined Miami's rotation without a rehab assignment.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Expected to start Tuesday
Cabrera (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list Tuesday and is listed as the probable starter for the Marlins' game against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Though the Marlins haven't officially confirmed that Cabrera will rejoin the rotation Tuesday, all signs point to the right-hander being activated after he threw a five-inning simulated game last Thursday before rejoining the big club on its road trip over the weekend. Because he hasn't pitched in an official game since June 13, Cabrera could have some workload limitations as he steps back into the rotation in St. Louis, so fantasy managers in shallower leagues may not want to jump the gun and activate him Tuesday.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Beginning assignment Saturday
Cabrera (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Single-A Jupiter on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Cabrera has been on the shelf since June 17 with a right shoulder impingement, and he now seems to be nearing the end of his recovery process. It's unclear how many rehab starts he'll need, but odds are Cabrera returns to the big-league rotation before the end of July.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Edward Cabrera: Throws bullpen session
Cabrera (shoulder) threw a 22-pitch bullpen session Friday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Cabrera only used his fastball during the workout, but he told reporters afterward that he felt "super great." On the shelf since June 17 because of a right shoulder impingement, the 25-year-old is trending toward a return to the Marlins' rotation shortly after the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less
