• Brewers' DL Hall: Stingy as opener

  Hall gave up one hit and two walks over three scoreless innings as the opener in Wednesday's 9-1 win over the Reds. He struck out three. The southpaw retired the first six batters he faced before running out of gas in the third, but Hall was able to escape a bases loaded, one-out jam and leave the mound after 48 pitches (23 strikes). He's served as the opener in tandem with Quinn Priester for two straight turns through the rotation, with Hall delivering six scoreless innings and a 7:3 K:BB. However, it's unclear whether the duo will be needed again as Brandon Woodruff (ankle) may have made his last rehab start Tuesday.

• Brewers' DL Hall: Works three scoreless frames

  Hall took a no-decision as the Brewers' opening pitcher for Friday's 6-2 win over the Phillies, tossing three scoreless, no-hit innings and giving up one walk while striking out four. Since being reinstated from the 60-day injured list Monday, Hall has made two appearances, giving up one earned run over 5.1 innings. Though he was being built up a starter during his minor-league rehab assignment, Hall looks like he could fill a hybrid role that includes occasional opener assignments as well as more traditional relief appearances. Hall ended up working in tandem Friday with Quinn Priester, who covered the final six innings en route to notching his second win of the season.

  Hall (1-0) picked up a win while working 2.1 innings of relief in Monday's 3-2 victory over the Red Sox, allowing one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out one. Fresh off being activated from the 60-day injured list Monday after missing the first two months of the season due to a left lat strain, Hall was quickly thrust into action. With starter Chad Patrick getting lifted from the game with two outs and a runner on second base in the top of the fifth, Hall came out of the bullpen to record the final out of the frame and then covered the next two innings before walking the lone batter he faced in the eighth. The Milwaukee bullpen was able to preserve the lead for the rest of the game, allowing Hall to come away with the win in his season debut. Hall had gotten stretched out to three innings during his rehab assignment and could be a candidate to make a start or bulk-relief appearance this weekend in Philadelphia, but the Brewers haven't confirmed their plans for the young southpaw.

  Hall (lat) struck out six and allowed two hits and one walk over three scoreless innings in a rehab start Wednesday with Triple-A Nashville. After kicking off his rehab assignment May 3 in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League and making two starts, Hall has moved up to Nashville for his most recent two outings. He's delivered scoreless appearances in both of his Triple-A appearances, though he was much more efficient Wednesday while pushing up his pitch count to 57. The left-hander looks like he'll continue to get stretched out as a starter while he works his way back from the left lat strain that has kept him on the shelf all season, but the Brewers likely won't have a spot in the rotation available for him once he returns from the 60-day injured list. Hall has a minor-league option remaining and could stick around in Nashville as a member of the rotation once his 30-day rehab window closes, or the Brewers could have him serve as a multi-inning option out of the big-league bullpen.

  Brewers manager Pat Murphy said Wednesday that Hall is recovering from a lat strain and won't throw for two weeks before being re-evaluated, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports. Hall had been expected to compete for a rotation spot in spring training after he worked out of the bullpen toward the end of his first season in Milwaukee, but the lat injury looks as though it could foil those plans. Even if the southpaw is cleared to resume throwing by the end of February, he would likely need at least a few weeks to get stretched out for starting duty before the season gets underway March 27. With that in mind, a relief role may represent Hall's clearest path to making the Opening Day roster, if he doesn't instead require a stint on the injured list.

Four singles in the first inning led to two runs for the Diamondbacks. It was a step backwards for Hall, who was working on 12.2 scoreless innings across his last three appearances coming into Sunday. He's shown upside at times but owns a 4.91 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 38:20 K:BB in 36.2 innings. It's possible he gets another start, but he'll likely return to a relief role for now.

Hall made his first big-league appearance since going on the shelf in late April with a sprained left knee and came out firing. Through three scoreless innings, Hall had punched out six batters, but he got a little wild in the fourth frame. He allowed Spencer Steer to steal a base on a wild pitch, walked Stuart Fairchild on six pitches and hit TJ Friedl with a pitch as part of a two-run inning for Cincinnati. He bounced back by retiring the first two batters of the fifth frame but was yanked after surrendering a solo home run to Tyler Stephenson and issuing a walk to Steer. The Brewers haven't clarified what Hall's role will look like moving forward, as the club already has five healthy starting pitchers and would have to expand the rotation to six men to open up a regular spot for him. The left-hander could be a candidate to serve in a multi-inning relief role if the Brewers opt not to make him a fixture in the rotation, and he also has minor-league options remaining if the organization prefers to have him stay on a starter's schedule at Triple-A Nashville.

Milwaukee already has five healthy starters, so unless manager Pat Murphy plans to expand the rotation to six men, Hall could be headed to the bullpen following Sunday's outing, which will be his first with the big club since April 20. Before landing on the IL due to a left knee sprain, Hall's spot in the rotation may have already been on thin ice, as he submitted a 7.71 ERA and 2.27 WHIP across 16.1 innings over his four starts with the big club this season. The left-hander displayed better form over the final three outings of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Nashville, logging a 2.77 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 12:6 K:BB across 13 innings. Hall topped out at five innings and 76 pitches during his rehab assignment, so he shouldn't be operating under any significant workload restrictions Sunday.

While it's unclear if Hall is scheduled to pitch Sunday in Nashville's game against Norfolk, the right-hander at least isn't being shut down from throwing any longer after his rehab assignment was extended when he was hit in the left forearm by a comebacker in his last outing July 9. Though Hall has yet to cover more than three innings in any of his nine outings between his first two separate minor-league rehab assignments, general manager Matt Arnold said last Sunday that the southpaw will get stretched back out to start as he resumes pitching with Nashville. Hall had previously made all four of his appearances with Milwaukee as a starter before landing on the injured list April 21 with a left knee sprain.
