  • Reds' Bubba Thompson: Back with Cincinnati

The Reds claimed Thompson off waivers from the Twins on Tuesday, C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports. Thompson had been claimed by the Reds back in October before being dumped two months after that. He's now found his way back to Cincinnati as he continues his waivers merry-go-round. The speedy outfielder will compete for a reserve role.

  • Twins' Bubba Thompson: Removed from 40-man roster

Thompson was designated for assignment by the Twins on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Thompson was claimed off waivers by the Twins just last month, but his stay on the 40-man roster didn't last long. The 25-year-old speedster has slashed just .242/.286/.305 in 241 career major-league plate appearances.

  • Yankees' Bubba Thompson: Lands with Yankees via waivers

The Yankees claimed Thompson off waivers from the Reds on Thursday. Thompson has slashed just .242/.286/.305 in 241 career major-league plate appearances but offers plus speed and the ability to play all three outfield positions. The 25-year-old first-round pick will compete for a reserve role in spring training.

  • Reds' Bubba Thompson: Exits 40-man roster

Thompson was designated for assignment by the Reds on Thursday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports. Thompson was claimed off waivers by the Reds in October and will now go through the waiver process again as the club frees up a 40-man roster spot for the re-signing of Buck Farmer. The 25-year-old has elite speed but has slashed just .242/.286/.305 in 241 career major-league plate appearances.

  • Reds' Bubba Thompson: Claimed by Cincinnati

Cincinnati claimed Thompson off waivers from the Royals on Thursday. The former Rangers prospect was let go by Texas this past August and finished out the 2023 season with the Royals' Triple-A affiliate in Omaha. Thompson has great speed and is only 25 years old, but he owns a weak .242/.286/.305 batting line with one home run in 241 career major-league plate appearances.

  • Royals' Bubba Thompson: Claimed by KC

The Royals claimed Thompson off waivers from Texas on Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Omaha. The Rangers DFA'd Thompson on Friday after he slashed just .170/.237/.283 through 60 plate appearances in the majors. The former top prospect will now get a second chance with the Royals, but he will have to prove himself with their Triple-A affiliate in Omaha before cracking the major-league lineup.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Designated for assignment

Thompson was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Friday. Texas selected Thompson as the 26th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft out of an Alabama high school and he ranked as a top-100 prospect at one point, but the 25-year-old outfielder is now off the 40-man roster after slashing just .242/.286/.305 in 241 major-league plate appearances since his debut in August of 2022. He'll be an intriguing reclamation project for some club as he heads into DFA limbo. J.P. Martinez is joining the Rangers in a corresponding move.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Optioned to Round Rock

Texas optioned Thompson to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday. This move opens up a 26-man roster spot for catcher Austin Hedges, who was acquired from the Pirates ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Thompson, 25, has slashed just .170/.237/.283 in 37 games this season at the major-league level.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Gets rare start

Thompson started in left field and went 0-for-3 in Monday's 5-0 win over Detroit. Thompson made his first start since May 12 and was eventually removed for pinch hitter Travis Jankowski. With Mitch Garver's (knee) pending activation expected this week, Thompson's spot on the roster is in jeopardy. He's 8-for-51 (.157) over 35 games.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Fills in, steals bag

Thompson entered Saturday's game after left fielder Josh Smith was removed due to foot soreness. He went 0-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base in a 5-0 win over Oakland Thompson walked for the third time in the last two games and stole a base in each contest. The light-hitting outfielder had walked once over his first 45 plate appearances before his three free passes over the last six PAs. With the Athletics scheduled to throw right-hander Drew Rucinski on Sunday, it's likely Texas will deploy the lefty-hitting Robbie Grossman in left instead of Thompson.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Steals, scores in loss

Thompson went 0-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 9-7 extra-inning loss to Oakland. Thompson made his first start in seven games, which is appropriate for a player hitting .178. He's reached base 11 times (eight hits, three walks) over 49 plate appearances and attempted four steals (caught once). Thompson's always looking to run, so the two walks were an encouraging sign.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Registers second steal

Thompson went 0-for-1 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 10-1 win over the Angels. The Rangers had a great ninth inning -- Thompson initially entered as a pinch runner for Robbie Grossman, and he still got a turn at the plate, flying out to end a seven-run rally. Playing time is still a bit sparse for Thompson, and it's deserved, as he's slashing a meager .186/.205/.326 through 45 plate appearances. He's 2-for-3 on stolen base attempts, and he's added three RBI, eight runs scored, four doubles and a triple.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Collects two hits in win

Thompson started in left field, going 2-for-4 and was caught stealing in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Yankees. Thompson, who made his first start in five games, entered the contest with one hit over his last 17 at-bats. He's always a threat to steal but getting on base has been problematic for Thompson, who has one walk and a .258 OBP over 32 plate appearances. Travis Jankowski, who started in center field for a resting Leody Taveras on Saturday, has emerged as a semi-regular, which makes Thompson's roster spot precarious. When Corey Seager (hamstring) returns, Thompson could be sent down while either Josh Smith or Ezequiel Duran remain to serve as the fifth outfielder.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Sparks slumping offense

Thompson started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 8-2 win over the Cubs. The Rangers' offense slumbered through the first two games of the series in Chicago, before Thompson and Travis Jankowski made their first starts of the season Sunday. The duo combined to go 3-for-7 with three RBI, three extra-base hits, four runs and a stolen base out the final spots in the order. To make room in the lineup for both players, Adolis Garcia moved from center field to designated hitter, and slumping right fielder Robbie Grossman (one hit in last 18 at-bats) rode the pine. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy has much to consider going forward. Center fielder Leody Taveras (oblique) is on rehab assignment and could return as early as Monday. For Thompson to land a regular gig, he could be part of the mix in left field, which had been penciled in as Grossman's job (with a healthy Taveras in center) and was being filled by Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Remains on bench vs. lefty

Thompson remains out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Phillies. Thompson appeared as though he might get a look in an everyday role to begin the season with top center fielder Leody Taveras (oblique) on the inured list, but Thompson has instead handled a reserve role for the entirety of Texas' three-game series with Philadelphia. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy may not even be viewing the righty-hitting Thompson as a short-side platoon player, as the 24-year-old will continue to ride pine Sunday even with a southpaw (Bailey Falter) on the mound for Philadelphia. Adolis Garcia will start in center field once again and is being flanked by Ezequiel Duran in left field and Robbie Grossman in right field.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: On the bench for opener

Thompson is not in the Rangers' lineup for Thursday's opener against the Phillies. With Leody Taveras (oblique) out, the Rangers have elected to slide Adolis Garcia over to center field and he will be flanked by Josh Smith and Robbie Grossman. Thompson should still be in the mix for starts in center until Taveras returns, but it doesn't appear he's the preferred option.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Could take over in center field

Thompson is a candidate to handle center field for the Rangers while Leody Taveras (oblique) is sidelined. Taveras has a low-grade oblique strain, which has his status for Opening Day up in the air. Thompson might have been on the outside looking in for a roster spot if Taveras had been healthy, but he's probably the team's best defensive option in center field for as long as Taveras is sidelined. While his ability with the bat is still in question, Thompson's ability to steal bases would make him a viable fantasy option in deep leagues if he's getting regular at-bats. Texas could also consider moving Adolis Garcia from right field to center.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Returns to lineup Sunday

Thompson is leading off and playing center field Sunday against the Angels in Cactus League play. Thompson was scheduled to have the day off after being scratched Saturday due to tightness in his legs, but after Leody Taveras was scratched from the lineup Sunday due to left side tightness, the speedy outfielder was called into action. Considering the time of year and the exhibition nature of Cactus League games, Thompson is obviously feeling healthy and should be fine for the start of the campaign.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Scratched Saturday

Thompson was scratched Saturday due to tightness in his legs, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. Thompson made a noteworthy contribution in his MLB debut last season, swiping 18 bases over 55 games. However, it's unclear if there's a spot for him on the major-league roster to start 2023. He has the most center-field experience among the Rangers' depth outfielders, so he could give Leody Taveras a break when needed, but the team may want him to get regular playing time at Triple-A Round Rock. In that case, right fielder Adolis Garcia would cover center when Taveras sits.

  • Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Out of Sunday's lineup

Thompson is not in Sunday's lineup against the Guardians. Thompson, who is hitting .292 with 21 strikeouts, four walks and nine steals in 22 games this month, has started three of the last five games for Texas. Kole Calhoun is starting at designated hitter while Adolis Garcia mans right field.
