Clement was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports. Cam Eden is coming up to absorb Clement's spot on the Blue Jays' roster. Clement boasts an .885 OPS in 52 plate appearances in the majors this season, but his opportunities have been few and far between.... See More ... See Less

Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Moves into utility role
Clement is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Rangers. Though he drew the start at shortstop in Wednesday's 10-0 loss to Texas, Clement has moved back into a utility role since Bo Bichette was reinstated from the 10-day injured list last Friday. Clement is now on the bench for the third time in four games and is expected to see few opportunities moving forward now that Toronto has recently welcomed both of its regular starters on the left side of the infield (Bichette and Matt Chapman) back from the IL.... Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Nabs third straight start
Clement will start at shortstop and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Nationals. He'll man shortstop for the third game in a row after going 2-for-7 at the dish between the first two contests of the series with Washington. The Blue Jays seem content to go with Clement as their primary option at shortstop until Bo Bichette (quadricep) is cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Returns to majors
Clement was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. The 27-year-old utility man will provide some infield depth while Matt Chapman (finger) is on the 10-day injured list and while Bo Bichette (quadricep) is day-to-day. Clement has a career .542 OPS over parts of three big-league seasons.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Sent down to Triple-A
The Blue Jays optioned Clement to Triple-A Buffalo on Monday. Clement has had a couple stints with the Blue Jays this season but has logged just nine plate appearances. He'll return to a utility role at Buffalo.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Recalled from Triple-A
Clement was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca reports. Clement is 2-for-5 at the dish during his brief time in the majors this season. He'll provide depth along the infield for the Blue Jays.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Ernie Clement: Inks minors deal with Toronto
Clement signed a minor-league contract Tuesday with the Blue Jays which includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Clement struggled to attract interest all winter after batting just .184/.243/.209 over 179 major-league plate appearances last season between the Guardians and Athletics. The soon-to-be 27-year-old will function as organizational infield depth for Toronto heading into the 2023 campaign. He has also played some corner outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Ernie Clement: Released by Oakland
Clement was released by the Athletics on Sunday. Clement was designated for assignment by Oakland last weekend, and he'll become a free agent as part of a series of roster cuts Sunday. The 26-year-old played in 70 games between the Guardians and Athletics last year and hit .184 with 19 runs and six RBI.... See More ... See Less -
Athletics' Ernie Clement: Claimed by A's
Clement was claimed off waivers by the Athletics on Friday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. The Guardians designated Clement for assignment earlier this week, but Oakland -- an organization with much less depth -- added him to the 40-man roster. Clement hit .200 with zero home runs and zero steals in 145 at-bats this season, but his defensive versatility is a selling point from a real-life perspective.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Cast off 40-man roster
The Guardians designated Clement for assignment Wednesday. Clement was moved off the 40-man roster in order for the Guardians to clear up a spot for rookie outfielder Will Brennan, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Columbus. While filling a utility role for Cleveland this season, Clement had seen action in 64 games and produced a .200/.264/.221 slash line over 161 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Recalled by Cleveland
Clement was recalled from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Clement was demoted to Columbus in early August and will return to Cleveland with big-league rosters expanding to 28 players. The 26-year-old has a .492 OPS in 158 plate appearances in the bigs this season and should fill a utility role while up in the majors.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Heads to minors
The Guardians optioned Clement to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday. Clement will surrender his role as the Guardians' top utility infielder to Tyler Freeman, who was called up from Columbus in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old Clement had seen scarce playing time at the big-league level this season, with most of his opportunities coming against left-handed pitching. He hit just .203 with three extra-base hits -- all doubles -- in 158 plate appearances with Cleveland.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Hitting better in July
Clement has gone 7-for-22 (.318) through nine games in July. Clement hit safely in five straight games before going 0-for-1 off the bench against the Tigers on Saturday. Andres Gimenez (foot) left the contest in the fifth inning, and if he misses time, Clement could see a corresponding uptick in opportunities. The 26-year-old utility man is slashing just .211/.271/.234 with five RBI, 14 runs scored and three doubles through 141 plate appearances. Owen Miller could also pick up time at the keystone, which makes it unclear if Clement will see that much of a boost if Gimenez if out beyond the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Back on bench Tuesday
Clement is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Twins. Clement made two straight starts at third base to close out the Guardians' weekend series with the Dodgers, but he'll move back into his usual reserve role Tuesday with Jose Ramirez (thumb) ready to go after a brief absence. Along with Ramirez, designated hitter Franmil Reyes (hamstring) is back in action Tuesday, putting the Guardians lineup back at full strength. As a result, Clement is expected to see limited opportunities moving forward, with most of the starts he receives likely to come against left-handed pitching.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Playing time still limited
Clement has started four of the Guardians' 11 games in June. He's started to mix into the lineup with a little more frequency, but Clement remains without a clear path to at-bats. He's gone 2-for-14 with three strikeouts and a walk through five contests in June, dropping his season slash line to .214/.275/.250 in 92 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Back on bench after three starts
Clement is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics. Clement started each of the last three games at either second or third base, going 1-for-11 over that stretch. Though he's out of the lineup Sunday, Clement has indirectly benefited from the absence of Amed Rosario (wrist), who is also on the bench after missing the previous two contests. The Guardians believe Rosario's injury isn't a long-term concern, so Clement's playing time should begin to trend down once Rosario checks back into the lineup.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Getting second start
Clement will start at second base and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Reds, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. He'll be filling in at the keystone for the lefty-hitting Andres Gimenez, who is getting a breather with southpaw Nick Lodolo on the hill. Gimenez isn't part of a strict platoon, but the righty-hitting Clement's ability to play multiple infield and outfield spots could allow him to pick up steady starts against southpaws, especially while he's performing well. Through three games, Clement has gone 4-for-8 with two walks, three runs and an RBI.... See More ... See Less -
Guardians' Ernie Clement: Slated to begin year in majors
Clement has made the Guardians' Opening Day roster, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Clement secured a reserve role with the major-league club after he hit .455 with two home runs, three doubles, eight RBI, five runs and four strikeouts across 10 Cactus League appearances this spring. He slashed .231/.285/.339 with three homers, 16 runs and nine RBI across 40 games with Cleveland last year.... See More ... See Less -
Indians' Ernie Clement: Called up from Triple-A
Cleveland recalled Clement from Triple-A Columbus ahead of Wednesday's game against the Twins. He'll join Cleveland as a replacement on the active roster for Amed Rosario (personal), who was placed on the bereavement list. Andres Gimenez will start at shortstop Wednesday and is expected to serve as the primary option at the position while Rosario is away from the team, but Clement could push Owen Miller and Yu Chang for work at second base in the short term.... See More ... See Less -
Indians' Ernie Clement: Reinstated, sent down
Clement (undisclosed) was reinstated from the COVID-19 injured list and optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Tom Withers of the Associated Press reports. Clement had been on the injured list since Aug. 26, but he began a rehab assignment at Double-A Akron on Saturday. He went 1-for-7 with three strikeouts across his two appearances and will remain in the minors at Triple-A Columbus after right-hander Aaron Civale (finger) was reinstated from the 60-day IL on Tuesday.... Andrew Stoeten@AndrewStoeten5D agoTo me it lends credence to the Ohtani rumours that the Blue Jays are clearly doing nothing until they figure that one big thing out. Very relatable. I wish them luck.
