Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow indicated Wednesday that Abreu could receive significant playing time next season, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Breslow was being asked about Boston's outfield situation in the wake of the Alex Verdugo trade, and he said he has no current plans to make any outside additions. That indicates both Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela are poised to play a lot alongside Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida. Abreu made a nice first impression with Boston in 2023, posting an .862 OPS with two homers and three steals over 28 contests.... See More ... See Less

Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Takes seat versus lefty
Abreu is absent from the lineup Friday at Baltimore. Rob Refsnyder, Ceddanne Rafaela and Adam Duvall will start across the outfield for the Red Sox as they take on left-hander John Means. Abreu has drawn only seven plate appearances versus lefties since being promoted to Boston in August.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Knocks in two
Abreu started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's 9-7 loss to the Rays. The Red Sox made what looked like a blowout early into a fun affair. Abreu's two-run double in the fifth inning followed Enmanuel Valdez's three-run home run in the fourth, cutting the Rays' early seven-run lead to 7-5. Both Abreu and Valdez, who were acquired from the Astros last season in exchange for Christian Vazquez, have gotten their first tastes of the majors in 2023. Abreu, who made a second consecutive start after missing a handful of games last week due to a hand injury, has been a bright spot since being called up in late August, posting a .371/.435/.565 slash line in 23 games.... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Back in action Sunday
Abreu (hand) is starting in left field and batting sixth Sunday against the White Sox, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The 24-year-old has been held out of the starting nine since Sept. 16 with a hand injury, but he'll rejoin the lineup for Sunday's series finale versus Chicago. Abreu has a .364/.435/.509 slash line with a homer, three steals, 10 RBI and eight runs in 62 plate appearances since making his MLB debut Aug. 22.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: On bench again Saturday
Abreu (hand) remains out of the lineup for Saturday's game against the White Sox. Abreu has not started a game since Sept. 17 due to left hand soreness, though he has entered as a pinch runner since suffering the injury. The rookie remains day-to-day with Ceddanne Rafaela going out to center field Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Remains out Friday
Abreu (hand) remains out of the lineup for Friday's game against the White Sox. Abreu hasn't started a game since Sunday due to left hand soreness, although he has appeared as a pinch runner since then. The rookie outfielder is considered day-to-day. Adam Duvall is handling center field Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Out again Wednesday
Abreu (hand) is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Rangers. The Red Sox have an off day Thursday, so perhaps the extra couple days off will allow Abreu to get right for this weekend's home series against the White Sox. Adam Duvall is starting in center field and batting fifth against righty Jon Gray.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Sitting against lefty
Abreu is absent from the lineup Sunday at Toronto. Ceddanne Rafaela will start in center field and bat leadoff as the Red Sox take on Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu. Abreu, a left-handed hitter, has gone 1-for-6 with three strikeouts in limited major-league action versus southpaws.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Late addition to lineup
Abreu will lead off and play center field Saturday against Toronto after Triston Casas (shoulder) was scratched, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Abreu had been set for an off day, but Casas' continued injury troubles led to a change in plans. He'll push Adam Duvall to left field, which moves Masataka Yoshida to designated hitter and Justin Turner from DH to Casas' spot at first base.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Heads to bench
Abreu will be on the bench for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Abreu sits after starting nine of the previous 11 games, a stretch in which he hit .382/.432/.471 with a pair of steals. Adam Duvall starts in center field Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Goes 5-for-5, swipes bag
Abreu went 5-for-5 with a walk, a double, three RBI, two runs scored and a steal in Saturday's 13-12 loss against the Orioles. Abreu stuffed the stat sheet Saturday, reaching base in all six plate appearances and stealing his first big-league base. The 24-year-old rookie has looked impressive through his first 12 career games, posting a .353 batting average with a home run, four doubles, eight RBI and six runs in 34 at-bats.... See More ... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Returns from paternity leave
The Red Sox activated Abreu (personal) from the paternity list Thursday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Abreu has been away from the team since Monday spending time with his growing family. He's gotten off to a hot start in his major-league career, going 6-for-17 with a homer and five RBI across his first five games. David Hamilton was optioned to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Not in lineup Friday
Abreu is not in the lineup Friday against the Dodgers. Abreu has gone 6-for-12 with two doubles, a homer and five RBI through his first three major-league games, but he'll grab some rest Friday as the Red Sox open a three-game series versus the visiting Dodgers. Masataka Yoshida, Adam Duvall and Alex Verdugo are starting across the outfield for Boston.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Four hits, first homer in win
Abreu went 4-for-5 with a double, a home run and four RBI in Thursday's 17-1 victory over the Astros. Abreu extended the Red Sox lead to 3-0 in the second inning with his first big-league homer, a 431-foot blast off J.P. France. The 24-year-old outfielder is now 6-for-12 over his first three games with Boston after batting .274 with 22 homers and a .929 OPS in 86 Triple-A contests. Abreu's power potential makes him an intriguing option in deeper leagues, as he could see more playing time while Jarren Duran (toe) is sidelined.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Makes first MLB start
Abreu started in left field and went 0-for-4 with a walk and an RBI in Wednesday's 7-5 extra-inning win over Houston. Abreu made his first MLB start and knocked in his first RBI with a fifth-inning groundout. He was later caught stealing in the 10th inning. The 24-year-old outfielder could fit into the mix in the coming days, as Jarren Duran (toe) is on the injured list and Adam Duvall fouled a ball off his foot during Wednesday's game.... See More ... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Enters for ejected Verdugo
Abreu went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Tuesday's 7-3 loss to Houston. Abreu made his MLB debut when he entered to play right field after Alex Verdugo was ejected. Abreu was called up to Boston after Jarren Duran (toe) was added to the injured list. He was also one of the hottest hitters in the minors during August, slashing .424/.528/.949 with nine homers, four doubles, 25 RBI, 18 runs, 12 walks, 10 strikeouts and three steals in 17 games for Triple-A Worcester.... Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Gets first call against former team
Abreu was recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, although he is not in the lineup against the Astros, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Abreu was traded from Houston to Boston a little over a year ago as part of the package that netted the Astros Christian Vazquez, and he could see his first big-league action against the team that originally signed him out of Venezuela in 2017. The lefty-hitting outfielder was already on the 40-man roster, and his ability to play all three outfield spots could come in handy for Boston with Jarren Duran (toe) on the shelf. Abreu hit .274 with 22 home runs and eight steals in 86 games at Triple-A. Adam Duvall figures to be the primary center fielder while Duran is out.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Protected from Rule 5 Draft
Abreu was added to Boston's 40-man roster Tuesday, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. Abreu spent all of 2022 at the Double-A level, slashing .249/.402/.439 between the Red Sox and Astros' affiliates. He has shown potential as a real threat on the bases, successfully swiping 31 bags last season and getting caught stealing just three times.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Wilyer Abreu: Dealt to Boston
The Red Sox acquired Abreu and Enmanuel Valdez from the Astros on Monday in exchange for Christian Vazquez, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Abreu is the secondary piece in this deal, as Valdez is the headliner. A 23-year-old outfielder, Abreu hit .249/.399/.459 with 15 home runs and 23 steals in 411 plate appearances at Double-A Corpus Christi this season. He strikes out a little too much (26.3 percent) given his age relative to level, but his 19 percent walk rate is quite impressive.... See More ... See Less
