Brooks Lee, the No. 8 overall pick in 2022, held his own in his first trip to the majors and enters spring training looking set to win an everyday role at third base or second base. Lee suffered a herniated disc in his back during spring training which delayed his debut until June. He was quickly called up after posting a .974 OPS at Triple-A. He had a hot start to his major league career by hitting .300 with a .816 OPS in his first ten games, but then hit just .197 with a .514 OPS the rest of the season. Brooks has a good eye at the plate and makes excellent contact (just a 14.6% K%), but struggled to generate power in the majors with a 40.1% ground-ball rate. He can play around the infield, but may be Minnesota's best fielding third baseman. He'll compete for a starting job at second base or third base and could improve dramatically in his second full season.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Sitting with back tightness

Lee was scratched from the lineup ahead of Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Boston due to lower-back tightness, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Lee has been given the day-to-day label by the team, so there's no reason to believe his injury is anything serious. He'll take a day to recover Thursday; meanwhile, Jose Miranda will pick up some extra reps at the hot corner before the start of the season.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: First post-Lewis injury start at 3B

Lee is starting at third base and batting seventh in Monday's Grapefruit League game versus the Pirates. Royce Lewis strained his left hamstring strain during Grapefruit League action Sunday and is slated to open the season on the injured list. Lee could be the first choice to occupy the hot corner while Lewis is shelved, which would lead to more reps at second base for Willi Castro and Edouard Julien, who is starting at the keystone Monday.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Hits second spring homer

Lee went 1-for-3 with his second home run of the spring in Sunday's loss to Baltimore. He's hitting .308 (8-for-26) in nine spring training games. Lee is competing with Edouard Julien for the starting second base job this spring with Willi Castro also likely to get time at the position. Lee is outperforming Julien so far this spring at the plate, and Julien has struggled in the field (two errors Sunday). However, Minnesota's plans for second base and Lee's role aren't clear at this point.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Competing for 2B job

Lee is battling Edouard Julien for the starting second base job this spring with Willi Castro also likely to get time at the position, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Lee started at shortstop in his spring debut Sunday and went 0-for-3. Lee could make the Opening Day roster and work around the infield, as he may be a better option with the glove at third base, but the Twins have decided for now to keep Royce Lewis at the hot corner. It's possible Lee could also begin the season in the minors after he posted just a .580 OPS last season in the majors over 50 games. His ability to secure a starting spot or a reserve role will be a key job battle for Minnesota this spring.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Back on bench Thursday

Lee is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Guardians. The switch-hitting Lee had started in each of the Twins' last three matchups with right-handed pitchers, but he'll hit the bench for a second straight matchup with a lefty (Joey Cantillo). Though Carlos Correa looks poised to serve as the Twins' primary shortstop down the stretch following his recent activation from the injured list, Lee could factor into the mix for playing time at second base, where Minnesota has been rotating three players (Lee, Edouard Julien and Kyle Farmer) of late. Super-utility man Willi Castro is typically picking up starts out of the outfield but could settle in as the primary option at the keystone once outfielder Max Kepler (knee) returns from the injured list.

Lee (shoulder) has started swinging a bat from the right side, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. The 23-year-old and could begin throwing this weekend, and then swinging from the left side Monday. • Twins' Brooks Lee: Gets cortisone shot

An MRI on Lee's sore shoulder showed no structural damage, but he received a cortisone shot for his right biceps tendinitis, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Lee will wait for the cortisone shot to take effect before resuming throwing. It sounds like Lee, who was placed on the injured list Aug. 9, could miss several weeks.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Lands on IL with biceps tendinitis

The Twins placed Lee on the 10-day injured list Friday with right biceps tendinitis, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Lee recently missed some time with what had been referred to as right shoulder soreness, but there's now a different diagnosis and it's an injury bad enough to sideline him at least for the next 10 days. The rookie had seen most of his playing time of late at shortstop while Carlos Correa (heel) was out, but that job now should go to Willi Castro, with Austin Martin and Kyle Farmer mixing in at second base.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Could be headed to injured list

Lee (undisclosed) has been scratched from the lineup for the first game of Friday's doubleheader versus the Guardians and could be headed to the 10-day injured list, Declan Goff of SKOR North reports. It's unclear what injury Lee is dealing with, but he is no longer listed on the Twins' lineup card as a starter or reserve, so a stint on the IL looks imminent. The Twins should have more information on his status shortly.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Dealing with shoulder soreness

Lee is dealing with right shoulder soreness, leading to his absence from the lineup for a second straight day Monday against the Cubs, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Lee was on the bench for Sunday's series finale with the White Sox and he'll sit Monday as well, which is now understood to be the result of some lingering shoulder soreness. On the bright side, manager Rocco Baldelli said Monday that Lee could have started the series opener versus the Cubs, so he'll likely be back in action soon.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Playing second base

Lee is batting eighth and playing second base Friday against San Francisco. Lee has played third base in all eight of his big-league starts due to Royce Lewis (groin) being on the IL. However, Lee will get his first look at second base Friday, the position he's likely to transition to long-term once Lewis is activated. The 23-year-old Lee has a .947 OPS with a pair of home runs in 35 plate appearances.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Hits first career homer in win

Lee went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Saturday's 9-3 win over the Astros. Lee took Hunter Brown deep in the third inning for his first career major-league home run. The 23-year-old has hit the ground running with the Twins, going 7-for-15 with a home run and six RBI over his first four games. While it's unclear exactly how much time Royce Lewis (groin) will miss, the rookie has made the most of his time in the big leagues so far.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Dealing with herniated disc in back

Lee has been diagnosed with a herniated disc in his back and is three weeks into a two-month rehab plan, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. Lee initially went on the 7-day injured list at Triple-A St. Paul with what was described at the time as back spasms, but subsequent testing revealed a more serious injury. There is optimism that he'll be available to play later this season, but no timetable for his return to game action has been established. Lee had seemed like a pretty good bet to make his major-league debut in 2024, but that would appear to be very much in question now.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Out 3-4 weeks with back injury

Saints manager Toby Gardenhire said Thursday that Lee will not join Triple-A St. Paul for 3-to-4 weeks as he gets treatment for back spasms, Patrick Borzi of MinnPost.com reports. The 2022 first-round pick looked good this spring with a .963 OPS but suffered a back injury last week. It sounds like he won't be an option to be called up to the majors should a need arise until at least late April or early May.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Sent to minor-league camp

The Twins reassigned Lee (back) to minor-league camp Friday. The 2022 first-round pick looked good this spring with a .963 OPS, but he was never going to make the Opening Day roster. Lee will head to Triple-A St. Paul, and a 2024 big-league debut is still very likely.

Lee was removed from Thursday's Grapefruit League game versus the Nationals due to a lower-back spasm, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. • Twins' Brooks Lee: Promoted to Triple-A

Lee was promoted Thursday to Triple-A St. Paul. The top-ranking prospect in the Twins' minor-league system, Lee earned the level jump after slashing .292/.365/.476 with 11 home runs, 31 doubles, 61 RBI, six stolen bases and 63 runs scored in 87 games this summer at Double-A Wichita. The fast-rising 22-year-old shortstop was the eighth overall selection in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Cal Poly.

  • Twins' Brooks Lee: Can't hold hot start at Double-A

Lee is hitting .269 with four home runs and a .772 OPS at Double-A Wichita. Lee began the season hot by hitting .323 with a .894 OPS through his first 23 games but has cooled by hitting .200 with a .617 OPS in his last 24 games. There's still plenty to like about his performance with good walk rates (10.3 percent) and strikeout rates (16.2 percent), but he hasn't been overly impressive. The 2022 first-round draft pick may need to add more power (four home runs, .429 slugging percentage) to become an elite prospect.
