  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Starting on mound Monday

Ohtani (elbow) will operate as the Dodgers' starting pitcher for Monday's contest against the Padres. Ohtani will officially make his return to the major-league mound, operating as an opener in Monday's series opener against the Padres. Ohtani was originally expected to throw another live bullpen session early this week, but that plan has now been scratched for a far more positive development. The right-hander was going to shoot for 50 to 55 pitches in his live BP session, which is likely the general number of pitches he'll be capped at in his return to the bump Monday. Ohtani will increase his workload by outing, but he may not pitch deep enough in his season debut to qualify for a win, if it presents itself.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Set for pitching debut this week

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Sunday's 5-4 win over the Giants that it's a "high possibility" that Ohtani (elbow) makes his Dodgers debut as a pitcher during the team's upcoming four-game series against the Padres that begins Monday, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports. Ohtani served as the Dodgers' designated hitter Sunday and went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs. Earlier Sunday, Roberts told Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register that Ohtani would throw another live batting practice session this week before potentially pitching in a game, but the skipper has apparently seen enough from the 30-year-old to turn him loose. Ohtani's last appearance as a pitcher came in August 2023 with the Angels before he underwent Tommy John surgery a month later, but he's finally ready to be a two-way player again. Considering that Ohtani built up to 44 pitches in his most recent live BP outing, he won't be stretched out enough to serve as a traditional starter, so he's expected to operate as more of an opener Monday. Ohtani is likely to get gradually stretched out over a series of appearances before he would be able to handle a five-inning workload.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Closing in on pitching debut

Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that Ohtani (elbow) will throw another live batting practice session early this week, which may "potentially" be the right-hander's final live throwing session before he makes his Dodgers debut as a pitcher, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Ohtani -- who remains in the lineup at designated hitter and as the Dodgers' leadoff batter in Sunday's game against the Giants -- built up to 44 pitches and three innings in his most recent live BP outing Tuesday, per MLB.com reports. He'll likely be targeting around 50 or 55 pitches in his upcoming throwing session, and if all goes well, Ohtani may finally be given the green light to operate as a two-way player for the first time since Aug. 23, 2023, when he made his last appearance as a pitcher for the Angels before undergoing his second career Tommy John surgery just under a month later. Because Ohtani won't be fully stretched out for a traditional starter's workload by the time he's cleared to make his debut on the mound, Roberts said that the 30-year-old will initially be used as a multi-inning opener in bullpen games and will gradually build up his pitch counts.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Hits 25-homer mark with two blasts

Ohtani went 2-for-3 with two solo home runs, two walks and three total runs scored in Saturday's 11-5 win over the Giants. Ohtani was off to a bit of a quiet start in June, going just 11-for-48 (.229) with four extra-base hits and a 4:14 BB:K over his first 12 games of the month. He got things back on track with a big performance Saturday, which included a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first inning as well as a second solo shot in the sixth. Ohtani leads the National League with 25 homers and is one behind Aaron Judge and Cal Raleigh for the major-league lead. Ohtani has added a .290/.385/.638 slash line, 41 RBI, 71 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, 11 doubles and five triples across 69 contests.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Fine after HBP, live BP postponed

Ohtani (foot/elbow) is expected to be fine after being hit by a pitch in Sunday's 7-3 win over the Cardinals, but the team will postpone his upcoming live BP session until Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Ohtani was struck in the left foot by an 86.7 mph sweeper from reliever Matt Svanson in the top of the eighth inning, ultimately remaining in the game. The 30-year-old was set to face live hitters Monday as he continues to work his way back to the mound in 2025, but that session will now be pushed back another day. Ohtani's foot doesn't seem to be an issue, so he can be considered a full go ahead of Monday's series opener with the Padres in San Diego.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Next sim game moved to Monday

Ohtani (elbow) will next throw to live hitters Monday in San Diego, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Ohtani was on schedule to throw to hitters this weekend in St. Louis, but with rain in the forecast and day games both Saturday and Sunday, the Dodgers are opting to push the session back a few days in order to take advantage of better weather and timing. In Ohtani's previous sim game, he threw 29 pitches and topped out at 97 mph with his fastball while deploying his full arsenal. Ohtani is loosely slated to throw to hitters each weekend, and it's unclear how moving this session to Monday will impact his throwing schedule moving forward.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Homers in loss Monday

Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a home run and a sacrifice fly Monday in an extra-inning loss to the Mets. The Dodgers were held scoreless through six frames before Ohtani launched a solo shot to right field in the seventh. The star slugger added a sacrifice fly in the ninth off Mets closer Edwin Diaz to send the game to an extra frame. Ohtani has recently ramped up his preparation as a pitcher as he gets closer to making his Dodgers debut on the mound, but that work hasn't impacted his hitting -- he's belted six long balls among his eight total hits over his past eight games.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Goes 29 pitches in latest sim game

Ohtani (elbow) threw 29 pitches in a two-inning live batting practice session Saturday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. The live BP session was the second in just under a week for Ohtani, who previously threw 22 pitches of live BP on May 25 in what was his first time facing hitters since undergoing his second career Tommy John surgery in September 2023. According to manager Dave Roberts, Ohtani's fastball sat between 94 and 95 miles per hour and topped out at 97 mph during the workout, and the right-hander made use of his full arsenal. The Dodgers are tentatively planning on having Ohtani throw one live BP session every weekend while steadily increasing his workloads, and once he reaches the point that he's covering about five simulated innings of 75 pitches, he should get the green light to make his first appearance as a pitcher since Aug. 23, 2023. In the meantime, Ohtani will continue to serve as the Dodgers' everyday designated hitter. He finished the Dodgers' weekend series against the Yankees with four hits -- including two solo home runs -- over his 13 at-bats.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Blasts two homers in win

Ohtani went 2-for-5 with two solo home runs in Friday's 8-5 win over the Yankees. Ohtani's first-inning blast answered Aaron Judge's homer. In the sixth, Ohtani went yard again to spark a four-run inning. The 30-year-old superstar matched Cal Raleigh's power production Friday to stay atop the major-league leaderboard with 22 homers. Ohtani has added a spectacular .294/.394/.670 slash line with 37 RBI, 61 runs scored, 11 stolen bases, nine doubles and four triples across 55 contests. He had gone nine games without a multi-hit effort entering Friday, but Ohtani still came through with four homers in that stretch.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: First to 20 home runs

Ohtani went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, two walks and two runs scored in Tuesday's victory against the Guardians. Ohtani became the first player to reach the 20-homer mark this season with his two-run blast in the fourth inning. He's gone deep in three straight games and has 14 home runs over his last 26 contests. The superstar slugger now boasts a terrific .296/.396/.657 slash line with 33 extra-base hits and 59 runs scored.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Leads off game with homer again

Ohtani went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, two walks and three total runs in Monday's 7-2 win against the Guardians. Ohtani belted a leadoff homer for the second straight contest, this time swatting a 378-foot shot on Gavin Williams' first pitch of the game. The two-way star leads the majors in both total home runs (19) and leadoff long balls (five) this season. With 11 thefts to his name as well, Ohtani is currently the only hitter in the majors with at least 15 homers and at least 10 steals.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Leads off Sunday's loss with homer

Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a solo home run Sunday in a 3-1 loss to the Mets. Highlighting why Ohtani is the most unique player in baseball, the two-way star threw a 22-pitch live batting practice session -- marking his first time facing live hitters since undergoing Tommy John surgery in September 2023 -- before Sunday's game and then led off the contest with a 411-foot solo blast on Kodai Senga's second pitch. While excitement is starting to build about Ohtani's eventual return to the mound, he continues to rank as one of the league's most feared hitters, tying for the MLB lead with 18 home runs while posting a 1.026 OPS. According to Ronald Blum of the Associated Press, manager Dave Roberts said that Ohtani likely won't make his debut as a pitcher until after the All-Star break, but in the meantime, the 30-year-old should continue to provide plenty of value for fantasy managers with his production at the plate.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Faces hitters for first time

Ohtani threw a 22-pitch live batting practice session Sunday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. Facing live hitters for the first time since undergoing his second career Tommy John surgery Sept. 19, 2023, Ohtani reached a major milestone Sunday in what's been a slow ramp-up process with his throwing program. While taking the mound for five total at-bats against teammates Hyeseong Kim and Dalton Rushing as well as a member of the Dodgers coaching staff, Ohtani recorded a pair of strikeouts and a groundout and gave up a walk and a double. Per Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register, Dodgers pitching coach Mark Prior said that Ohtani was throwing "free and easy" and sported a fastball that sat around 94 to 95 miles per hour during Sunday's workout while also mixing in a couple of sweepers as well as a splitter. Ohtani will likely continue to ramp up the intensity and volume of his live sessions over the next few weeks before the team pinpoints a target date for his debut as a pitcher. In the meantime, his preparations as a pitcher aren't expected to prevent him from serving as the Dodgers' everyday designated hitter; Ohtani will be in the lineup in the leadoff spot for Sunday's series finale versus the Mets.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Live bullpen pushed back to Sunday

The bullpen session against live hitters that Ohtani (elbow) was originally scheduled to throw pregame Saturday will instead take place Sunday, Jorge Castillo of ESPN.com reports. The mound session will be a major step in Ohtani's journey to return to game action as a pitcher, as it will mark the first time he has faced hitters since he underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2023. Per Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times, the reason for the session moving from Saturday to Sunday is the late ending of Friday's game against the Mets, which included a 98-minute rain delay and went 13 innings, finishing just before 1:00 am ET. Ohtani went 1-for-5 with a walk and a run in the Dodgers' victory.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Set to face hitters Saturday

Ohtani (elbow) will face hitters in a bullpen session Saturday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. Ohtani also threw some breaking pitches in his lighter mid-week bullpen session Wednesday, Chen added. It's all a major step in his rehab from elbow surgery, and facing hitters this weekend might be the biggest step of them all to this point. The Dodgers don't anticipate Ohtani going out on a rehab assignment due to his role as a hitter and will instead build him up through simulated games. Ohtani's mound debut with the Dodgers remains to be determined.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Retakes MLB homer lead

Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Monday. Ohtani hit the first of back-to-back solo homers with Mookie Betts in the sixth inning, going 389 feet to left field. The long ball was Ohtani's 17th of the campaign, pushing him back ahead of Kyle Schwarber -- who went deep earlier in the day -- for the MLB lead. Ohtani is in the midst of a big month of May, slashing .352/.427/.859 with 10 home runs, 21 RBI, 19 runs and a stolen base through 17 games this month.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Completes another bullpen session

Ohtani (elbow) threw an up-down bullpen session Saturday that totaled 50 pitches, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports. Ohtani split his work evenly between two simulated innings, with this session marking the most pitches he's thrown as he continues to work his way back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander hasn't yet progressed to throwing breaking pitches, but he could begin to face hitters soon. Offensively, the two-way star continues to provide one of the most productive bats in the sport with a .305/.404/.667 slash line, 16 homers and 10 steals through 44 games.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Takes major-league lead in homers

Ohtani went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Friday's 6-2 loss to the Angels. Ohtani has four homers and eight RBI over his last three games. That power surge, part of a larger binge of nine long balls and 19 RBI across 14 games in May, has helped him take over the major-league lead in homers at 16. He's added a .316 batting average, 1.106 OPS, 29 RBI, 49 runs scored and 10 stolen bases over 43 contests. Simply put, Ohtani continues to make the remarkable look routine.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Adds up-down to bullpen session

Ohtani (elbow) threw an up-down bullpen session Saturday in Arizona, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports. This was the first time Ohtani has done an up-down -- meaning he simulated a break between innings -- as he continues this pitching progression. Aside from the added wrinkle, the session was similar to recent bullpens the two-way star has thrown, as he tossed around 35 pitches consisting of four-seamers, two-seamers and splitters. Ohtani has yet to deploy his full pitch mix or throw to live hitters, however, so he's probably still at least a couple months away from returning to game action. The Dodgers plan to have him build up through simulated games since his role as a designated hitter precludes him from going on a minor-league rehab pitching assignment.

  • Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani: Completes late comeback

Ohtani went 3-for-6 with a three-home run, two doubles, an additional RBI and two total runs scored in Friday's 14-11 win over the Diamondbacks. Ohtani had an RBI double in the second inning, but he saved the fireworks for the ninth. He punctuated the Dodgers' six-run rally in the ninth with his homer, putting them ahead again after they previously blew a five-run lead. Ohtani is on one of his power binges again -- during his seven-game hitting streak, he has gone 12-for-29 (.414) with five homers, four doubles and a triple, as well as 10 RBI and 11 runs scored. His batting average (.304) is above .300 for the first time since April 9, and he's added a 1.063 OPS, 12 homers, 20 RBI, 43 runs, 10 steals, eight doubles and four triples over 37 contests. Another 50-50 campaign is likely asking too much, but Ohtani still has 40-40 potential at his current pace.
