Pirates' Jose Hernandez: Returns to action Friday
Hernandez (calf) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday. He allowed three runs on two hits and a walk over two-thirds of an inning during Friday's loss to the Angels.
Yohan Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room for the left-hander on the 26-man roster. Hernandez missed just over a month with a right calf strain, and he allowed home runs to Zach Neto and Taylor Ward to account for the three runs. He also recorded three strikeouts -- a wild pitch allowed Shohei Ohtani to reach base. Hernandez (calf) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Indianapolis, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports.
Hernandez should be able to return to the Pirates' bullpen by the weekend, after making maybe one or two appearances on the farm. Hernandez appears on track to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible next week. The Pirates placed Hernandez on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a right calf strain, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Hernandez was a Rule 5 draft selection by the Pirates over the winter, and the left-hander has more than held his own with a 2.63 ERA and 1.02 WHIP over 26 appearances and 27.1 innings with the club.
