Rodriguez was spotted in the Brewers' clubhouse prior to Thursday's game against the Reds and could be recalled from Triple-A Nashville, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
The team has made no official transaction with Rodriguez. However, it doesn't have a probable pitcher listed for Friday's game versus the Reds and Rodriguez would be a candidate to either start that game or be available in long relief. Rodriguez yielded one unearned run with a 7:1 K:BB over five innings in his first start of the season with Nashville and would be on six days' rest Friday.

Rodriguez was thrust into the Brewers' big-league rotation following a plethora of injuries to their starting pitchers, but he'll now return to the minors after posting a 7.30 ERA and 1.78 WHIP across 12.1 innings to begin his MLB career. It's unclear who will fill the open spot in Milwaukee's rotation following Rodriguez's departure, but it's possible the Brewers turn to the newly acquired Dallas Keuchel until they get a few pitchers back from the injured list. For now, Joel Kuhnel will come up from Triple-A Nashville to add bullpen depth.

Rodriguez allowed just two singles through the first three innings before getting tagged for four runs on two homers in the fourth. The 22-year-old righty will get another turn through the rotation despite underwhelming in his MLB debut versus Toronto this past Tuesday, when he struck out four over 3.2 innings while giving up two runs on seven hits and one walk. Rodriguez showed the ability to make bats miss at every stop of the minors, but control remains a concern for the youngster. Even though he issued just one walk in his debut, he wasn't particularly efficient, as he needed 71 pitches to record 10 outs and threw just 43 strikes. Rodriguez would bolster his case for sticking around with the big club if he pitches well Monday, but Jakob Junis' (shoulder) impending return from the 60-day injured list might make Rodriguez expendable if he struggles against the Angels.

The club hinted late last week at a potential promotion for Rodriguez, and skipper Pat Murphy confirmed Monday night that the 22-year-old will indeed make his MLB debut Tuesday. Rodriguez has a 2.68 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 47:11 K:BB in 40.1 innings over his last seven starts after a rough start to the Triple-A season. With news surfacing Monday that southpaw Robert Gasser is weighing UCL surgery, Milwaukee is yet again in need of starting pitching, so it wouldn't be a shock to see Rodriguez get multiple opportunities as a starter in the big leagues this season.

With Biloxi's season coming to an end over the weekend, Rodriguez will be rewarded with a brief taste of the Triple-A level to close out what has been a brilliant 2023 campaign for the 21-year-old right-hander. Per Sam Dykstra of MiLB.com, among all qualified pitchers at the Double-A level this season, Rodriguez ranked first in ERA (2.77) and batting average against (.183), second in WHIP (1.10) and fourth in strikeouts (152) over his 123.2 innings.

Rodriguez has a 3.02 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 83:31 K:BB in 62.2 innings through 13 starts for Double-A Biloxi.
Rodriguez has not been overly consistent this season, as he has two starts with four walks and another five starts with three walks, but he also has four outings with nine-plus strikeouts. As long as he limits the free passes, hitters have a hard time doing damage against the Nicaraguan righty (.188 AVG against, 0.72 HR/9). Rodriguez has been trending up over the past year and also had a strong showing in the World Baseball Classic this spring.
