  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Allows one run over six frames

Medina did not factor into the decision Thursday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings against the Twins. He struck out four. Medina was efficient for most of the contest and didn't allow a run until the sixth inning, which would come across on a double-play ball after the right-hander gave up two hits to open the frame. It was the first time since July 7 that he went at least six innings, though he was still unable to secure his fourth win due to a lack of run support. On the downside, Medina issued at least three walks in four of his final five starts of the year. The 24-year-old figures be in the mix for a rotation spot in 2024 despite posting a 5.42 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 106:57 K:BB through 109.2 innings in his rookie season.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Tagged with 10th loss

Medina (3-10) took the loss against Detroit on Thursday, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out five batters over five innings. Medina gave up a pair of runs in the first frame but settled down with three scoreless innings thereafter. However, he was bitten by the Tigers again in the fifth, surrendering three runs -- the last of which came home on a balk. Medina did show some positive signs with 15 swinging strikes and just one walk, but he's had a rough time in September, posting a 6.62 ERA and 1.58 WHIP across 17.2 innings over four starts.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Tagged for five runs

Medina (3-9) allowed five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three over 4.1 innings to take the loss versus the Rangers on Sunday. Medina worked his pitch count up to 84 (52 strikes) in this outing, up from 70 in his return from a finger injury Monday. The right-hander gave up three runs in the first inning and another two in the fifth. Medina has gone without a win in his last seven outings, but he's taken only two losses in that span. He's now at a 5.68 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 90:49 K:BB through 95 innings over 20 appearances (15 starts) this season. Medina is projected for a home start versus the Padres in his next outing.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Goes 4.2 innings in no-decision

Medina (finger) didn't factor into the decision in the Athletics' 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays on Monday, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out three. Medina held Toronto off the board through his first four frames before he was tagged for three runs in the fifth, forcing him out of the game after throwing 70 pitches. The rookie right-hander was likely on a pitch count Monday, as he was making his first start since Aug. 18 in his return from the 15-day injured list. He's now failed to make it through five innings in each of his last four starts, allowing 10 earned runs in that span (15 innings). Overall, Medina sits on a 3-8 season record with a 5.46 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and 87:46 K:BB across 14 starts (90.2 innings). He'll look to go deeper in his next outing, tentatively scheduled for this weekend in Texas.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Making rehab apperance Wednesday

Medina (finger) completed a bullpen session Sunday and is set to make a rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Medina made it through a side session without any setbacks, paving the way for him to head to Las Vegas for what should be a brief rehab assignment. The right-hander landed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 21 due to a blister on his right index finger.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Full bullpen session on tap

Medina (finger) came away from Friday's touch-and-feel bullpen session without any setbacks and is therefore set for a full session early in the week, the Athletics' official site reports. The right-hander was able to throw without a bandage on his blister-affected finger Friday, so he'll take the next step early in the week. If that goes similarly well, Medina may need to throw only another bullpen or a live batting practice before being activated when first eligible next Sunday.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Set for bullpen session

Medina (finger) will throw a bullpen session with Triple-A Las Vegas on Friday, Joey Pollizze of MLB.com reports. Medina landed on the injured list Monday due to a blister on his right index finger. He'll be sidelined until early September at a minimum as a result, but it sounds as if he could need just one rehab outing before being activated if his finger responds well to resumed throwing.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Hits IL with blister

The Athletics placed Medina on the 15-day injured list Monday due to a blister on his right index finger. Medina presumably picked up the injury during his most recent start versus the Orioles on Friday, when he lasted just three innings while giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits. Reliever Spencer Patton was brought up from Triple-A Las Vegas to take Medina's place on the roster. Medina's placement on the IL is retroactive to Saturday, so he won't be eligible for activation until Sept. 3.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Goes three innings Friday

Medina allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out one and walking none over three innings as a bulk reliever Friday versus the Orioles. Medina's gone fewer than five innings in each of his last three outings, with the prior two appearances being traditional starts, and it appears the Athletics may be slowing him down as he approaches a career-high workload. He's already covered 99.1 innings between the majors and Triple-A this season, while his career high is 106.1 innings in 2021. Medina's also had a couple of rough performances lately, which has put him at a 5.44 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 84:43 K:BB over 18 appearances (13 starts). The right-hander tentatively lines him up for a home outing against the Royals next week.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Solid in no-decision

Medina did not factor into the decision Saturday, allowing one run on four hits and two walks over four innings against the Nationals. He struck out four. Though Medina was pulled prior to the fifth inning for a second consecutive start, he turned in a strong outing and walked only two batters after handing out five free passes his last time out. The 24-year-old has quietly put together a handful of solid performances, tallying a 3.62 ERA and a 25:11 K:BB over his last five appearances (19.1 innings). Medina's tentatively lined up to face the Orioles for his next start.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Walks five batters

Medina allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits and five walks over 3.1 innings in Sunday's win over the Giants. He struck out three and did not factor in the decision. Medina never found a groove Sunday as he allowed a run in each of the first two frames followed by two more in the third inning. He gave up just three total earned runs in his previous three starts and turned in his shortest outing since June 3. Medina has a solid 3.55 ERA since the start of July but his season mark jumped to 5.47. His next outing is lined up to be in Washington.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Takes hard-luck loss

Medina (3-8) allowed two runs on six hits and struck out six without walking a batter over 5.1 innings, but he took the loss Sunday versus the Rockies. Medina threw 60 of 91 pitches for strikes and did well to keep the ball in play. Ryan McMahon was his main nemesis, as the Colorado infielder had a pair of run-scoring knocks in the contest. Medina has allowed a total of three runs over 16 innings across three starts since the All-Star break, but he has just one win to show for it. He's at a 5.35 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 76:36 K:BB through 15 appearances (11 starts) this season. Medina is projected to make his next start at home versus the Giants.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Picks up win

Medina (3-7) allowed three hits and a walk while striking out six over 5.2 shutout innings to earn the win Tuesday over the Red Sox. Medina came up one out short of a quality start. He made his last appearance as a bulk reliever July 7 versus Boston, but he was better in his return to a starting role. Through 13 appearances (nine starts), Medina has a 5.79 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 64:33 K:BB over 65.1 innings this season. The right-hander is lined up for a challenging home start versus the Astros over the weekend.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Fans nine in bulk relief

Medina allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings in Friday's loss to Boston. He struck out nine and did not factor in the decision. Medina entered the game in the second inning after opener Sam Long loaded the bases with no outs. All three runners would cross home plate with Medina on the mound, followed by four more over the next six frames. He did strike out a career-high nine batters though, while also issuing just one walk after dishing out 12 free passes over his previous 10 innings. Medina now owns a 6.34 ERA with a 58:32 K:BB through 59.2 frames this season.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Struggles with control

Medina (1-7) took the loss Sunday, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits and seven walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four. Medina took his seventh loss of the campaign, tied for the eighth-most in baseball, and dished out a season-high seven walks over five frames. Medina's lack of control got him in trouble time and time again, as three of the four runs against him came from runners he issued a walk to, while he also let a run score off a wild pitch. Through 10 appearances (48.2 innings), Medina has stumbled to a 6.84 ERA and a 45:26 K:BB while serving up 2.0 HR/9. He's tentatively scheduled to make another start next weekend at home versus the White Sox.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Tosses 4.1 innings in bulk relief

Medina allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out four over 4.1 innings in Tuesday's 3-2 loss against the Guardians. Medina took over for opener Ken Waldichuk with two outs in the second inning and managed to hold the Guardians scoreless until the seventh, where he allowed a leadoff double to Myles Straw, who would come around to score after Medina's departure. His one run allowed was a season low for the 24-year-old, who has given up four or more runs in three of his last five appearances. Medina hasn't lasted more than six innings in any appearance, and he hasn't even gone five frames in three of his last four. Through nine appearances (six starts), Medina owns a 7.01 ERA and a 41:19 K:BB with 10 homers allowed in 43.2 innings.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Pitching behind opener Tuesday

Medina will serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Ken Waldichuk in Tuesday's game against the Guardians, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Since he had previously been serving as a starter before transitioning to a bullpen role about a month ago, Waldichuk could be capable of covering somewhere around 1-to-3 innings before turning the game over to Medina. While pitching out of the bullpen likely puts a cap on Medina's potential innings count, it should enhance his chances of factoring into the decision. Over his last five outings, Medina has gone 1-4 with an 8.06 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 22.1 innings.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Earns first MLB win

Medina (1-5) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks over five innings Friday, striking out six and earning a win over the Brewers. Coming on after opener Sam Moll's scoreless first inning, Medina allowed two runs in the second followed by four shutout frames. The two runs were the fewest given up by Medina in any outing this season. He now holds a 7.53 ERA and 32:17 K:BB through 34.2 frames. The 24-year-old righty is currently lined up to face the Rays at home next week, though it's unclear how the team will deploy him.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Slated for bulk-relief role

Medina is set to work as a bulk reliever Friday versus the Brewers, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports. Sam Moll will take the mound first as an opener to kick off the Athletics' three-game weekend series in Milwaukee. Medina enters Friday's game with a 0-5 record to go with an 8.19 ERA through 29.2 innings (five starts, one relief appearance) this season.

  • Athletics' Luis Medina: Hit around by Marlins

Medina (0-5) took the loss Saturday, allowing six runs on six hits and four walks over two innings against the Marlins. He struck out two. Medina struggled mightily Saturday, setting a season high in walks while lasting just two innings. However, he didn't allow a home run after giving up 10 across his first five appearances. The rookie has been awful to start the season and owns an 8.19 ERA and 26:14 K:BB through 29.2 innings. Considering his inability to limit power and walks and the Athletics' lack of run support, Medina remains firmly out of fantasy consideration, though he could continue to receive starts given Oakland's lack of quality arms.
