  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Shifted to 60-day injured list

The Reds transferred Spiers (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Friday. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Garrett Hampson. Spiers recently began a throwing program as he comes back from a right shoulder impingement, but he now will not be eligible for activation until late June.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Begins throwing Saturday

Reds manager Terry Francona said that Spiers (shoulder) began a throwing progression Saturday at the team's spring training facility in Arizona, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports. Spiers will likely remain in Arizona for at least the next couple of weeks to continue ramping up before the Reds map out a minor-league rehab assignment for him. The 27-year-old righty had started in two of his three appearances for Cincinnati before landing on the shelf April 20 with a right shoulder impingement, but he might have to settle for a long-relief role once he's activated.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Out with shoulder impingement

The Reds placed Spiers on the 15-day injured list Sunday due to a right shoulder impingement, Charlie Goldsmith of the Dayton Daily News reports. The 27-year-old was called up Friday and was scheduled to start Sunday in place of Nick Lodolo (paternity), but Hunter Greene's short outing Saturday resulted in Spiers covering four frames out of the bullpen. The right-hander apparently tweaked his shoulder while giving up four runs, so he'll be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks. Randy Wynne was selected to the MLB roster Sunday and could provide some length behind opener Brent Suter against the Orioles.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Sent down to Triple-A

The Reds optioned Spiers to Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday. Spiers had a solid start to begin his season, allowing one earned run over six innings of work April 1. However, he allowed four earned across 3.1 innings in his following start Sunday. The 27-year-old will return to Triple-A Louisville, where he posted a 2.51 ERA across 46.2 innings in 2024. With Spiers' demotion and Matt McLain (hamstring) landing on the injured list, Will Benson and Noelvi Marte were both recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Ineffective versus Brewers

Spiers (0-2) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three batters on his way to a loss in Sunday's 8-2 defeat to the Brewers. Spiers was able to pitch two scoreless frames before running into trouble in the third inning. He surrendered three hits and two runs in the frame before the wheels fell completely off in the fourth. After giving up back-to-back singles to open the inning, Spiers was pulled from the game, and both of the runners later came around to score. The right-hander has now given up five runs over 9.1 innings in two starts this season, and with Andrew Abbott (shoulder) eligible to return to the rotation Saturday, it's unclear if Spiers will make another start or transition into being a bullpen arm.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Opening season in rotation

Spiers will open the season as the Reds' fifth starter, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. It could be temporary until Andrew Abbott (shoulder) is ready, but Spiers will have at least a couple starts to convince the Reds he should remain in the rotation. The right-hander has had a strong showing this spring, collecting a 2.70 ERA and 10:4 K:BB across 10 frames.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Throws three innings Sunday

Spiers allowed one run on two hits and one walk while striking out three over three innings in Sunday's spring start against the Cubs. Spiers, making his second Cactus League start, became the first Cincinnati starter to reach three innings. The right-hander threw 37 pitches (26 strikes) and told Mark Sheldon of MLB.com following the game that he got another up-and-down in the bullpen to get "more pitches under my belt." He entered camp as a depth starter, likely destined for Triple-A Louisville, but injuries to Andrew Abbott (shoulder) and Rhett Lowder (elbow) could factor into where Spiers lands to open the regular season.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Drawing start Tuesday

Spiers will start Tuesday's game in Cleveland. Spiers is taking the rotation spot created by Julian Aguiar's (shoulder) placement on the injured list. Jakob Junis, had initially been scheduled to start Tuesday, but he'll instead be pushed back to Wednesday while he tends to a personal matter. The right-handed Spiers holds a 5.40 ERA over 21 appearances (nine starts) for the Reds this season.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Expected to move into rotation

Spiers is likely to enter the Reds' rotation in place of the injured Julian Aguiar (shoulder), Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Aguiar had been slated to make his final start of the season Wednesday in Cleveland, but that assignment should fall to Spiers, who will be on seven days' rest after throwing 46 pitches over three relief innings last week against Atlanta. It will be Spiers' first start since Aug. 20, when he allowed 10 runs (nine earned) across 4.1 frames in Toronto.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Works out of bullpen again

Spiers tossed two innings of relief and gave up three earned runs on three hits and no walks while striking out three Friday in the Reds' 14-0 loss to the Brewers in the second game of a doubleheader. Even though injuries have tested the Reds' starting depth of late, manager David Bell has seemingly pulled the plug on Spiers as a member of the rotation. Spiers has made three of his last four appearances out of the bullpen, and his outing came behind a traditional starter (Rhett Lowder) rather than an opener. The right-hander looks poised to operate as a multi-inning reliever moving forward, with most of his usage likely to come in lower-leverage spots.

  • Reds' Carson Spiers: Four scoreless innings Sunday

Spiers threw four scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates, allowing three hits without a walk. He struck out one batter. Nick Martinez started the game but only went three innings before handing the ball off to Spiers, who bounced back with a scoreless outing after a brutal stretch in which he gave up 19 earned runs in 12 innings. The Martinez-Spiers tandem was effective, but both pitchers may be needed for starts this week with the Reds playing seven games in six days, including a doubleheader Friday against the Brewers. Cincinnati will have to make do with a patchwork rotation with Andrew Abbott (shoulder) now on the injured list alongside Hunter Greene (elbow) and others.

Spiers (4-5) took the loss Tuesday against the Blue Jays, allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three. It was a night to forget for the right-hander -- Spiers gave up five homers in the lopsided defeat, including two in each of the second and third innings. The 26-year-old Spiers has given up 19 earned runs in just 12 innings over his last three appearances. His ERA is up to 5.43 on the year with a 1.42 WHIP and 64:17 K:BB across 68.2 innings. He's currently in line to face the Pirates on the road this weekend, though the Reds could elect to move Spiers back to a bullpen role.

Pagan isn't expected to work more than an inning before turning the game over to Spiers.

Over than span, he's gone 2-3 with a 6.39 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 28:8 K:BB across 25.1 innings. Spiers (4-2) earned the win Monday over the Cubs, allowing one hit and two walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out four. Spiers was sharp in his first start since July 12 due to a shoulder injury. The rookie gave up a hit to the fourth batter he saw and then pitched the next four innings, only allowing a single walk. He was pulled after 68 pitches due to a likely pitch count in his first outing coming off the injured list. The 26-year-old has a 3.46 ERA and 1.19 WHIP over 52 innings this season, he's slated to face the Giants next in a two-start week.

Spiers' ERA now sits at 3.83 with a 1.26 WHIP and 41:9 K:BB across 47 innings this season. • Reds' Carson Spiers: Goes six innings in loss

Spiers (0-1) took the loss Monday versus the Pirates after he gave up four runs on seven hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out five. Spiers gave up five hits and all four runs in the first two innings before settling in nicely. The 26-year-old had impressed as a multi-inning reliever, leading to the opportunity in the rotation. There is no word yet on whether he will get another turn through the rotation, but the 3.20 ERA through 25.1 innings this season should keep him in the conversation.
