  • Royals' John Schreiber: Picks up save in return

Schreiber earned the save in Monday's 5-3 victory over the Angels, working around a hit to pitch a shutout inning with no strikeouts. The 30-year-old reliever saw immediate action in his first game back from a knee injury, collecting a save for the first time since May 10, which oddly, also came against the Angels. However, Schreiber likely will only serve as a backup closer going forward, as he spelled Lucas Erceg, who collected the two previous Kansas City saves, after Erceg fired 28 pitches in Sunday's contest. Overall, Schreiber now sports a 4.03 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 30:13 K:BB across 38 innings this season.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Back from IL

The Royals activated Schreiber (knee) from the 15-day injured list Monday. Schreiber will rejoin the Royals bullpen after a three-week stay on the injured list due to right knee soreness. The 30-year-old has a 4.14 ERA and a 30:13 K:BB across 37 innings for the Royals this season. Carlos Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Slated for rehab assignment

Manager Matt Quatraro said Monday that he expects Schreiber (knee) to begin his rehab assignment Wednesday, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Schreiber landed on the 15-day IL on July 29 due to a right knee patella tendon injury. He threw his second bullpen session Sunday, and the 30-year-old right-hander is ready to embark on a rehab assignment to prepare himself for a return to the big club. Across 43 major-league outings this season, Schreiber has registered one save and 20 holds with a 4.14 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 37 innings.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Sheds brace

Schreiber (knee) threw Monday for the first time without wearing a brace, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Schreiber was placed on the 15-day injured list July 29 with a right knee patella tendon injury, and Monday's update was the first since he hit the IL. While he's been progressing well, a return from the injured list doesn't seem imminent considering he hasn't started mound work.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Placed on 15-day IL

The Royals placed Schreiber on the 15-day injured list Monday with a right knee patella tendon injury. Schreiber suffered the injury during a relief appearance Sunday against the Cubs. The Royals haven't provided a timeline for Schreiber's return from the IL, but he'll be out of commission for at least two weeks. Will Klein was recalled from Triple-A Omaha to replace Schreiber in the bullpen.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Likely headed for IL

Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said Monday that Schreiber (knee) is likely to be placed on the 15-day injured list, Joel Goldberg of Bally Sports Kansas City reports. The Royals haven't provided an updated diagnosis for Schreiber after he was forced out of his relief appearance in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Cubs with right knee patella tendon discomfort, but the team has apparently already deduced that the right-handed reliever is dealing with more than a day-to-day concern. Schreiber could cede his spot on the Royals' 26-man active roster to right-hander Michael Lorenzen, whom Kansas City acquired from Texas earlier Monday.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Takes second loss

Schreiber (3-2) allowed three runs on three hits over one-third of an inning to take the loss versus the Rangers on Friday. Schreiber was on the hook for three of the five runs the Rangers scored in the sixth inning. After opening June with four scoreless innings, Schreiber's struggles have returned -- he's given up eight runs (six earned) over his last four appearances, taking two blown saves in that span. Friday's outing pushed his ERA up to 4.15 with a 1.48 WHIP and 20:11 K:BB over 30.1 innings. While he has a save and 16 holds to his name this year, he could see a move to a low-leverage role if he continues to falter.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Tallies first save

Schreiber picked up the save Friday against the Angels. He pitched a shutout inning, allowing one hit with no strikeouts. Schreiber collected his first save of the season and the 10th of his career. Royals closer James McArthur had worked back-to-back nights on Tuesday and Wednesday, so manager Matt Quatraro could have been giving him extra rest Friday night. However, McArthur also blew saves Sunday and Tuesday and has seen his ERA jump from 2.87 to 4.15 in the last week, so his hold on the ninth-inning role could be slipping.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Collects third win

Schreiber (3-0) earned the win Friday versus the Rangers, allowing two hits and two walks with one strikeout in a scoreless inning. Schreiber erased a walk with a double play, then loaded the bases again before striking out Marcus Semien to end the top of the seventh inning. The Royals rallied for six runs in their half of the frame, and Schreiber ended up with the win. He's pitched 5.1 consecutive scoreless innings, and he's been scored on just once this season, pitching to 0.59 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 11:5 K:BB over 15.1 innings. He's getting some good luck, as indicated by a .227 BABIP and 3.06 FIP, but the right-hander looks poised to play an important high-leverage role for the Royals throughout the year.

  • Royals' John Schreiber: Traded to Royals

The Red Sox traded Schreiber to the Royals on Saturday in exchange for David Sandlin, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Though he missed nearly two months of the season due to a shoulder strain, Schreiber instantly becomes one of the top relievers in Kansas City's bullpen after posting a 3.86 ERA and 1.41 WHIP across 46.2 frames in 2023. The 29-year-old right-hander often served in high-leverage situations over the past two years and could be in the mix for save opportunities with his new club.

  • Red Sox's John Schreiber: Reaches deal with Sox

Schreiber signed a one-year, $1.175 million contract with the Red Sox on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Schreiber impressed during his first full season with Boston in 2022 and got off to a hot start last year as well. However, the 29-year-old righty injured his shoulder in May and wasn't quite the same when he came back in late July, recording a 4.85 ERA and 1.48 WHIP through 29.2 innings post-injury. Schreiber may still be an option for Boston in high-leverage situations this season, but his reliability remains questionable.

  • Red Sox's John Schreiber: Let down by defense, blows save

Schreiber allowed one run on two hits over one inning and blew the save in Saturday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to Toronto. For Boston's first save opportunity since closer Kenley Jansen (illness) landed on the COVID-19-related injured list, Red Sox manager Alex Cora brought in Schreiber to close. The right-hander should have survived with a save, but center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela misplayed a Daulton Varsho liner, turning a potential game-ending out into a triple, which plated the tying run. Schreiber entered the game following Chris Martin, who is also in the mix for saves while Jansen works his way back.

  • Red Sox's John Schreiber: Opening Saturday's contest

Schreiber will serve as the Red Sox's opening pitcher for Saturday's game against the Blue Jays, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Chris Murphy, who last pitched Sunday against the Giants and covered 3.1 innings, will likely serve as a bulk reliever behind Schreiber, who will likely work only an inning or two. The Red Sox have now deployed Schreiber as an opener for two of his five appearances since he returned from the 60-day injured list last week.

  • Red Sox's John Schreiber: Activated, serving as opener

The Red Sox activated Schreiber (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. In what will be his first appearance for Boston since May 15, Schreiber will serve as the team's opening pitcher in Tuesday's game against Atlanta. Schreiber is unlikely to work more than an inning or two before giving way to Nick Pivetta, who is expected to serve as the team's primary pitcher out of the bullpen.

  • Red Sox's John Schreiber: Closing in on return

Schreiber (shoulder) is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list Sunday versus the Mets or next Tuesday against Atlanta, MLB.com reports. Schreiber has made four rehab appearances with Triple-A Worcester and is expected to pitch in back-to-back games Wednesday and Thursday. That could be his final test before he rejoins the Red Sox bullpen. Schreiber has been sidelined since mid-May with a right shoulder strain.

  • Red Sox's John Schreiber: Beginning assignment over weekend

Manager Alex Cora said Thursday that Schreiber (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment this weekend, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. If all goes according to plan, Schreiber will be back to begin Boston's upcoming series with the Mets on July 21. The 29-year-old reliever has been on the shelf since May 15 with a right shoulder strain, and he put up a 2.12 ERA and 1.29 WHIP through 17 innings before getting injured.

  • Red Sox's John Schreiber: Throws bullpen session

Schreiber (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Tuesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Schreiber can't return from the 60-day injured list until after the All-Star break, but he should be ready around the time he's first eligible if all continues to go well with his throwing progression. He's been sidelined since mid-May because of a right teres major strain.

The Red Sox transferred Schreiber (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. Schreiber initially landed on the injured list May 16 with a right teres major sprain. His transfer ensures he will remain out until after the All-Star break and creates room for Tayler Scott, who was acquired in a trade with the Dodgers on Thursday.
