  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Placed on IL

Miami moved Edwards to the 10-day injured list Sunday due to a left mid-back strain.

Edwards sat out both Friday and Saturday due to the back issue, and he's now going to need to rest for at least eight more days before potentially returning to action for Miami. In positive news for the Marlins, the team got another starting middle infielder back, Otto Lopez (ankle) was activated from the 10-day IL in a corresponding move. While Edwards is sidelined, Javier Sanoja will likely serve as the team's primary option at shortstop.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Remains out Saturday

Edwards (back) isn't in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Rays.

Edwards was scratched from the lineup ahead of Friday's contest due to back tightness and will take another day off to recover. Manager Clayton McCullough said Saturday that imaging on Edwards' back came back negative, per Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, so the team will have him do some baseball activities to see where he's at. In the meantime, Javier Sanoja will draw another start at shortstop as Ronny Simon mans second base.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Scratched with back tightness

Edwards was scratched from the lineup for Friday's game against the Rays due to back tightness, Isaac Azout of FishOnFirst.com reports.

Edwards has started all 42 games for the Marlins so far this season, but he'll be forced to the bench Friday due to the back issue. The 25-year-old should be considered day-to-day while Javier Sanoja steps in at shortstop for Miami.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Doing damage on basepaths

Edwards went 1-for-3 with two walks, a run scored and a stolen base in Friday's loss to the White Sox.

The shortstop is still struggling to regain his 2024 form at the plate, but Edwards is taking advantage when he does get on base. He's up to 10 steals in 12 attempts on the season, and four of those pilfers have come in the last six games despite the fact that he's batting just .190 (4-for-21) during that stretch, although he's also drawn six free passes.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Swipes eighth bag

Edwards went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's loss to the A's.

The shortstop swiped a bag for the second straight game, giving him eight steals in 10 attempts through 33 contests on the season. Edwards said early in spring training that he was aiming for 60 stolen bases this year, but he'll need to pick up his pace significantly to meet that goal. Getting on base more often would help -- after delivering a .328 batting average and .397 OBP in his breakout 2024, Edwards has seen those marks drop to .259 and .329 to begin the current campaign.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Reaches three times in loss

Edwards went 2-for-5 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored during Thursday's 6-4 loss to the Diamondbacks.

Edwards is without an extra-base hit in his past nine contests, but he's still providing plenty of production atop the lineup with a .400 batting average (16-for-40) and eight walks during a 10-game hit streak. The 25-year-old entered the day tied for fifth in MLB with six stolen bases and also has 11 runs and seven RBI through 85 plate appearances.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Drives in two runs Friday

Edwards went 2-for-4 with one walk, one run and two RBI in Friday's 7-4 loss to the Nationals.

Edwards got the scoring started for the Marlins with a two-RBI single in the fifth frame, and he crossed home plate two batters later on Kyle Stowers double. Friday marked Edwards' fourth multi-hit game of the season, and he's started the year slashing .300/.390/.360 with three stolen bases, eight walks and five RBI across 59 plate appearances.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Steals bag in loss

Edwards went 2-for-3 with a steal and a walk in Monday's 2-0 loss to the Mets.

The Miami shortstop returned to the lineup Monday after being scratched Sunday with a sore right knee. Edwards allayed any doubts of his health when he swiped second in the third inning for his third steal in as many attempts. The 25-year-old is slashing .282/.356/.359 with four runs scored and three RBI over 45 plate appearances.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Good to go Monday

Edwards (knee) will start at shortstop and bat leadoff in Monday's game against the Mets.

Edwards had been managing a sore right knee that resulted in him being scratched from the lineup ahead of Sunday's game in Atlanta before that contest was postponed due to inclement weather. The knee issue put his availability for Monday's series opener in question, but he ultimately won't end up missing any game action. Edwards enters Monday with a .250 average, four runs, three RBI and two stolen bases through Miami's first nine contests.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Scratched with sore knee

The Marlins scratched Edwards from the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta due to a sore right knee, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

According to De Nicola, Edwards initially tweaked his knee in the second game of the season March 28, but he played through the injury before aggravating it on a slide back to first base in Saturday's 4-0 win. Javier Sanoja will pick up a start at shortstop Sunday in place of Edwards, who is considered day-to-day heading into Miami's three-game series versus the Mets that begins Monday.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Four hits against Mets

Edwards went 4-for-6 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's extra-inning loss to the Mets.

The shortstop rolled into the game having gone 4-for-22 (.182) through his first six starts of the season, but Edwards doubled both his hit and steal totals with Wednesday's performance. Base knocks figure to come in bunches for the 25-year-old after he slashed .328/.397/.423 over 303 plate appearances in a breakout 2024, but even as Miami's everyday leadoff hitter, his fantasy value remains capped due to his lack of power and lack of a reliable supporting cast.

  • Marlins' Xavier Edwards: Swipes first bag of year

Edwards went 0-for-4 with a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Pirates.

The shortstop reached base on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning and promptly stole second, giving Edwards his first steal of 2025. After swiping 31 in only 70 big-league games last season, the 25-year-old set his sights high this year and said this spring he believes he can steal 60. Through the Marlins' first four games, Edwards is batting .200 (3-for-15) with three walks, a double, two runs and two RBI as the club's everyday leadoff hitter.
