Padres' Steven Wilson: Not ready for mound work
Manager Bob Melvin said Monday that Wilson (hip) has resumed playing catch at the Padres' facility in Arizona, but the right-hander has yet to start throwing off a mound, MLB.com reports.
Wilson was placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 30 with left hip inflammation. The Padres haven't shut Wilson down nor indicated that his injury is especially serious, and while he won't require an extensive buildup as a one- or two-inning reliever, he's still not a lock to make it back from the IL before the season ends Oct. 1.... Padres' Steven Wilson: Shelved with hip inflammation
The Padres placed Wilson on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left hip inflammation.
The transaction is retroactive to Monday, so Wilson will be eligible for activation Sept. 12. Wilson has functioned as one of the Padres' setup men in front of closer Josh Hader this season, gathering 22 holds and one win while pitching to a 3.91 ERA and 1.17 WHIP over 53 innings. The Padres called up lefty Ray Kerr from Triple-A El Paso to replace Wilson in the bullpen.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Stung by wildness Sunday
Wilson (1-2) took the loss and was tagged with a blown save Sunday against Milwaukee, giving up four runs on one hit and three walks over one-third of an inning.
Wilson couldn't find the plate against the Brewers, throwing just seven of 20 pitches for a strike and walking a trio of batters. One of the free passes was intentional, but that doesn't do much to soften the extent of the reliever's struggles. Wilson came into the contest with the Padres up 4-2, and he left having given up the lead, though there were already two runners on base upon his entrance. Despite the poor outing, Wilson figures to continue to hold a prominent place in the San Diego's bullpen. He's posted a 3.91 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 57:27 K:BB over 53 innings on the campaign while notching a team-leading 22 holds.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Returns from injured list
Wilson (pectoral) was activated from the 15-day injured list Friday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Wilson has been on the shelf since late June with a right pectoral strain but is ready to rejoin the Padres' bullpen after throwing to hitters a couple times without issue. It's a boost to San Diego's relief corps, as Wilson boasts a 2.43 ERA with 40 strikeouts over 37 frames in 2023.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Throws to hitters Saturday
Wilson (pectoral) tossed a simulated inning Saturday, per MLB.com.
Wilson has been on the injured list since June 27 with a right pec strain. The righty reliever reportedly felt fine after throwing to hitters Saturday, and he's scheduled for another live session Tuesday. If that goes well, Wilson could rejoin the Padres bullpen immediately following the All-Star break.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Placed on 15-day IL
Wilson was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right pectoral strain Tuesday.
Wilson will be unavailable until after the All-Star break as he tends to his injured pectoral. He will be replaced in the major-league bullpen by Drew Carlton, who was called up from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. Wilson has been very effective this season with San Diego, compiling a 2.43 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 40 strikeouts over 37 frames in 2023.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Collects 14th hold
Wilson earned a hold against Tampa Bay on Saturday, striking out two batters in one inning.
Wilson followed Blake Snell's six scoreless frames with one of his own, needing just 13 pitches to retire the side in order. The right-hander has held the opponent scoreless in 17 of his past 18 outings, posting a 0.95 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 23:5 K:BB over 19 innings during that span. He's emerged as one of the Padres' most reliable relievers and is tied for third in the majors with 14 holds, making him a solid option in fantasy leagues that count that category.... See More ... Padres' Steven Wilson: Seeing more eighth-inning work
Wilson worked the eighth inning during Sunday's loss to Milwaukee, tossing a scoreless frame during which he allowed one walk and no hits.
This was the second time in the past week that Wilson pitched the eighth inning of a close game -- in the other instance, he picked up a hold during a 4-2 win over the Mets. The right-hander's role isn't set in stone, as in his other two outings last week he pitched once in the seventh inning and another time in the fourth and fifth frames. It seems to be clear, however, that Wilson has earned the trust of manager Bob Melvin in tight late-game situations. That trust stems from a strong start to the campaign during which Wilson has posted a 0.84 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 11.0 K/9 over nine appearances. He's walking a few too many batters (five through 10.2 innings), and Josh Hader isn't in any danger of losing his job as San Diego's closer, but Wilson could be a worthwhile pickup in fantasy leagues that count holds even when Robert Suarez (elbow) and Drew Pomeranz (elbow/neck) return to action.... Padres' Steven Wilson: Mixed results this spring
Wilson finished the Cactus League slate with a 3.52 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB over 7.2 innings.
Wilson allowed a lot of baserunners across his seven outings, but only three of them crossed the plate. The righty reliever is coming off a strong rookie campaign during which he posted a 3.06 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 53:20 K:BB over 53 frames. Wilson could see some high-leverage work to begin the season with Robert Suarez (arm) and Drew Pomeranz (elbow) likely to begin the campaign on the injured list.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Tabbed to open Thursday
Wilson will start Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Wilson has a 2.88 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 50:18 K:BB across 50 innings this year, and he'll make his first career start as the opener in Thursday's series finale. The rookie right-hander is unlikely to qualify for a potential victory and should give way to the bullpen after an inning or two.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Back with big club
Wilson was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Monday.
Wilson was optioned to El Paso earlier this month, but he will rejoin the big club and take the place of Tanner Scott (finger), who landed on the injured list in the corresponding move.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Optioned to El Paso
Wilson was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday.
It's not every day you see a pitcher with a 3.57 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 33 appearances sent packing. The Padres are getting Robert Suarez (knee) back from the injured list, and Wilson is a rookie with options. He should be back with the big-league team in short order.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Returns from injured list
Wilson (hamstring) was activated from the 15-day injured list by the Padres on Friday.
Wilson landed on the shelf with hamstring tendinitis in late June, and he'll rejoin the active roster after a one-game rehab stint with Triple-A El Paso. The rookie right-hander has recorded one save and five holds with a 3.62 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB across 27.1 innings this season.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Tosses bullpen session
Wilson (hamstring) completed a bullpen session Friday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Wilson has been on the injured list since June 26 due to soreness in his hamstring and hip. The rookie reliever's absence isn't expected to be long term, and the fact that he was able to throw from a mound Friday suggests that he should be able to return shortly after the All-Star break. Wilson posted a 3.62 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 29:9 K:BB over 27.1 innings before going down with the injury.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Shelved with hamstring injury
The Padres placed Wilson on the 15-day injured list Sunday with left hamstring tendinitis.
San Diego brought up lefty Ray Kerr from Triple-A El Paso to replace Wilson in the bullpen. Before apparently picking up the injury during his one-out appearance in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Phillies, Wilson had compiled four wins, one save, five holds and a 3.62 ERA across 27.1 innings in relief this season.... Padres' Steven Wilson: Credited with win Saturday
Wilson (4-1) earned the win over Colorado in Game 1 of a doubleheader Saturday with a perfect inning during which he struck out one batter.
The low-scoring game went into extra frames, and Wilson was tasked with containing the Rockies in the top of the 10th. He started off the inning by striking out Connor Joe and retired all three batters he faced on only eight pitches. Wilson was credited with the win when San Diego scored in the bottom of the frame. The rookie right-hander has four victories, five holds and one save this season. He's posted a 3.97 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 22:7 K:B across 22.2 innings.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Summoned from minors
The Padres recalled Wilson from Triple-A El Paso on Sunday.
Wilson was added to the 26-man active roster as a replacement for Mike Clevinger (triceps), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. MacKenzie Gore is slated to start Sunday's game in San Francisco and will likely end up replacing Clevinger moving forward should the Padres elect to keep a five-man rotation intact, so Wilson will likely be relegated to a middle-relief role out of the bullpen while he's up with San Diego. In his 15 appearances with the big club earlier this season, Wilson collected three wins and five holds and posted a 4.20 ERA in 15 innings.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Optioned to Triple-A
Wilson was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Friday.
Wilson saw some high-leverage opportunities during his time with the major-league club, and he was rewarded with three wins and five holds. However, he converted just one of his three save chances and will head to the minors after Tim Hill (shoulder) was reinstated from the injured list Friday. If Wilson performs well in El Paso, it wouldn't be surprising to see him rejoin the Padres at some point.... See More ... See Less
Padres' Steven Wilson: Secures fifth hold
Wilson earned a hold against Atlanta on Friday by allowing no runs over two-thirds of an inning. He surrendered one hit and struck out one.
When Wilson came on in the eighth inning, the Padres were up by only one run. The right-hander retired the first two batters he faced before allowing a single and subsequently being replaced by closer Taylor Rogers, who wrapped up the frame. Wilson's scoreless outing was his fourth straight after he gave up two runs April 30 against Pittsburgh. The right-hander has compiled a 2.51 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB across 14.1 innings on the season. He has racked up three wins, five holds and one save through 14 outings.... See More ... See Less
