  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Placed on injured list

The Angels placed Sandoval on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a right oblique strain. With a week left in the regular season, Sandoval's trip to the IL will cause him to miss the rest of the year. He finishes 2023 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 144.2 innings across 28 starts, and he'll be replaced on the roster by Kolton Ingram, who was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake in a corresponding move. Sandoval was on track to start the final game of the season Sunday, and the Angels have yet to announce a replacement.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Dealing with oblique injury

Sandoval left Monday's start against Texas with right oblique tightness, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports. With the Angels already eliminated from postseason contention, it would be surprising to see Sandoval pitch again this year with just a handful of games left, especially considering the location of his injury. The team should have an official update on his availability down the stretch after evaluating him further over the next day or so.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Exits outing early

Sandoval left Monday's start against the Rangers due to an undisclosed injury, Sarah Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Times reports. He allowed two hits and five walks while striking out two over three scoreless innings prior to exiting. Sandoval suffered the injury in the top of the fourth inning after walking the first two batters he faced, and after receiving a visit from his manager and the trainer, he walked off the mound for the night. He'll be considered day-to-day until the nature of the injury comes into focus.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Punches out seven in no-decision

Sandoval did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over five innings in a 6-2 loss against the Rays. He struck out seven. The 26-year-old gave up a leadoff double to Yandy Diaz and a two-run homer to Randy Arozarena before registering an out in the game. Despite allowing at least one baserunner in every inning, Sandoval managed to hold Tampa Bay scoreless for the remainder of his outing. The southpaw didn't issue any free passes in his previous start, but he went right back to his wild ways Tuesday, walking three, the 15th time in 27 tries this season he's given three or more free passes in a game, which has resulted in a career worsts in BB/9 (4.4) and WHIP (1.50) through 141.2 innings. Sandoval is tentatively scheduled to face a tough Rangers lineup at home early next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Bested by Orioles

Sandoval (7-12) allowed seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and four walks while striking out three over five innings to take the loss Wednesday versus the Orioles. Sandoval has given up at least four runs in four of his last five outings, and he's walked no fewer than three batters in any of those starts. It was fair to expect him to have some difficulty with the Orioles' deep lineup, which produced just one extra-base hit against the southpaw. Sandoval's ERA ticked up to 4.31 with a 1.38 WHIP and 115:66 K:BB through 131.2 innings over 25 starts. He's projected for another tough start in Seattle in next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Falters in loss Saturday

Sandoval (6-10) took the loss against Tampa Bay in Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out four batters over 4.2 innings. Sandoval got through three scoreless frames before he yielded two runs on two hits in the fourth. Those were the only two earned runs he surrendered -- when the Rays put up four runs against him in the fifth, they were all unearned due to a two-out error by Jordyn Adams. Still, Sandoval can't be entirely absolved of blame since he gave up four consecutive hits (including two doubles) following Adams' miscue. This was the second straight disappointing outing for the lefty hurler, as he gave up five runs (four earned) over 2.2 frames in his previous start. Prior to the pair of poor performances, Sandoval appeared to be putting things together with a 1.86 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 27:14 :BB over 29 innings across a five-game stretch.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Walks six in loss

Sandoval (6-9) yielded five runs (four earned) on four hits and six walks over 2.2 innings Monday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Rangers. Sandoval allowed two runs in the second inning followed by three more in the third and struggled with his command all night. He gave up two or fewer runs in five straight starts before Monday's hiccup. His ERA climbed to 4.09 with a lackluster 98:52 K:BB through 112.1 frames. Sandoval is currently lined up to face the Reds at home in his next outing.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Takes no-decision

Sandoval allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out eight over 6.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Monday. Sandoval earned a quality start, but he lost his chance at the win when he allowed a game-tying home run to J.D. Davis in the seventh inning. Over his last five outings, Sandoval has given up just nine runs (six earned) across 29 innings. He's now at a 4.02 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 92:46 K:BB through 109.2 innings through 20 starts this season. The southpaw is lined up for a tough road start in Texas next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Tough loss Tuesday

Sandoval (6-8) took the loss Tuesday as the Angels fell 5-1 to Atlanta, giving up two runs on three hits and four walks over five innings. He struck out three. The lefty wasn't exactly sharp, throwing only 53 of 90 pitches for strikes, but Sandoval was mostly able to escape trouble and limit the damage. However, he was outdueled by Spencer Strider. Sandoval has been tagged for two runs or less in four straight starts since the beginning of July, posting a 2.42 ERA and 1.12 WHIP over that stretch despite a lackluster 19:13 K:BB through 22.1 innings. He'll look for a better result in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Giants.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Nabs win in nightcap of twin bill

Sandoval (6-7) earned the win in Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against Detroit, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four batters over five innings. Sandoval needed 97 pitches to get through five frames, but he kept the Tigers off the scoreboard outside of a two-run third inning. The timing of the left-hander's turn in the rotation in relation to the All-Star break limited him to just three appearances in July, but he pitched well in those outings, posting a 2.08 ERA and 1.04 WHIP over 17.1 frames. Sandoval may be turning things around after compiling a 4.57 ERA and 1.49 WHIP across 15 starts through the end of June.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Starting nightcap Thursday

Sandoval will start the second game of Thursday's doubleheader at Detroit, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. Sandoval had been scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather around Comerica Park. Shohei Ohtani is being moved up to pitch the opener of Thursday's twin bill and then Sandoval will handle the nightcap.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Angels-Tigers postponed Wednesday

Sandoval and the Angels won't face the Tigers on Wednesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather in Detroit. The two teams will make up the postponed game as part of a straight doubleheader Thursday. Expect Sandoval to start one of those games, while Chase Silseth likely takes the hill for the other.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Wild in no-decision

Sandoval logged a no-decision against San Diego on Wednesday, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and four walks while striking out five batters over five innings. The positive for Sandoval was that he allowed just a pair of singles and one earned run (though a first-inning unearned run was the result of his own error). However, the left-hander struggled with his control, throwing just 48 of 85 pitches for a strike and walking four batters. It was the sixth time over his past eight outings that he's issued multiple free passes, and he's given up four walks three times during that span. Not coincidentally, Sandoval has struggled during that stretch, posting a 5.71 ERA and a 1-5 record. Sandoval's 3.8 BB/9 on the season is on track to be his highest since his rookie campaign in 2019.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Surrenders seven in loss

Sandoval (4-7) took the loss Thursday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings against the White Sox. He struck out eight. Most of the damage against Sandoval came in the third inning, when he allowed six runs on six hits. The 26-year-old left-hander has struggled lately, pitching to a 7.46 ERA through five starts in June. Overall, Sandoval now sports a 4.69 ERA with a 1.50 WHIP and 65:32 K:BB in 15 starts (80.2 innings) this season. Sandoval will look to get back on track in his next outing, currently lined up for next week in San Diego.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Limits damage Friday

Sandoval gave up three runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out three over five-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Friday. Given the traffic on the bases, this could have been a far worse start at Coors Field for Sandoval. It's the second time in his last three outings that he's given up at least 10 hits, and the leadoff home run he allowed to Jurickson Profar in the first inning was just the sixth long ball Sandoval's surrendered this year. He continues to effectively limit damage with a 4.16 ERA despite a 1.47 WHIP and 57:30 K:BB over 75.2 innings through 14 starts. The southpaw is projected for a home start versus the White Sox next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Strikes out eight in loss

Sandoval (3-6) took the loss Saturday versus the Mariners, surrendering five runs on 10 hits while striking out eight and walking none over five innings. This was the third time in 12 starts that he hasn't walked a batter, and the eight strikeouts was a season high, but that's where the good news ends. He's given up 11 runs over his last 8.1 innings, and while struggling in Houston isn't too surprising, Sandoval's work against the Mariners wasn't great. The southpaw now has a 4.52 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 48:25 K:BB through 63.2 innings this season. He's lined up for a favorable road start in Kansas City next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Bounces back but takes loss

Sandoval (3-4) took the loss Sunday versus the Marlins, allowing two runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two over six innings. Sandoval was able to complete six frames for the fifth time in 10 starts, but a lack of run support sent him to his third straight loss. This was his fourth quality start of the season and the second to come in a loss. Sandoval now has a 3.42 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 36:22 K:BB through 55.1 innings. He hasn't struck out more than five batters in any of his last seven appearances. His next start is expected to be a challenging road matchup with the Astros.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Short outing Saturday

Sandoval (3-3) allowed three runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings, taking the loss versus the Twins on Saturday. Sandoval has failed to complete five innings in three of his nine starts this season, and each time has been because he's issued too many free passes. This was the first time in his last three outings he'd issued multiple walks. The southpaw has a 3.47 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP and 34:20 K:BB over 49.1 innings this season. Sandoval will look to rein in his control next weekend versus the Marlins.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Picks up second straight win

Sandoval (3-1) got the win over the Cardinals on Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings. Sandoval retired 13 of the first 14 hitters he faced, but he eventually ran into a little trouble in the fifth. The Cardinals singled twice, and Tyler O'Neill wound up crossing the plate on a groundout from Andrew Knizner for their only run of the evening. Outside of an April 20 outing against the Yankees, Sandoval has allowed two runs or fewer in all of his other starts, although he has only tossed more than five innings twice, and his 1.6 K/BB is currently on track to be the worst mark of his career. The 26-year-old will carry a 2.93 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 24:15 K:BB into his next projected start against the Astros next week.

  • Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Goes seven frames in win

Sandoval (2-1) earned the win over Oakland on Wednesday, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out five batters. Sandoval allowed a run in each of the first, third and fifth frames, but the Angels' offense exploded for nine runs while he was in the contest to take most of the stress off him. The southpaw struck out a modest five batters but racked up an impressive 18 swings-and-misses while refusing to issue any walks. Sandoval's outing was a nice bounce-back from his previous start, when he gave up a season-worst five runs over four frames against the Yankees.
