  • Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Notches 44th save

Clase picked up the save Friday against the Tigers. He allowed one run on one hit over one inning without walking or striking out a batter. Clase yielded a 391-foot solo homer to Spencer Torkelson to lead off the ninth inning before promptly retiring the next three Detroit batters. Although he has secured a career-high 44 saves, the Cleveland closer has struggled a bit this year, posting a career-worst 3.14 ERA and 8.0 K/9 (compared to a career 1.47 ERA and 9.3 K/9 prior to the season). Clase been especially shaky in September with a 4.63 ERA and 5.4 K/9 over 11.2 innings.

  • Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Nabs 43rd save

Clase picked up the save Wednesday against Cincinnati. He allowed one hit over a scoreless inning while not recording any strikeouts or walks. Clase allowed a hit to Noelvi Marte in the second at-bat after entering the contest with a one-run lead in the top of the ninth, but lucked out when Marte was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. The right-handed reliever was then able to retire the next batter and secure his league-leading 43rd save of the season, needing only seven pitches in total to get through the frame. Clase has now converted four of his last five save attempts but he's also allowed at least one hit in five straight appearances.

  • Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Collects win after 12th blown save

Clase (3-9) blew the save but picked up the win in Friday's 9-8 victory over the Orioles, giving up two runs on two hits in an inning of relief. He struck out one. The right-hander had Baltimore down to its final strike in the top of the ninth inning before hitting Anthony Santander with a pitch, followed by a single, a wild pitch and a double. Fortunately for Clase, Cleveland had one more burst of offense left in it in the bottom of the frame. The closer leads the majors with 42 saves but also has an MLB-high 12 blown saves, with Colorado setup man Jake Bird being the only other reliever in double digits, and Clase's 3.18 ERA this year is nearly two runs higher than his 1.36 mark from 2022.

  • Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Records 40th save

Clase pitched a perfect inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Giants. Clase needed 13 pitches (eight strikes) to complete the clean inning just a day after he blew a save in the 10th inning. This was Clase's 40th save of the season -- he's the first to reach that mark in 2023, though he's also blown a major-league-leading 11 saves in 69 appearances. • Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Falters again Monday

Clase (2-9) failed to record an out Monday versus the Giants, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits to take a blown save and the loss. Clase gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Blake Sabol and LaMonte Wade, surrendering the one-run lead the Guardians had taken in the top of the 10th inning. This was Clase's second blown save in his last three appearances, and he's up to 11 blown saves while converting a major-league leading 39 saves this season. He's at a 3.15 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 58:15 K:BB through 66.2 innings. Despite his struggles this year, the Guardians have stood by the 25-year-old in the closer role throughout the campaign, and it seems unlikely he'd lose the gig this late in the year with the team's playoff hopes already quite faint.

  • Guardians' Emmanuel Clase: Draws one-game suspension

Clase received a one-game suspension Monday for his role in an on-field brawl that occurred in Saturday's game against the White Sox, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. MLB announced a six-game suspension for White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson, a three-game suspension for Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez, and one-game bans for Clase, Guardians manager Terry Francona, Guardians third base coach Mike Sarbaugh and White Sox manager Pedro Grifol after reviewing the incident. Anderson and Ramirez are both appealing their bans, while Clase and Francona will serve their one-game suspensions in Monday's series opener with the Blue Jays. Trevor Stephan (18 holds, two saves) has operated as the Guardians' top setup man for most of the season and would presumably be the top candidate to step in for Clase as the team's closer Monday if a save situation arises.
