Twins' Matt Canterino: Out with shoulder strain
Canterino is out indefinitely after suffering a right shoulder injury which an MRI showed to be a strain, the Minnesota Star Tribune reports.
Canterino hasn't pitched in any of the previous two seasons, as he was sidelined for all of 2023 following Tommy John surgery and then suffered a rotator cuff strain last spring. The Twins had planned to move him to the bullpen to reduce the workload on his arm and shoulder, but it sounds like this could be another significant setback.

He returned for spring training last year but suffered a rotator cuff strain in mid-March and missed the rest of the season. The 2019 second-round draft pick was a rising pitching prospect when last on the mound in 2022 as he posted a 1.83 ERA with a 13.2 K/9 in 34.1 innings at Double-A.

He has some upside as a reliever as a result -- if he can stay healthy.

The Twins optioned Canterino to Triple-A St. Paul on Monday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
Canterino missed all of last season following Tommy John surgery but impressed this spring, yielding one run with a 5:0 K:BB over three innings. The 26-year-old could return to a starting role at St. Paul but might have a better shot to make an impact for the Twins as a reliever in 2024.

Twins' Matt Canterino: Fully healthy this spring
Canterino has thrown live batting practice this spring and is fully healthy entering spring training after working his way back from August 2022 Tommy John surgery, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
Canterino, a 2019 second-round draft pick, was a rising pitching prospect when last on the mound in 2022 as he posted a 1.83 ERA with a 13.2 K/9 in 34.1 innings at Double-A. He'll likely begin the season at Double-A and be on a limited pitch count in the spring as he works his way back to full speed. Canterino, who has been on Double-A Wichita's 7-day injured list since June 8 with a right elbow strain, is scheduled to resume a throwing program this week at the Twins' spring training site in Fort Myers, Fla., Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports.
Canterino was cleared to resume throwing after meeting with renowned arm specialist Dr. Keith Meister a few days earlier. The right-hander was previously shut down in mid-August of last season with a strained elbow, so the Twins will more than likely have the 24-year-old build back up slowly in Florida. Canterino was placed on the 7-day injured list at Double-A Wichita on Wednesday. He's battling elbow tendinitis, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports.
This is worrisome since a right elbow strain ended his 2021 season in mid-August, but Wolfson reports the team hopes he can return in two weeks. Canterino is one of Minnesota's top pitching prospects and looked impressive with a 1.83 ERA and 50:22 K:BB ratio in 34.1 innings at Double-A.

Canterino has a 2.79 ERA with 14 strikeouts and eight walks over 9.2 innings in his first four starts at Double-A Wichita.
Canterino has given up too many walks early in the season, but the more important thing is that he looks healthy after a right elbow strain ended his 2021 season in mid-August. He pitched just three innings in his last start as the team manages his workload on his way back from injury.
