Pirates' Joey Bart: Activated from IL
The Pirates reinstated Bart (concussion) from the injured list Tuesday.
Bart landed on the 7-day concussion IL in late May, but lingering symptoms caused his recovery to extend well into June. He was cleared to begin a rehab assignment Wednesday, during which he went 3-for-13 with four walks, two RBI and a run scored across five games. Now out of concussion protocol and fully healthy, Bart should slide back in as Pittsburgh's primary catcher.

Pirates' Brett Sullivan: Removed from 40-man roster
The Pirates designated Sullivan for assignment Monday.
The club needed to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Dauri Moreta (elbow), who was activated from the 60-day injured list. Booting Sullivan from the active roster suggests the Pirates are preparing for Joey Bart (concussion) to be activated prior to Tuesday's game in Detroit.

Pirates' Dauri Moreta: Activated and optioned
The Pirates activated Moreta (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Moreta has made 18 rehab appearances as he comes back from Tommy John surgery, allowing five runs with a 21:12 K:BB over 16.2 innings. The 29-year-old will continue to knock some rust off at Triple-A Indianapolis while he awaits another opportunity at the big-league level.

Pirates' Mitch Keller: Another quality start
Keller didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Cubs, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out three.
Keller owns a middling 4.08 ERA on the season, but he's been an extremely reliable arm on the front end of Pittsburgh's rotation. He's had two blow-up starts, allowing a combined 13 earned runs in those outings, and owns a 3.10 ERA outside of those two appearances. His consistency is shown in his 11 quality starts -- tied for the most in baseball. However, a lack of run support has made Keller's campaign frustrating, as the 29-year-old has posted a 1-9 record through 14 outings. In 2024, his ninth loss came Sept. 1. He's tentatively scheduled to face the Rangers his next time out.

Pirates' David Bednar: Yields walk-off
Bednar (1-5) took the loss Sunday against the Cubs, allowing an unearned run on one hit and one walk with a strikeout over one-third of an inning.
Bednar took the hill in the bottom of the 10th frame and intentionally walked Kyle Tucker to lead off the inning before a double steal put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs. While Bednar would strike out Jon Berti immediately after, Ian Happ delivered a walk-off base hit. It was the first run Bednar had allowed in his last nine innings. Bednar has converted on all 10 of his save chances in 2025, owning a 3.38 ERA and a 34:5 K:BB over 24 innings.

Pirates' Henry Davis: Getting breather Sunday
Davis is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
Davis will get a rest after going 1-for-6 with a double, a walk and a run over the prior two games. Brett Sullivan will handle catching duties.

Pirates' Andrew McCutchen: Getting afternoon off
McCutchen is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs.
McCutchen will get a chance to catch his breath after starting eight straight games. Alexander Canario will pick up a start in right field while Bryan Reynolds occupies McCutchen's usual spot at designated hitter.

Pirates' Mike Burrows: Plenty of whiffs in no-decision
Burrows came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 2-1 loss to the Cubs, allowing one run on five hits over 5.1 innings. He struck out eight without walking a batter.
The rookie right-hander engaged in a pitchers' duel with veteran Matthew Boyd, and Burrows racked up an impressive 16 swinging strikes among his 81 pitches (56 total strikes) before exiting the mound with the score tied 1-1. The 5.1 innings tied for his longest outing among his first five appearances in 2025 with the Pirates, and Burrows will take a 4.24 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 25:7 K:BB through 23.1 innings into his next start, which lines up to come at home next weekend against the Rangers.

Pirates' Adam Frazier: Taking over in left field
Frazier went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base Friday against the Cubs.
Frazier looked to be the odd man out when Nick Gonzales returned to the lineup, but Frazier has since overtaken Alexander Canario and Tommy Pham for playing time in left field. He's started four of Pittsburgh's last five games at the position and gone 6-for-20 with three RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base in that span.

Pirates' Dennis Santana: Picks up second win
Santana (2-1) blew the save but earned the win against the Cubs on Friday, striking out one batter across 1.2 innings without allowing a run, hit or walk.
Santana was brought out of the bullpen for the eighth inning with runners on the corners. He was able to force a fielder's choice groundout against Dansby Swanson, but that allowed Kyle Tucker to score from third base to tie the game at 1-1. Santana returned to the mound for the ninth and kept the Cubs off the board, and he was credited with the win after the Pirates scored in the top of the 10th. Santanta has a 1.80 ERA, 0.80 WHIP and 25:5 K:BB across 30 innings this season.

Pirates' Paul Skenes: Blanks Cubs across five frames
Skenes did not factor into Friday's decision against the Cubs, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five across five scoreless innings.
Friday was just the third time in 15 starts this season that Skenes failed to make it to the sixth inning. He still managed to keep the Cubs off the board, thanks in large part to an assist from the Pirates' fielders in the fifth inning to throw Ian Happ out at home. Skenes has allowed one earned run or fewer in each of his last seven starts, and his 1.78 ERA and 0.85 WHIP (across 96 innings) are both third best in the National League among qualified starters. He's in line to start against the Tigers on the road next week.

Pirates' David Bednar: Collects 10th save
Bednar earned the save against the Cubs on Friday after tossing a perfect 10th inning.
Bednar was brought in for the 10th frame to protect the Pirates' 2-1 lead and took care of the top of the Cubs' order on just 13 pitches (11 strikes). He's recorded a save in four of his last five outings and has converted all 10 save opportunities this season. Bednar has a 3.42 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 33:5 K:BB across 23.2 innings this season.

Pirates' Endy Rodriguez: Shifted to 60-day IL
The Pirates transferred Rodriguez (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Friday.
The move makes room on the Pirates' 40-man roster for Michael Darrell-Hicks, who was claimed off waivers from the Angels and optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis. Rodriguez landed on the 10-day injured list June 7 due to right elbow inflammation, and his move to the 60-day IL means he'll be out of major-league action until at least early August. With Rodriguez and Joey Bart (concussion) both sidelined, Henry Davis will continue to operate as the Pirates' top catcher while Brett Sullivan serves as the backup.
