Nuggets' Russell Westbrook: To decline player option

According to NBA reporter Marc Stein, Westbrook (hand) will decline his $3.5 million player option for the 2025-26 season.
Westbrook, who is currently recovering from right hand surgery, is expected to be a full go ahead of training camp. In his first season with Denver, the veteran guard compiled averages of 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 three-pointers on 44.9 percent from the field across 75 regular-season contests. Westbrook will be turning 37 in November and will likely be looking to latch on with a contender.

Westbrook announced Tuesday that he will undergo right hand surgery, Law Murray of The Athletic reports.
Westbrook said he is undergoing surgery to address two breaks that happened during the season. The veteran guard managed to suit up in 75 regular-season games despite these injuries, averaging 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 three-pointers on 44.9 percent from the field. Westbrook holds a $3.47 million player option for 2025-26 and should be a full go for training camp.

Westbrook played through a right hand sprain Sunday but had another disappointing showing. In his last four postseason games, Westbrook averaged just 6.0 points while shooting 23.5 percent from the field. He did have a productive regular season, however, as he appeared in 75 games with 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.3 three-pointers on 44.9 percent from the field. Westbrook (hand) is available for Sunday's Game 7 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the Thunder.
As expected, Westbrook has been upgraded from probable to available. After playing at least 20 minutes in eight straight playoff contests, Westbrook saw only 17 in Denver's comeback win in Game 6. Aaron Gordon (hamstring) will also suit up for Game 7 but is dealing with a fairly significant injury, so if he's not 100 percent and faces restrictions, Westbrook would be a candidate for increased usage.

Westbrook was limited to 17 minutes off the bench in the Game 6 victory Thursday. Still, even if the veteran floor general landed on the injury report, the probable tag suggests he should be able to suit up. The Nuggets need him to be at his best Sunday, especially if Aaron Gordon (hamstring) ends up being ruled out.

Westbrook has comfortably led the Denver second unit in minutes played during the playoffs, but he's had his struggles recently, and the team turned to Julian Strawther, who responded with 15 points in 20 minutes. Jamal Murray played through an illness, Aaron Gordon may have tweaked his hamstring and Michael Porter continues to push through his shoulder issue, so the Nuggets will be hoping that Westbrook can turn things around quickly.

After starting this series with a couple of strong games, Westbrook has struggled mightily in three straight outings. He went a combined 6-for-27 from the field in that span, averaging 6.0 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.0 three-pointers. He continues to comfortably lead all reserves in minutes played, however.
