Nets' Dariq Whitehead: Recalled from G League
The Nets recalled Whitehead from the G League's Long Island Nets on Tuesday, Erik Slater of ClutchPoints.com reports.
Whitehead played 21 minutes for Long Island in Monday's 105-98 win over the Greensboro Swarm, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. With two G League appearances under his belt, Whitehead appears to have reached the finish line in his recovery from the follow-up procedure he required on his right foot in June, shortly before the Nets selected him in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft. The Duke product could get the chance to make his NBA debut Tuesday against the Magic, though he may only see action if the game turns non-competitive.

Nets' Dariq Whitehead: Will miss preseason opener
Whitehead (foot) has been ruled out for Monday's preseason opener against the Lakers, Evan Barnes of the Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.
Whitehead has been limited to begin training camp while working his way back from offseason foot surgery. The rookie was a heralded high school recruit, but he fell down draft boards due to a lingering foot injury during his lone season at Duke. It's unclear when Whitehead will be cleared for game action, but the Nets will presumably be cautious, meaning the No. 22 overall pick doesn't have much fantasy value to open the 2023-24 campaign.

Nets' Dariq Whitehead: Taking things day by day
Whitehead (foot) said Monday that he's not cleared for 5-on-5 yet, but he's taking things day by day, Evan Barnes of The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports.
Whitehead, who was hampered by foot injuries during his lone campaign at Duke in 2022-23, underwent surgery at the beginning of June to correct the issues. The Nets took a calculated risk when selecting the former heralded high school recruit with the 19th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and will likely be cautious with the youngster during his rookie campaign. When healthy, it wouldn't be surprising to see Whitehead get an extended look in the G League before he's given a chance to carve out a rotational role with Brooklyn.

Nets' Dariq Whitehead: Doing well in recovery
Whitehead said Sunday that his rehab from June 7 right foot surgery is "going great," though he wasn't willing to offer a timeline for his return to full basketball activities, Brian Lewis of the New York Post reports.
Though Whitehead was slowed by foot issues throughout his freshman season at Duke in 2022-23 and eventually required surgery in June -- a revision of a previous operation for a fifth metatarsal Jones fracture -- his checkered health record didn't deter the Nets from selecting him with the No. 22 overall pick in the draft. The 19-year-old wing was a heralded recruit coming out of high school and was touted by many analysts as a likely top-five selection in the 2023 draft heading into his lone season of college, so the Nets were willing to take a gamble on Whitehead's upside in spite of his lingering foot concerns. Shortly after Whitehead was drafted, the Nets relayed that they expect the rookie first-round pick to be fully cleared for training camp, and his own optimism about his recovery from surgery suggests that a return for camp remains realistic.

Nets' Dariq Whitehead: Goes No. 22 to Brooklyn
Whitehead (foot) was selected by the Nets with the No. 22 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Considered the top prospect in the high school class of 2022 by some evaluators, Whitehead arrived at Duke with high expectations but ultimately struggled through an injury-plagued freshman season. Whitehead saw action in 28 games but made only seven starts, posting averages of 8.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.5 made threes (42.9% 3Pt) in 20.6 minutes per game. The injuries ultimately made Whitehead a difficult evaluation, but there's no question the Nets landed a high-level talent for this spot in the draft. Whitehead underwent surgery on his foot in May and could miss Summer League but is expected to be ready for the start of the 2023-24 NBA season.
