Panthers Notebook: First look at depth chart
The depth chart is out and Steve Smith was held out of Wednesday's practice with a bruised knee. A minor roster move and a angry scolding from coach Ron Rivera wrap up an eventful couple of days at camp.
First look at depth chart: The Panthers released their first depth chart of the preseason. Among the highlights -- K Olindo Mare is listed ahead of Justin Medlock, and P Nick Harris is ahead of Brad Nortman. LB Luke Kuechly, the team’s first-round draft pick, is listed on the second team at weakside LB, behind Thomas Davis. The CBSSports.com depth chart, which projects starters based on who has been playing with the first team in practice, has Kuechly and Nortman on the first team.
Other position battle updates: Coach Ron Rivera said Brandon LaFell would be his starting WR, and the depth chart confirms that. David Gettis and Armanti Edwards are listed on the second team. Newly acquired Louis Murphy isn’t listed. At FS, Sherrod Martin is ahead of Haruki Nakamura.
Steve Smith bangs knee: WR Steve Smith left Tuesday’s practice after suffering a bruised left knee. “He’s fine,” coach Ron Rivera told the media afterward. Smith was held out of Wednesday’s practice.
Roster move: G Justin Wells, a rookie free agent, was added to the team’s roster and practiced on Wednesday morning. He replaced WR Hubert Anyiam, who was waived.
Improve your effort: Rivera stopped practice Wednesday morning and had the team huddle around him for an on-field scolding. Rivera wasn’t happy with the intensity level and let the players know it. The Panthers appeared to be more inspired for the rest of practice.
