Top James Hanna News

  • James Hanna: Retiring from football

Hanna was placed on the Cowboys' reserved/retired list Friday due to lingering knee injuries, Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Hanna signed a three-year deal with the Cowboys back in 2016, and the tight end went on to miss all of that next season after undergoing knee surgery. The lingering problems from that injury are now cutting Hanna's career short. Hanna appeared in all 16 games for Dallas last season and started in eight, but he caught just four passes for 88 yards. Jason Witten will obviously continue to operate as the team's starting tight end, but there are now serious questions as to who will be backing him up.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Makes little impact in 2017

Hanna finished the regular season with four catches on nine targets for 88 yards and his first career NFL touchdown.

The fifth-year tight end's blocking skill and contributions on special teams have kept him in the No. 2 spot on the Cowboys depth chart, but it's a role that's offered little fantasy upside behind Jason Witten. With Witten set to return in 2018 and young TEs like Rico Gathers pushing for snaps, Hanna isn't likely to see his usage in the passing game increase next season.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Suiting up for Week 15

Hanna (knee) is listed as active for Sunday's game against the Raiders, David Helman of the Cowboys' official site reports.

Hanna is listed as the Cowboys No. 2 tight end but has done hardly any damage in the passing game this year. He will help boost Dallas' run game against the Raiders.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Uncertain for Week 15

Hanna (knee) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Raiders, David Helman of the Cowboys' official site reports.

The backup tight end put forth only a pair of limited practices this week while battling the knee issue. If Hanna gains clearance to play in Week 15, he won't see much involvement in the passing game. He's caught just two passes through 13 contests this season.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Gets into end zone Sunday

Hanna caught his only target for a 28-yard touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Rams.

It was his first catch of the season, after Hanna failed to even receive a target in the first three games. He's a stout blocker, but his role as a receiver will remain very limited behind Jason Witten.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Returns to practice Monday

Hanna (groin) returned to practice Monday, Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram reports.

Hanna returned to practice Monday following a groin injury that had been bothering him for a few days. Hanna remains stuck behind teammate Jason Witten on the team's depth chart but could find himself enjoying a bigger role this season if he stays healthy.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Not practicing due to groin injury

Hanna (groin) did not practice Thursday, The Dallas Morning News reports.

Hanna sat out of the Hall of Fame Game with a knee injury, and now he's day-to-day with a new groin injury. He's currently behind Jason Witten in the depth chart, and getting on the field for Saturday's preseason game would help him solidify that position.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Will be limited Thursday

Hanna (knee) isn't expected to play much Thursday, Nick Eatman of the Cowboys' team website reports.

Hanna hasn't played a snap since the 2015 season due to two knee surgeries in that span. However, there shouldn't be much reason to worry since Dallas is resting a lot of its starters for the first preseason game. Don't expect the 28-year-old tight end to take over Jason Witten's spot, but he will be a solid No. 2 for the time being -- not enough for true fantasy relevance, though.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Limited participant in training camp

Hanna (knee) is limited at the start of training camp, Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports.

Hanna is looking to bounce back from a pair of knee surgeries and could be a regular on the injury report the rest of the summer. Fortunately, there doesn't seem to be any concern over his availability for the start of the regular season.

  • Cowboys' James Hanna: Not expected to return until training camp

Hanna (knee) is not expected to return to team activities until training camp, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.

Hanna underwent a second surgery in November to repair a knee injury he sustained last summer. The team does not anticipate him participating in any organized team activities until training camp commences. Barring any setbacks, he appears to be on track to be healthy prior to the 2017 season kicking off.
