  • Chiefs' Blaine Gabbert: Landing in Kansas City

Kansas City is slated to sign Gabbert, Pat McAfee of the Pat McAfee Show reports. With Chad Henne retiring after the team's Super Bowl win over the Eagles, Kansas City was in the market for a veteran backup to Patrick Mahomes. Gabbert fits the bill after serving as Tom Brady's No. 2 in Tampa Bay. The 33-year-old Gabbert hasn't started a game since the 2018 season with the Titans.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Could play behind Brady in Week 18

Head coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday that Gabbert will be the next man up at quarterback if Tom Brady comes out of Sunday's matchup against Atlanta early, Scott Smith of the Buccaneers' official site reports. Tampa Bay is locked into the fourth seed for the NFC playoffs, so while Brady will start, it's expected that the 45-year-old won't play the entire game. If that's the case, Gabbert will be the next man up, while Bowles also mentioned that Kyle Trask is likely to be active and may see action when Brady and Gabbert are taken out.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Wraps up solid preseason

Gabbert completed five of seven attempts for 46 yards in the Buccaneers' 27-10 preseason loss to the Colts on Saturday night. Gabbert was the second quarterback in with Tom Brady making his preseason debut, and the veteran backup was able to helm a nine-play, 81-yard scoring march that culminated in a Ke'Shawn Vaughn one-yard touchdown run. Gabbert saw action in all three exhibitions and was efficient in each one, and he'll open the season in the familiar and typically low-volume role of backing up the highly durable Brady.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Will start vs. Titans

Gabbert will start Saturday's preseason contest against the Titans, Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Gabbert entered last weekend's exhibition matchup against the Bengals after Tom Brady handled a single series, but the journeyman veteran will officially get the start Saturday. After Gabbert, who looks set to reprise his role as Brady's primary backup during the regular season, Ryan Griffin and rookie Kyle Trask also stand to see some action.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Back as Brady's backup

Gabbert re-signed Wednesday with the Buccaneers on a one-year, $2.5 million contract, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports. The Buccaneers continue their efforts to maintain roster continuity by bringing back Gabbert for another season as the No. 2 option behind Tom Brady. The 31-year-old's only action last season came in a Week 16 thrashing of the Lions, when Brady went to the bench for the second half. Unless things take an unexpected turn for the defending Super Bowl champions during the 2021 campaign, Gabbert will once again be in store for limited action.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Limited action behind Brady

Gabbert completed nine of 16 passes for 143 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions across four games during the 2020 regular season. He also rushed nine times for 16 yards and committed a fumble that was recovered by the offense. All of Gabbert's passing production came in a Week 16 evisceration of the Lions, when Tom Brady took an early seat and the veteran backup took over in the second half. Gabbert only attempted one other pass all season, an incompletion in Week 6 against the Packers. The 31-year-old played 2020 on a one-year deal, but given his familiarity with coach Bruce Arians' system and the reasonable salary he'd command, it's likely Gabbert returns to the Buccaneers' fold in 2021.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Sharp in backup duty

Gabbert entered the Buccaneers' 47-7 win over the Lions on Saturday to start the second half and completed nine of 15 attempts for 143 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He also rushed twice for 15 yards and fumbled once but recovered. The veteran signal-caller was afforded a rare opportunity for extended action due to the blowout nature of the victory, and he looked to be in full command of an offensive system he knows very well. Gabbert got valuable work in with the first-team pass-catching corps as well, connecting with Rob Gronkowski and Mike Evans for touchdown passes of 25 and 22 yards, respectively. Gabbert could certainly see additional game action in Week 7 against the Saints since the Buccaneers clinched a playoff spot with Saturday's win.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: No. 2 quarterback behind Tom Brady

Gabbert is not among Tampa Bay's inactive players for Sunday's matchup against the Panthers, per the Buccaneers' official Twitter account. With Ryan Griffin among the Buccaneers' list of inactives for Week 2, Gabbert is expected to serve as the emergency option at quarterback. The No. 10 overall draft choice from 2011 will be thrust into game action should Tom Brady suffer an injury.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Sharp in Wednesday's practice

Gabbert served as the first-team quarterback in Wednesday's practice with Tom Brady getting a veteran's day off, putting together a productive session while connecting with a wide array of pass-catchers, Carmen Vitali of the team's official site reports. Among the veterans, Gabbert and fellow signal-caller Ryan Griffin are arguably in contention for most anonymous/forgotten skill players on the Buccaneers roster, considering who they're battling to back up. However, Gabbert had a prime opportunity to make his case for the job Wednesday in Brady's absence, and the 30-year-old took advantage by connecting with the likes of Scotty Miller, O.J. Howard, Cameron Brate, Justin Watson and LeSean McCoy during the session. Gabbert was slated to serve as Jameis Winston's primary backup last season before suffering a preseason shoulder injury that knocked him out for the season, and the battle between he and Griffin to serve as Brady's No. 2 could come down to the wire this summer.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Slated to back up Brady

The Buccaneers have signed Gabbert to a one-year deal, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Gabbert, who landed on IR last September due to a shoulder injury, is back with the Bucs, presumably healthy and now in line to work behind new QB Tom Brady. The No. 10 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft last saw regular-season action in 2018, appearing in eight games (including three starts) with the Titans.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Still not practicing

Gabbert (shoulder) didn't participate in Tuesday's practice, Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Gabbert hasn't practiced since dislocating his shoulder Aug. 23. He still has time to get on the field at least in a limited capacity by Friday, but he's trending toward being out for Week 3's game versus the Giants. Ryan Griffin will continue being Jameis Winston's backup for the extent of Gabbert's injury.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: No practice Tuesday

Gabbert (shoulder) didn't participate in Tuesday's practice. This is the second straight day Gabbert has missed practice, and it's becoming increasingly unlikely he plays in Thursday's game versus the Panthers. Ryan Griffin will back up Jameis Winston if Gabbert can't go.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: No practice Thursday

Gabbert (shoulder) is not practicing Thursday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Gabbert is managing a shoulder injury and has now missed two consecutive practices. The veteran quarterback projects to serve as the top backup to Jameis Winston when healthy, though Ryan Griffin will carry that responsibility until Gabbert fully recovers.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Sits out Wednesday's practice

Gabbert (shoulder) missed Wednesday's practice, Greg Auman of The Athletic reports. Gabbert initially wasn't expected to be ready for the season opener versus the 49ers, so his absence from practice early in the week is in line with that claim. Still, the team expects him to back up Jameis Winston for a better part of the season, but Ryan Griffin will take over that role until Gabbert's ready.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Highly likely to miss opener

General manager Jason Licht describes Gabbert (shoulder) as "iffy" for Week 1 but expects him to be ready to return very early into the season, Jenna Laine of ESPN.com reports. Licht went on to praise Gabbert's toughness and seems to have full confidence the veteran quarterback will be ready to serve as the primary backup to Jameis Winston in relatively short order. The fact Gabbert's shoulder dislocation is on his non-throwing arm certainly helps matters, but the fact the team's general manager is seemingly guaranteeing a roster spot for Gabbert is interesting considering how well fellow quarterback Ryan Griffin played this preseason.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Outplayed by Griffin in win

Gabbert completed five of 12 passes for 42 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions and rushed once for six yards in the Buccaneers' 16-14 preseason win over the Dolphins on Friday. Gabbert checked in on the second series of the game and quickly saw the possession short-circuited by an Andre Ellington fumble. However, the veteran couldn't help the Buccaneers get anything going over the next two drives either before finally managing a choppy 11-play, 36-yard march later in the second quarter that culminated in a field goal. Of additional concern for Gabbert's job prospects is the fact fellow backup Ryan Griffin put together an appreciably better stat line for the second time in as many preseason games. With only two exhibitions remaining, the veteran is fighting for his roster spot despite his prior experience in coach Bruce Arians' offense.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Solid in brief action

Gabbert completed six of eight passes for 50 yards in the Buccaneers' 30-28 preseason loss to the Steelers on Friday. Gabbert played only the third series of the game, but he helmed a 13-play, 73-yard march that ended with the Buccaneers giving up the ball on downs at the Steelers' 17-yard line. The veteran then ceded the rest of the game to his competition for the No. 2 job, Ryan Griffin, who was impressive while passing for 330 yards and a touchdown. The battle for the No. 2 job behind Jameis Winston could well come down to the wire, and there's a likelihood Gabbert perhaps logs multiple series in next Friday's second preseason contest versus the Dolphins.

  • Buccaneers' Blaine Gabbert: Joining Arians in Tampa

Gabbert is signing with the Buccaneers, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Gabbert was released by the Titans on March 15 after the team traded for Ryan Tannehill as its new backup to Marcus Mariota. The 29-year-old quarterback now will be reunited with Bucs coach Bruce Arians, who oversaw an ugly five-week stretch from Gabbert late in the 2017 season with Arizona. The Buccaneers will let Gabbert duke it out with Ryan Griffin for the No. 2 quarterback job behind Jameis WInston.

  • Titans' Blaine Gabbert: Can't provide enough in loss

Gabbert completed 18 of 29 pass attempts for 165 yards, a touchdown and a pair of interceptions in Sunday's 33-17 loss to the Colts. The Titans asked Gabbert to save their season with Marcus Mariota (elbow) unable to play, but the veteran backup was stifled by the Colts' underrated defense. The 29-year-old spent most of the night hitting his check-down options, which shouldn't come as a surprise given his "game-manager" style. When he was asked to bring the team back from behind, that's when things got ugly. One of his interceptions was especially poor, as it was nowhere near his intended target and hit a Colt defender in the chest. Gabbert definitely looked like a backup in this one, and that is likely to be his ceiling next season.

  • Titans' Blaine Gabbert: Sticks in backup role

Gabbert will remain the Titans' backup quarterback for Monday's game against the Texans with starter Marcus Mariota (neck) avoiding an injury designation heading into the contest, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Gabbert looked like a candidate for his second start of the season in Week 12 after Mariota exited last weekend's loss to the Colts with what appeared to be an elbow injury. Mariota had previously missed his lone start due to a nerve issue with his throwing elbow, but he received positive news after the Week 11 contest when it was revealed that he was dealing with a neck stinger that was unrelated to his previous injury. The signal-caller proved his health by turning in full practices Friday and Saturday, leaving Gabbert to fill his familiar role as the No. 2 option.
