Even if Beathard were forced into action for the Jaguars, he wouldn't hold much Fantasy value outside of the deeper two-QB leagues with no rushing profile and no history of Fantasy production.

  • Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Gains clearance

Beathard (groin) was cleared to practice Sunday according to head coach Doug Pederson, Mark Long of the Associated Press reports. Beathard was carted off the field during an early June minicamp practice, and has been out or limited since. The 28-year-old was considered the favorite to back up Trevor Lawrence, and he'll now work to regain any lost ground to Jake Luton and Kyle Sloter on those expectations, if any.

  • Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Suffers groin injury

Beathard was carted off the practice field Monday after injuring his groin during practice, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. An MRI is pending to determine the severity of the injury. Beathard is the favorite to be Trevor Lawrence's primary backup in 2022 after occupying that same position in 2021, but that's now up in the air until he gets his imaging results. Jake Luton, whom Jacksonville signed in February after he spent a season on Miami's practice squad, also is on hand for the Jaguars.

  • Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Sent to COVID list

The Jaguars placed Beathard (undisclosed) on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday. Beathard will need to fully clear league protocols before returning to team facilities, which puts his status in doubt for Sunday's season finale against Indianapolis. If Beathard is unavailable Week 18, practice squad signal-caller Danny Etling will stand to bump to the active roster and operate as the top backup to Trevor Lawrence.

  • Jaguars' C.J. Beathard: Brought off COVID list

The Jaguars activated Beathard from the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Mark Long of the Associated Press reports. Beathard missed less than a week of practice while progressing through the league's COVID-19 protocols. He can now resume working as Jacksonville's third quarterback behind Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Named starting QB

Beathard was named the starting quarterback for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Nick Mullens will require season-ending elbow surgery, opening the door for Beathard to make his 11th career start and his first of the season. Beathard entered the game in Mullens' place during last week's loss to the Cowboys, and he completed five of seven passes for 100 yards and a touchdown, a stat line that's slightly skewed by a 49-yard hail mary in the fourth quarter. Over 17 career games, Beathard sports a 1-9 record with a 57.8 completion percentage and 6.9 yards per target. He'll take the field without running back Raheem Mostert (ankle) or wideout Deebo Samuel (hamstring), but George Kittle (foot) has a chance to return this week, according to Josh Dubow of the Associated Press.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Climbs depth chart due to injury

Beathard will be the backup to Nick Mullens for at least the next six weeks, as Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) will miss at least that long due to a high-ankle sprain, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Mullens will get first crack at filling in for Garoppolo, starting with Thursday's game against Green Bay. Beathard will wait in the wings should Mullens struggle, but considering Beathard has usurped Mullens as Garoppolo's backup as recently as earlier this season, the window is wide open for the Iowa product to get another shot under center if things start to go south for San Francisco's offense.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Takes over as starter mid-game

Beathard filled in for a struggling Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) in the second half of Sunday's 43-17 loss to Miami. He completed nine of 18 pass attempts for 94 yards and a touchdown. Beathard has had to relieve a different struggling quarterback ahead of him on the depth chart for the second consecutive week. Unlike last week's late comeback attempt against the Eagles, the backup had a more pedestrian outing when given a full half to operate. Garoppolo clearly did not look right early on, and his injured ankle may have had a big part in why he performed so poorly. It would be a surprising turn of events if an official change was made with both players being healthy, so we have to assume the job is still Garoppolo's after one ugly start.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Finishes third on depth chart

Beathard did not see the field while serving as the 49ers' third-string quarterback in 2019. San Francisco -- in unorthodox fashion -- decided to keep three quarterbacks on its 53-man roster after the team was unable to trade backups Nick Mullens and Beathard during the preseason. This move showed the confidence the coaching staff has in the 26-year-old's abilities as a signal caller. Beathard's 57.3 completion percentage and 12:13 TD:INT ratio came in less-than-ideal conditions, but he has shown to have accuracy on shorter pass attempts with some athleticism as a runner when called upon. Both he and Mullens can be kept around on affordable contracts for 2020, so it will be interesting to see if the team decides to run with three quarterbacks again following a healthy season from starter Jimmy Garoppolo.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Practices Wednesday

Beathard (thumb) participated in Wednesday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Beathard suffered a thumb injury during Saturday's game against the Cowboys, the severity of which kept him sidelined during Tuesday's practice. The third-year quarterback managed to return Wednesday, and will resume competing for the No. 2 quarterback role with Nick Mullens.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Active, but backing up Mullens

Beathard (wrist/thumb) is active for Thursday's game against the Raiders. However, he'll serve as the backup quarterback to fill-in starter Nick Mullens, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. In the wake of a Week 8 loss at Arizona, Beathard suffered from a lacking grip due to wrist and thumb injuries to his right hand. The development opened the door for 2017 undrafted free agent Nick Mullens to take his first NFL snap. That said, the 49ers released journeyman QB Tom Savage on Thursday, which leaves Beathard as the only other signal-caller on the gameday roster.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Viewed as '50-50' for Thursday

Beathard (wrist/thumb), who is listed as questionable for Thursday's game against the Raiders, is considered "truly 50-50" for the contest, a source told Adam Schefter of ESPN. As coach Kyle Shanahan noted earlier this week, the injuries to Beathard's throwing hand are still making it difficult for him to grip the football, a troubling development for a player that has already fumbled five times in six games. The 49ers will presumably wait and see if Beathard's condition has improved at all closer to game time before rendering a decision on his availability, but Nick Mullens -- who has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL -- will direct the offense if Beathard isn't deemed fit to play. An official call on Beathard's status will likely come around 6:50 p.m. EDT, when the 49ers will release their inactive list approximately 90 minutes before kickoff.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Status still murky for Week 9

Beathard acknowledged Wednesday that his right wrist and thumb "are kind of messed up," casting some doubt on his availability for Thursday's game against the Raiders, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated Tuesday that Beathard's two injuries have affected the quarterback's ability to grip the football. It appears the second-year signal-caller hasn't demonstrated much progress a day later. The 49ers should provide an update on Beathard's condition as well as an official injury designation for the game following Wednesday's practice, but it's looking more and more likely that the 23-year-old will be sidelined for Week 9. If that's the case, Nick Mullens would likely pick up the start in what would amount to his first meaningful NFL action, while veteran Tom Savage would be on hand as the No. 2 quarterback.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Status for Week 9 in question

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday that Beathard (wrist) is struggling to hold a football, which is threatening his availability for Thursday's game against the Raiders, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. Beathard emerged from Sunday's loss at Arizona with a wrist injury. A decision on Beathard likely will come down to the wire, per Shanahan, but the quarterback is missing back-to-back practices to kick off Week 9 prep, according to Inman. Nick Mullens is the next man up at quarterback in San Francisco.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Commits three turnovers versus Rams

Beathard completed 15 of 27 pass attempts for 170 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions during Sunday's 39-10 loss to the Rams. He also carried two times for 13 yards and lost a fumble. Beathard completed just over half the passes he attempted while recording a season low in yardage. His turnovers prevented his team from ever climbing back in the game, including one just before halftime and another in the third quarter that set up a Rams touchdown. Beathard has been a turnover machine since assuming the starting job, throwing seven interceptions to go along with three fumbles in four games. He'll look to improve that aspect of his game next Sunday against the Cardinals.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Throws two touchdowns in loss

Beathard completed 16 of 23 passes for 245 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in Monday night's 33-30 loss to the Packers. Beathard enjoyed a great start at Lambeau Field, tossing two touchdowns from 30-plus yards. With Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) injured, Beathard figures to lead the 49ers for the remainder of this season, and has now thrown for two touchdowns in three straight games. While his five interceptions over that same span are cause for concern, Beathard has proven a decent fill-in option for San Francisco while its franchise signal-caller is sidelined.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Throws two touchdowns in loss

Beathard completed 23 of 37 pass attempts for 298 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in Sunday's 29-27 loss to the Chargers. He added 19 yards on seven carries. Although he can't count on 82-yard touchdowns to the tight end every week, Beathard was surprisingly solid in his first start in place of Jimmy Garoppolo (knee), including a touchdown drive on San Francisco's second possession of the day. The 23-year-old will need to take better care of the ball going forward, however, as his career 6:8 touchdown-to-interception ratio leaves much to be desired. Still, this performance leaves plenty of room for optimism regarding the 49ers offense as a whole as they prepare to host Arizona in Week 5.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Confirmed as starter

Head coach Kyle Shanahan affirmed that "C.J.'s our guy" following the announcement that Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) will undergo season-ending surgery, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Beathard was already expected to start next week against the Chargers, and he will take over for the rest of the year after Garoppolo was diagnosed with a torn ACL. The 23-year-old will have big shoes to fill, but it is worth noting he was hand-picked by San Francisco's current regime in the 2017 draft as the quarterback of the future before the team acquired Garoppolo midseason. Beathard posted 1,430 passing yards (55 completion percentage) with four touchdowns and six interceptions while starting six games during his rookie campaign. The signal caller also displayed above-average athleticism with 136 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 26 attempts over that span. It wouldn't be surprising to see the sophomore build on last season's totals with an improved offensive line and an extra year in Shanahan's system under his belt, but he is certainly a downgrade in comparison to Garoppolo.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Likely in line for starting assignment

Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed confidence in Beathard as his potential starting quarterback moving forward in the wake of the potential season-ending knee injury suffered Sunday by Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. Beathard figures to get the call Week 4 versus the Chargers at a minimum, with the high likelihood he's needed for much longer than that if Garoppolo has suffered a torn ACL as currently feared. Beathard was serviceable after being thrown into the No. 1 job during his rookie 2017 campaign, compiling between 201 and 294 yards in five of six starts while generating a 4:6 TD:INT. The Iowa product also displayed impressive mobility, rushing for more than 20 yards in three of his starts. Beathard will have a solid group of weapons to work with if he does take the reins of the offense, with Marquise Goodwin, Matt Breida and George Kittle particularly offering game-breaking upside, and the likes of Pierre Garcon and Alfred Morris serving as steady veteran assets. More definitive information on Garoppolo's status -- and by extension, Beathard's -- should be revealed at some point Monday.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Returns in limited capacity

Beathard (knee/hip) was limited in practice Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports. A mere spectator Wednesday, Beathard was present during the portion of Thursday's session open to the media, per Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News. Beathard must participate both Thursday and Friday in order to serve as Jimmy Garoppolo's backup Sunday in Chicago. As a result, Friday's injury report will provide the final word on Beathard's Week 13 availability. In the event Beathard doesn't get the all-clear, the 49ers can elevate undrafted rookie Nick Mullens from the practice squad.

  • 49ers' C.J. Beathard: Bruises knee, strains hip

Beathard sustained a bruised knee and strained hip during Sunday's 24-13 loss to the Seahawks, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. "It was good news, nothing serious or long-term," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. "We'll look into it more tomorrow." Under the direction of Beathard, the 49ers have averaged a meager 16.3 points per game across six appearances, but Shanahan has nonetheless been pleased by his improvement from week to week. Having the confidence of his boss is likely one reason Beathard has been able to fend off Jimmy Garoppolo for as long as he has. The double whammy of ailments could turn the quarterback depth chart on its head, at least in the short term, if Beathard isn't able to practice this week. Expect a decision to come down from Shanahan by Wednesday regarding the starter for this Sunday's game at Chicago.
