The Georgia product's most recent in-game NFL action came in 2021 with the Giants, throwing for 210 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions over three contests. He's expected to compete for a depth role in Detroit's QB room as the offseason progresses.

Fromm had been on Washington's practice squad all season, and he hasn't gotten into a regular-season NFL game since 2021. The Commanders announced a quarterback change from Sam Howell to Jacoby Brissett mid-week, but Brissett has since picked up a hamstring injury and is a game-time call for Sunday's contest versus San Francisco. If Brissett is unable to suit up in the Week 17 matchup, Fromm figures to serve as Howell's backup.

• Giants' Jake Fromm: In line for Week 18 start

  Fromm is lined up to serve as the Giants' starting quarterback for Sunday's season finale against Washington after head coach Joe Judge said Monday that Mike Glennon (wrist) won't be available, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports. Glennon is headed for surgery on his left (non-throwing) wrist, an injury the veteran signal-caller picked up during his dreadful four-completion, four-turnover outing in the 29-3 loss to the Bears in Week 17. The Giants swapped back to Glennon for the Week 17 contest after Fromm struggled mightily in his first career start against the Eagles in Week 16, when he completed six of 17 attempts for 25 yards and one interception before being benched midway through the third quarter. Glennon showed last week that the floor for the New York passing attack can be even lower, but Fromm's initial start doesn't offer much evidence that he'll be a dramatically better option. Even if the game versus Washington starts to turn non-competitive in the second half, it wouldn't be surprising if the Giants leaned heavily on the ground attack rather than relying on Fromm's arm to grind out first downs.

• Giants' Jake Fromm: Likely to start over Glennon

  The Giants are planning to have Fromm make his first career start in Sunday's game in Philadelphia, though head coach Joe Judge has yet to formally appoint the 23-year-old for the nod, Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports. Judge said Monday that both Fromm and Mike Glennon -- who went 0-3 while starting each of the past three contests -- would both be evaluated in practices Wednesday through Friday before a Week 16 starter was named, but all signs point to the second-year signal-caller out of Georgia directing the offense. According to Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News, Fromm was the first quarterback to take reps at Thursday's practice, which suggests the Giants are ready to give his first extended trial at the NFL level. Fromm made his professional debut in relief of a struggling Glennon in last week's loss to the Cowboys, completing six of 12 passes for 82 yards. Because Fromm has been with the organization for less than a month, the Giants presumably will simplify the game plan and lean heavily on the ground attack Sunday, so long as the game script allows for it. As such, Fromm likely won't have much appeal outside of fantasy leagues that start two quarterbacks or have a super flex spot.

The potential existed for Fromm to earn his first NFL action with Glennon subject to an examination from an independent neurologist in order to play this weekend. Instead, Glennon will get a second spot start for Daniel Jones, who hasn't been cleared for contact as he deals with a strained neck. As a result, Fromm seemingly is one play away from seeing his initial regular-season snap as a pro after he logged time during the 2021 preseason with the Bills.

  Fromm is expected to prepare for his first NFL start Sunday against the Chargers during practices this week with the statuses of Daniel Jones (neck) and Mike Glennon (concussion) uncertain, Art Stapleton of The Bergen Record reports. After being signed off the Bills' practice squad last Tuesday, Fromm served as the backup to Glennon in Sunday's 20-9 loss to the Dolphins. Though Glennon took every snap in the contest, he was diagnosed with a concussion afterward. While Jones has yet to be cleared for contact and is considered week-to-week, Glennon's status is more up in the air, given the volatile nature of recovery timelines for concussions. At the very least, Glennon seems unlikely to clear the protocol before the Giants resume practicing Wednesday, setting Fromm up to take all the first-team reps to begin the week. The 23-year-old's lone NFL action has come with Buffalo in the 2021 preseason, with Fromm completing 21 of 36 attempts for 172 yards and no touchdowns while taking five sacks. He also added 17 yards and a touchdown on three carries.

Fromm had a decent preseason with a 76.8 QB rating in the finale against the Packers, following a 74.2 QB rating in Preseason Week 1 against the Lions (he only played sparingly in the second preseason game vs. Chicago). He has started to show the poise he always exhibited as a Georgia Bulldog, but in the end the Bills decided to enter the regular season with just Josh Allen and Mitchell Trubisky. There's a decent chance Fromm has a spot on the practice squad waiting for him, though we'd also guess he could be a decent waiver-wire target for a team looking for a QB project.

  Fromm did not practice with his teammates Wednesday as part of a planned social distancing schedule, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports. Nothing is wrong with Fromm, but the Bills' major fear -- which is the same as a lot of other teams -- is that an entire quarterbacks room would be ineligible if COVID-19 makes its way though the group and the team would be forced to start an emergency (and unprepared) quarterback in a given week. The Bills and a lot of other teams plan on doing this periodically so someone like Fromm would likely be virus-free should the team's top two quarterbacks not be cleared to play.

  Fromm signed his rookie contract with the Bills on Friday, Field Yates of ESPN reports. The former Georgia quarterback is now under contract for the next four years in Buffalo. Josh Allen is the face of the franchise and only entering his third year, so Fromm will serve as a backup and developmental quarterback for the Bills, though how he fits in with Matt Barkley -- a guy that works well with Allen -- in the same room remains to be seen. We could see the Bills keeping three quarterbacks and the Fromm beginning his career as the No. 3 option.
