Saints' Cam Akers: Gets chance with Saints
The Saints signed Akers to a contract Friday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports.
In his fifth NFL campaign in 2024, Akers split time between the Texans and Vikings, recording 104 carries for 444 yards (4.3 YPC) and two touchdowns and 14 catches (on 18 targets) for 68 yards and three more TDs. He entered the offseason as an unrestricted free agent and went without much interest until New Orleans' mandatory minicamp this week, when he worked out for the team. Akers showed enough to earn another opportunity, but he joins a crowded backfield behind No. 1 option Alvin Kamara along with Kendre Miller and rookie sixth-rounder Devin Neal.

Akers will attend the Saints' minicamp practices as a tryout in the upcoming week, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Akers split the 2024 season between the Vikings and Texans, accounting for 104 total carries. He hasn't received much known interest this offseason, though the Saints have a relatively undefined depth chart behind Alvin Kamara. Kendre Miller was a third-round pick in 2023 but hasn't established himself, while Devin Neal was just a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Vikings' Cam Akers: Productive in backup role
Akers had five carries for 39 yards in Minnesota's wild-card-round loss to the Rams. He finished the season with 104 carries for 444 yards rushing, 14 receptions for 68 yards and five total touchdowns.
Akers played the first five games of the season with Houston (amassing 147 yards rushing) and was traded to the Vikings where he initially was third string. He soon overtook Ty Chandler as the backup to Aaron Jones and had a productive second half of the season. Akers showed some big-play ability with 232 yards rushing, 48 yards receiving and three touchdowns in his last eight games. He becomes an unrestricted free agent after the season, but the Vikings would seem likely to want to bring him back considering they've traded for him in consecutive seasons.

Akers (illness) is listed as active for Monday's wild-card game against the Rams.
Akers wasn't able to practice Saturday due to an illness, which left him questionable for the Vikings' playoff opener. Despite the ailment, he'll be able to suit up Monday and serve as the primary backup to starting RB Aaron Jones, which has amounted to 6.2 touches for 29.1 yards from scrimmage per game and three total TDs in 12 appearances for Minnesota this season.
