  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Operating as No. 2 quarterback

Mullens is active for Sunday's game against the Texans. For the third week in a row to open the season, Mullens will suit up as the No. 2 quarterback ahead of Brett Rypien, who is inactive as an emergency third option. With rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy (knee) lost for the season, Mullens should continue to dress as the top backup to starter Sam Darnold throughout the 2024 campaign.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Tosses TD in Saturday's start

Mullens completed 11 of 21 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's 27-12 preseason win over the Browns. None of the Vikings' starters were on the field Saturday, and even some key reserves like Ty Chandler sat out, but Mullens still put together a decent line while playing with backups for the entire first half. With rookie J.J. McCarthy (knee) out for the season, Mullens will provide Minnesota with an experienced backup to Sam Darnold at quarterback -- and Darnold's track record at least offers the possibility that he will play his way out of another starting job, opening the door for Mullens to take over the offense.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Back in starting role

Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Wednesday that Mullens will start Sunday's season finale against the Lions. As Minnesota's quarterback carousel continues to spin, it has landed back on Mullens for the season finale. Mullens played the entire second half of the team's Week 17 loss to the Packers after the Vikings' curious decision to start rookie Jaren Hall backfired. In two previous starts this season, Mullens threw for an impressive 714 yards and four touchdowns but also had six interceptions.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Finishes second half of blowout

Mullens completed 13 of 22 pass attempts for 113 yards and a touchdown with a six-yard rush in Sunday's 33-10 loss to Green Bay. Rookie Jaren Hall struggled to the tune of no touchdowns and two turnovers in his first career start, so head coach Kevin O'Connell switched back to Mullens at the beginning of the second half. The veteran signal-caller didn't give the offense a significant makeover, but he certainly produced the more fantasy-friendly half Sunday. O'Connell stated after the game that he has not committed to a starting quarterback for Minnesota's regular-season finale against Detroit, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert. The more-experienced Mullens would be the logical choice for the 8-8 Vikings, as their playoff hopes (while slim) are still alive. Mullens also represents the option with the higher fantasy upside after he threw two touchdowns and committed four turnovers in a narrow loss to Detroit when the two teams met in Week 16.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Moves back to No. 2 QB

Coach Kevin O'Connell named Jaren Hall the Vikings' starting quarterback for Sunday's contest against the Packers, with Mullens serving as the No. 2 option at the position, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports. Following Kirk Cousins' season-ending Achilles tear back in Week 8, Minnesota has cycled through three different quarterbacks, with Mullens getting the call the last two games. While Mullens filled the stat sheet (48-for-69 passing for 714 yards and four touchdowns), he also tossed six interceptions in losses at Cincinnati and to the Lions. With Hall back in the top job, Mullens could have been demoted to No. 3 on the QB depth chart, but O'Connell will stick with him as the primary backup over Joshua Dobbs.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Adds/Streamers (QB Preview)

The Packers have been lit up by opposing QBs over the past five weeks with Baker Mayfield and Bryce Young being the most recent. Mullens struggled with interceptions last week but still scored 20 Fantasy points for the second-consecutive week. The Vikings have consistently gotten great Fantasy production out of whoever they have put under center. As a unit they're averaging 21 FPPG, which would rank as QB11 on the season. As long as Mullens is the starter, he's in play as a high-end QB2.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Week 17 Waiver Priority List

Mullens struggled in Week 16 against Detroit with four interceptions, but he also passed for 411 yards and two touchdowns. He's now scored at least 20.5 Fantasy points in consecutive games. While he's likely without Jordan Addison (ankle) and T.J. Hockenson (knee), he's facing a Packers defense in Week 17 that has suddenly become awful at stopping opposing quarterbacks. Baker Mayfield and Bryce Young combined for 63.1 Fantasy points against Green Bay in the past two games, and four quarterbacks in the past six games against the Packers have scored at least 22.2 Fantasy points.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Sleeper QBs

Mullens is a great streaming quarterback to use in Week 16 against Detroit. He just scored 21.1 Fantasy points in his first start for the Vikings in Week 15 at Cincinnati, and he took advantage of playing with great weapons in Justin Jefferson, T.J. Hockenson and Jordan Addison. He should have the chance for another quality outing against the Lions, who are No. 6 in most Fantasy points allowed to opposing quarterbacks, and four of the past six quarterbacks against Detroit have scored at least 23.2 Fantasy points. It wouldn't surprise me if Mullens is a top-10 Fantasy quarterback in Week 16.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Contrarian DFS Play

The main slate is missing Josh Allen, Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, and Brock Purdy this week. In other words, it's a great week to go cheap at QB and Mullens qualifies at just $7,000. This game has the second-highest over-under on the main slate and is being played indoors so weather will not be an issue.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Adds/Streamers (QB Preview)

Despite the fact that they're on their fourth QB, the Vikings rank seventh in both passing yards and passing touchdowns this season. That's partially because they rank fourth in pass attempts and partially because their trio of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson is one of the most talented in the league. Mullens is competent enough to produce 20 Fantasy points with this crew and the Lions provide a good matchup to do it against.

Mullens is an excellent streaming option in Week 16.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Named starter for Week 15

Head coach Kevin O'Connell announced Tuesday that Mullens will serve as the Vikings' starting quarterback Saturday in Cincinnati, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports. Mullens will become the Vikings' fourth different starting quarterback of the season after he came on in relief of a struggling Joshua Dobbs in this past Sunday's 3-0 win over the Raiders. After throwing four interceptions in a 12-10 loss to the Bears in Week 12 prior to the Vikings' bye, Dobbs played turnover-free football Sunday but completed just 10 of 23 passes for 63 yards before being benched in the fourth quarter. Mullens then proceeded to complete nine of 13 passes for 83 yards while directing the Vikings' only scoring drive of the day. Though he will draw his first NFL start since 2021 this Saturday, Mullens possesses ample experience, having made 25 appearances (17 starts) over his seven-year career. He also has plenty of familiarity with O'Connell's system, having been with Minnesota as a backup to Kirk Cousins (Achilles) since the start of the 2022 season.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Back in action Sunday

Mullens (back) is listed as active Sunday in Denver. Mullens spent the past five games on injured reserve, a span in which the Vikings' quarterback room experienced significant turnover. Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 8, Jaren Hall started for him Week 9 and suffered a concussion almost immediately, and recent addition Joshua Dobbs stepped in and led an improbable win against the Falcons. Dobbs is starting a second straight contest Sunday, but Mullens will return as his backup with Hall still in the protocol for head injuries.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Questionable for Sunday at Denver

Mullens (back) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game at the Broncos. Coach Kevin O'Connell said Friday that he is optimistic Mullens will be able to serve as the primary backup to Joshua Dobbs in Week 11, Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com reports. With rookie fifth-rounder Jaren Hall (concussion) already ruled out for Sunday's contest, Mullens currently figures to serve as the Vikings' signal caller should anything happen to Dobbs.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Moved to IR with back injury

Mullens (back) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Craig Peters of the Vikings' official site reports. Mullens will be sidelined until at least Week 10 against the Saints. Rookie Jaren Hall will likely step in as Kirk Cousins' backup while Mullens is sidelined, and Minnesota also signed quarterback Sean Mannion to its practice squad Wednesday.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Not suiting up

Mullens (back) is inactive Sunday against the Chiefs. Mullens logged limited practices throughout the week, but he'll be unable to backup Kirk Cousins against Kansas City. Jaren Hall will instead get that opportunity in Week 5.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Limited by back issue

Mullens (back) was a limited participant at practice Thursday, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports. Mullens logged limited participation for the second straight day Thursday, putting his availability for Week 5 in doubt. To avoid carrying an injury designation into the weekend, he'll probably need to practice in full Friday.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Expected to re-sign with Minnesota

Mullens is expected to re-sign with the Vikings, Field Yates of ESPN reports. The Raiders traded Mullens to the Vikings in August last year, and the quarterback served as the primary backup to Kirk Cousins during the 2022 campaign. The undrafted product out of Southern Mississippi figures to garner a similar role in 2023 if a deal is finalized soon.

  • Vikings' Nick Mullens: Plays second half in win

Mullens completed 11 of 13 passes for 116 yards and one interception during Sunday's 29-13 win against Chicago. Mullens took over in the second half for starter Kirk Cousins who was rested ahead of the playoffs. Mullens largely played with the second- and third-string offense but showed he's at least a steady hand as the backup.
