Lions' Ifeatu Melifonwu: Opens week as DNP
Melifonwu (ankle) did not participate in Wednesday's practice session.
Despite logging three consecutive limited practices last week, Melifonwu was unable to suit up for Week 1 against the Rams. The fact that the 2021 third-round pick wasn't able to practice in any capacity Wednesday doesn't bode well for his chances of playing against the Buccaneers on Sunday. Melifonwu will have two more chances Thursday and Friday to see the field and prepare for Week 2.

Lions' DJ Reader: Seemingly over quadriceps injury
Reader (quadriceps) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
Reader was limited in all three practices leading up to Week 1 against the Rams, but he did not end up suiting up for Sunday's game. His full participation Wednesday indicates that the 2016 fifth-round pick should make his regular-season debut against the Buccaneers in Week 2.

Lions' Marcus Davenport: Dealing with groin injury
Davenport (groin) did not practice Wednesday.
Davenport entered training camp with a clean bill of health after dealing with an ankle injury for most of the 2023 season. He finished Sunday's 26-20 win over the Rams with one tackle, including 0.5 sacks, while playing 46 of 78 defensive snaps. The 2018 first-round pick will work to get back on the practice field Thursday or Friday and prepare for Detroit's Week 2 matchup against Tampa Bay.

Lions' Kerby Joseph: Pops up on injury report
Joseph (knee) did not participate in Wednesday's practice session.
Joseph played 75 of the Lions' 78 defensive snaps in Sunday's 26-20 win over the Rams, and he finished the game with six tackles (three solo) and one interception. The 2022 third-round pick dealt with a lingering hip injury for most of last season, but he still managed to suit up for 15 regular-season games. Joseph's practice participation for Thursday and Friday will be worth monitoring regarding his status for Detroit's Week 2 showdown against Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Strickland (thumb) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
Strickland was unable to suit up for the Lions' regular-season opener due to a thumb injury, but it now appears he's moved past the issue. Expect the 24-year-old to play primarily on special teams as the Lions face the Buccaneers in Week 2.

Lions' Jameson Williams: Dealing with ankle issue
Williams practiced in a limited capacity Wednesday due to an ankle injury.
On the heels of a breakout Week 1 performance Sunday night against the Rams -- 5-121-1 on nine targets, plus a 13-yard carry -- Williams is tending to a health concern, which may stem from the first-half play in which he appeared to get banged up. He of course finished out the contest, but the Lions will take it easy on the third-year wide receiver as the team ramps up for Sunday's game versus the Buccaneers.

Lions' Aidan Hutchinson: Active in win
Hutchinson finished with five tackles (three solo), including 1.0 sacks, and four total quarterback hits in the Lions' 26-20 overtime win over the Rams on Sunday night.
Hutchinson ended the 2023 regular season with 11.5 sacks, seven passes defensed and three forced fumbles, a standout second-year campaign that saw him build on a strong rookie 2022 season. Judging by his performance in Week 1, the third-year pro could be ready to take another step forward in 2024, and he'll next look to make life difficult on Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers in a Week 2 home matchup.
