Jets' Blake Grupe: Won't be starting kicker Week 1
Grupe will not be the Jets' starting kicker for Sunday's regular-season opener against the Titans, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
It looked like Grupe would be the Jets' starter for 2026 after he was claimed off waivers from the Colts on Aug. 31. However, the Jets have opted to elevate Jason Sanders from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Sunday, so Grupe figures to be inactive for Week 1. Grupe made all 11 of his field-goal attempts and each of his 10 extra-point tries over his final five games of the 2025 regular season as a member of the Colts.

Jets' Jason Sanders: Elevated after winning battle
The Jets have elevated Sanders from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Sunday's game against the Titans, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Sanders won the kicking battle over Cade York this summer despite neither instilling confidence in the Jets' coaching staff. The team elected to sign Blake Grupe, who also has not shown enough to start, giving Sanders a chance in Week 1. If Sanders has a strong week, he will likely be elevated once more in Week 2 before the team must decide who will truly hold the starting job throughout the regular season.

Jets' Tim Patrick: Moved to IR
The Jets placed Patrick (groin) on injured reserve Saturday, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Patrick was ruled out ahead of Sunday's contest after Friday's practice. The wide receiver's groin injury seems to be lingering, so the 32-year-old will spend some time on IR. Patrick will be eligible to return from IR after four games, meaning Isaiah Williams and Arian Smith will likely see a greater share of reserve opportunities with the Jets' wide receiver corps.

Nwangwu (back) has been ruled out ahead of Sunday's game against the Titans.
Nwangwu was designated as doubtful after Friday's practice, so the eventual ruling that he will not suit up for Sunday's contest is not surprising. The depth running back and primary kick returner for the team continues to deal with a back injury he likely suffered during a practice session earlier in the week. With Nwangwu out, wide receiver Isaiah Williams will likely add kick return duties alongside his punt return duties in Sunday's game.

Ponds (calf) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Tennessee, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
Toward the end of training camp, there was optimism that Ponds would make his NFL regular-season debut against Tennessee. The rookie second-rounder was a limited participant in all three practices this week, but the doubtful tag indicates that he's likely not quite ready to return from a calf injury that he sustained in late July. If Ponds is ruled out for Week 1, the Jets would lose a special-teams asset and depth in the secondary behind starting corners Brandon Stephens, Jarvis Brownlee and Nahshon Wright.

Nwangwu wasn't listed on the Jets' injury report until Friday as a DNP, indicating that he may have tweaked his back in a practice session. He wasn't expected to see much playing time on offense given that he's behind Breece Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis on the depth chart. Jets' Braelon Allen: Slots into backup spot
Allen is listed second on the Jets' unofficial depth chart behind Breece Hall.
Allen worked with the starters for most of the preseason while Hall was sidelined by a groin injury. Hall practiced without limitations Wednesday, as did Isaiah Davis (knee), who is listed third on the team's unofficial depth chart. Allen is listed at 235 pounds and has reportedly bulked up to around 250. The 2024 fourth-round pick's large frame could help Allen command valuable goal-line and short-yardage work even while Hall is healthy.

Jets' Breece Hall: Expected to avoid snap count
Hall (groin) could handle a full workload in Sunday's season opener against the Titans, as Jets offensive coordinator Frank Reich said Thursday that "unless [head coach Aaron Glenn] and the training staff give us a rep count, we just go play ball," Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
Hall initially received a recovery timetable of 2-to-3 weeks after sustaining a groin strain Aug. 17. Just over three weeks has passed since that date, and Hall practiced without limitations Wednesday, suggesting he has made a full recovery. Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, the latter of whom has been cleared to return from a knee injury sustained during training camp, could factor into the game plan as change-of-pace options, but Hall is expected to lead the Jets backfield and handle his normal workload against the Titans in Week 1.
