Sorokin made 26 saves in Thursday's 5-4 win over Chicago.
The Islanders seemed to have things well in hand when they took a 5-1 lead midway through the third period and chased Arvid Soderblom from the game, but the visitors caught fire late and scored the final three goals of the night, including two by Tyler Bertuzzi in the final 70 seconds. With Semyon Varlamov (lower body) sidelined since late November, Sorokin has started seven straight games, going 4-2-1 with a 2.54 GAA and .911 save percentage. He could be feeling some fatigue, but it's not clear if the Islanders trust backup Marcus Hogberg enough to give Sorokin a breather.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: First goalie off Thursday
Sorokin was the first goalie off Thursday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports, indicating he'll start at home against the Blackhawks.
Sorokin has been relatively effective in recent outings with a 2.29 GAA and .919 save percentage over his last six appearances, but he's had to settle for a 3-2-1 record during that time. Although the Islanders' offense remains lackluster, he'll have a favorable matchup Thursday, as the Blackhawks generate just 2.39 goals per game, the third-worst mark in the league.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Gets little help in loss
Sorokin stopped 27 of 29 shots in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to the Kings, with Los Angeles' final goal getting scored into an empty net.
The Isles managed to put only 20 shots on net against Darcy Kuemper, including a measly three in the first period, and Sorokin didn't get much support in his own end either -- Kevin Fiala's game-winner in the second period was fired through a partial screen supplied by Grant Hutton. Sorokin has started six straight games since Semyon Varlamov (lower body) has been unavailable, going 3-2-1 with a 2.29 GAA and .919 save percentage, and Sorokin could keep hold of the No. 1 job even once Varlamov is healthy rather than slipping back into a timeshare.

Islanders' Ilya Sorokin: Set to start versus Kings
Sorokin is expected to get the starting nod at home against Los Angeles on Tuesday, Stefen Rosner of NHL.com reports.
Sorokin will make his sixth straight start, having gone 3-1-1 with a 2.34 GAA and one shutout. Given his strong run of play, it's possible Sorokin would have featured in each of the previous five contests anyway, but the injury to Semyon Varlamov (upper body) has left the Islanders will little choice than to roll with Sorokin in the crease. If they do decide to rest Sorokin -- which the Isles don't need to do with no back-to-back before the Christmas break -- it would fall to Marcus Hogberg to give Sorokin a night off.

Thanks to this 29-save performance, Sorokin has now recorded back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Even though the 29-year-old Russian netminder has been wildly inconsistent, the recent signs show marked improvement. He's gone 3-1-1 with a 2.34 GAA and a .916 save percentage over his last five starts, and that percentage could be even higher if it hadn't been for a 5-2 loss to Seattle, in which he gave up four goals on just 13 shots on Thursday.

Sorokin, who was coming off his first shutout of the season, had another strong game, but Montreal's Sam Montembeault was his equal. Both showed up for the battle of goaltenders. The offense's inability to provide some insurance for Sorokin proved costly, however, as Jonatan Berggren tied it up on an odd-man rush before Lucas Raymond snapped home the winner with only 52 seconds left. Sorokin is 0-2-2 over his last four starts with a 3.22 GAA and .902 save percentage, but he's also received just nine goals of support over that stretch.
