Rutta had missed San Jose's last five games after suffering an injury Nov. 22 in Seattle. The 33-year-old blueliner has one point (an assist) with a minus-11 rating over 19 games while averaging 18:37 of ice time in his first season with the Sharks.

Sharks' Jan Rutta: Nearing return to action
Rutta (undisclosed) won't play against the Devils on Friday but is expected to play at some point during the team's current six-game road trip, Max Miller of The Hockey News reports.
Rutta will be out of action for his fifth consecutive game due to his undisclosed injury. With just one point in 19 games this season, the 33-year-old blueliner shouldn't be expected to offer much in the way of offensive upside this season, making him a non-factor in fantasy contests.

Sharks' Jan Rutta: Put on IR
Rutta (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve Friday, per Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News.
Rutta has an assist, 10 hits and 36 blocks in 19 games this season. The move is presumably retroactive to Wednesday, which is when he last played, so Rutta should be eligible to be activated in time for next Thursday's contest versus Boston. In the meantime, Marc-Edouard Vlasic might draw back into the lineup.

The 33-year-old Rutta has added 14 shots on net, 29 blocked shots, 10 hits, eight PIM and a minus-11 rating. He's been a regular in the Sharks' lineup, though he's been limited to a bottom-four role.

Sharks' Jan Rutta: Blanked in Friday's road loss
Rutta ended up going scoreless in Friday's 3-0 road loss against the Hurricanes.
Rutta had a busy night, posting three shots on goal with a blocked shot and two hits while ending up with a minus-2 rating in 19:40 of ice time. He also logged a team-high 4:24 of penalty kill time. While he won't help fantasy managers in the scoring department very much, he can be useful for blocked shots and hits in deeper pools.

Sharks' Jan Rutta: Good to go
Rutta (abdomen) skated in Group C at the Sharks' first on-ice practice Thursday, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Rutta underwent core muscle surgery in April, but his availability for training camp wasn't in doubt. The 33-year-old blueliner had nine points in 56 outings with the Penguins last year, but he could receive power-play time with the Sharks, who have a lack of established scoring options on defense.

Sharks' Jan Rutta: Expected to be healthy for camp
Rutta (abdomen) "should be" ready for training camp, Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now reports.
Rutta underwent core muscle surgery in April, but it shouldn't affect his availability for his first camp as a Shark. San Jose general manager Mike Grier also noted that the 33-year-old blueliner could see some power-play time. Rutta hasn't scored a power-play point since his rookie campaign in 2017-18.

Sharks' Jan Rutta: Sent to San Jose
Rutta (abdomen) was traded to San Jose on Sunday as part of a three-team deal with Pittsburgh and Montreal.
The Sharks also obtained Mikael Granlund and a 2024 first-round pick, which is top-10 protected, from the Penguins as well as Mike Hoffman from the Canadiens. Erik Karlsson, who was the big piece in the trade, was dealt to Pittsburgh. Rutta could be ready for training camp after undergoing core muscle surgery in April. He was initially given an 8-10 week timetable for his recovery. The 33-year-old blueliner accounted for three goals, six assists, 70 blocked shots and 71 hits over 56 games last season. Rutta could occupy a spot on San Jose's second pairing going into the 2023-24 campaign.

Rutta (lower body) was on the ice with the Penguins on Tuesday but is not expected to play versus the Devils, Penguins radio play-by-play announcer Josh Getzoff reports.
Rutta has been skating with the team for a few days now but has yet to be cleared to get back into the lineup. Penguins' Jan Rutta: Skating but won't play Thursday
Rutta (lower body) skated prior to Thursday's matchup with Nashville but didn't participate in line rushes and won't be in the lineup, Seth Rorabaugh of TribLive.com reports.
Rutta will be out of action for his seventh consecutive contest due to his lingering lower-body issue. While the fact that he has begun skating is a step in the right direction, the Czech native should probably be considered questionable, at best, heading into a back-to-back versus the Bruins and Flyers on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Penguins' Jan Rutta: Not with team in Detroit
Rutta (lower body) did not travel for Tuesday's clash with the Red Wings.
Rutta will be out of action for his sixth straight contest due to his lingering lower-body problem. Prior to getting hurt, the veteran blueliner was stuck in a 33-game goal drought dating back to Nov. 23 versus Calgary. During that stretch, the Czech native notched just four assists and shouldn't be expected to offer much in the way of offensive upside even once cleared to play.

Penguins' Jan Rutta: Dealing with lower-body issue
Rutta was labeled week-to-week Monday due to his lower-body problem.
Rutta's absence, combined with that of Marcus Pettersson (lower body) and Jeff Petry (upper body) will stretch the Penguins' blue-line depth. Even when healthy, Rutta isn't exactly an offensive force considering he has just one point in his previous 11 outings. For now, Mark Friedman and Taylor Fedun will make up the bottom pairing.
