  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Out-dueled in Tuesday's loss

Hogberg turned aside 25 of 26 shots in Tuesday's 2-0 loss to the Senators, with Ottawa's final goal getting scored into an empty net. The 30-year-old netminder made his NHL debut with Ottawa in 2018-19 and did his best to deliver a revenge game against his former organization, but Adam Gaudette tipped a point shot past Hogberg in the second period, and it was all the offense Leevi Merilainen would need in the other crease. Hogberg has started two straight games while Ilya Sorokin dealt with an illness and played well, allowing only two goals on 48 shots, but Sorokin figures to reclaim the No. 1 job as soon as he's deemed fit. Semyon Varlamov (lower body) has no timeline for his return from LTIR however, and Hogberg's recent performances might earn him more consistent work as Sorokin's backup.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Facing former team Tuesday

Hogberg will be between the home pipes Tuesday versus Ottawa, per Stefen Rosner of NHL.com. Hogberg was solid in his last start, stopping 21 of 22 shots in Saturday's 2-1 win over Utah. The 30-year-old will face the team he was drafted by in 2013 -- Hogberg spent the first three years of his NHL career with the Sens. Ottawa is tied for 20th in the NHL with 2.90 goals per game.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Steady in win over Utah

Hogberg allowed one goal on 22 shots in Saturday's 2-1 win over Utah. Hogberg can't really be faulted for the goal against, as it was a tipped-in shot off the stick of Nick Schmaltz. The 30-year-old Hogberg has allowed four goals on 80 shots over four appearances (two starts) at the NHL level this year. He started Saturday because Ilya Sorokin (illness) was unavailable, and Hogberg would likely continue to see playing time should Sorokin not be healthy in time for Tuesday's home game versus the Senators.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Facing Utah

Hogberg will be between the pipes in Utah on Saturday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Hogberg will get a rare start as Ilya Sorokin (illness) has started 14 of the Islanders' last 15 games. Hogberg is 0-1-0 this season, allowing three goals on 58 shots. Utah is 24th in the NHL, averaging 2.83 goals per game in 2024-25.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Loses in first start of season

Hogberg gave up three goals on 41 shots in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Penguins. Making his first start at the NHL level since April 2021, Hogberg gave up goals in the opening seven minutes of each period and was tagged with the loss. He's made three appearances this season, though the previous two came in relief where he stopped a total of 17 shots without giving up a goal, so there's not much of a sample to see what he might bring to the table as a backup. That said, the fact that he made 38 saves is something that can't be overlooked easily. He's likely to remain the backup to Ilya Sorokin as long as Semyon Varlamov (lower body) remains on long-term injured reserve.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Defending crease Sunday

Hogberg will guard the road goal against Pittsburgh on Sunday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Hogberg will get the second half of the Islanders' back-to-back after Ilya Sorokin played in Saturday's 6-3 win over the Penguins. Hogberg's last NHL start came against Vancouver on April 28, 2021, when he was a member of the Senators. The 30-year-old netminder has a 9-17-9 record with a 3.34 GAA and an .896 save percentage in 44 NHL regular-season appearances. Pittsburgh ranks 15th in the league with 3.08 goals per game in 2024-25.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Needed in relief Tuesday

Hogberg stopped all six shots he faced after replacing Ilya Sorokin to begin the third period of Tuesday's 4-0 loss to the Hurricanes. It's the second time in seven games since his promotion at the beginning of the month that Hogberg has been called upon to spell Sorokin, and the backup goalie has turned aside all 17 shots sent his way in those appearances. The Islanders are off until Saturday when they head to Toronto, but Semyon Varlamov (lower body) isn't expected to rejoin the team until the following week. Sorokin will likely get the nod for that contest, but if coach Patrick Roy decided to give him an extended rest, Hogberg would be in line for his first start of the season.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Recalled on emergency basis

Hogberg was recalled by the Islanders on an emergency basis Thursday. Since Semyon Varlamov is considered day-to-day due to a lower-body injury, Hogberg will join the NHL club to serve as the backup to Ilya Sorokin during Thursday's home game against the Kraken. Hogberg could be in the mix to draw a start over the weekend if Varlamov isn't back to full health, as the Islanders have a back-to-back set with a home game against Carolina on Saturday followed by a road matchup against Ottawa on Sunday. Hogberg hasn't appeared in the NHL since the 2020-21 campaign, when he posted a 4-7-0 record, 3.74 GAA and .876 save percentage over 14 appearances with the Senators.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Sent down Monday

Hogberg was returned to AHL Bridgeport on Monday. Hogberg's stint with the big club was brief, as Semyon Varlamov appears to have moved past his lower-body injury. Hogberg hasn't made an appearance in the NHL since the 2020-21 campaign with Ottawa.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Called up Monday

Hogberg was recalled by the Islanders on an emergency basis for Monday's practice session. Hogberg was sent to the AHL ahead of the regular season, and he's posted a 2-4-3 record, 2.97 GAA and .908 save percentage over 10 appearances with Bridgeport to begin the year. He'll provide goaltending depth for the Islanders since Semyon Varlamov (lower body) is considered day-to-day.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Hits waiver wire

Hogberg was waived by the Islanders on Sunday, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Hogberg appeared in two preseason contests for New York -- he posted a .929 save percentage and a 2.02 GAA in 44:35 of ice time. The Swedish netminder hitting waivers could be an indication that Ilya Sorokin (back) is healthy ahead of the upcoming campaign. Hogberg's last NHL appearance was in 2020-21 with Ottawa, when he posted a 4-7-0 record, .876 save percentage and 3.74 GAA in 14 regular-season appearances.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: In goal Thursday

Hogberg will start in goal on the road for a preseason game versus the Flyers on Thursday, Andrew Gross of Newsday reports. Hogberg will get his second preseason start after allowing two goals on 17 shots versus the Devils in his first game Sunday. The 29-year-old is attempting a North America comeback after spending three years in his native Sweden. Hogberg is likely to begin the year with AHL Bridgeport, though he could win the backup job over Jakub Skarek if Ilya Sorokin (back) is not healthy for Opening Night.

  • Islanders' Marcus Hogberg: Inks two-year deal

Hogberg signed a two-year contract with the Islanders on Tuesday. Hogberg had a solid season in the SHL, logging a .914 save percentage and a 2.51 goals against average in 40 appearances. The 29-year-old will look to regain his touch in the NHL after spending three years in the SHL. He will attempt to make the roster come October and could even be the team's backup netminder should Semyon Varlamov or Ilya Sorokin not return to the fold.

  • Marcus Hogberg: Returning to Sweden

Hogberg inked a four-year contract with Linkoping HC (Sweden) on Thursday. Given the length of Hogberg's contract, it seems unlikely the 26-year-old netminder will return to the NHL at any point. He appeared in 42 games for the Senators over three years, posting a 9-17-9 record, .894 save percentage and 3.39 GAA.

  • Marcus Hogberg: Won't receive qualifying offer

Per Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Hogberg won't be qualified by the Senators, which means he'll become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Hogberg hasn't been great in limited action this season, going 4-7-0 while posting a sub-par 3.74 GAA and .876 save percentage in 14 appearances. Matt Murray is locked in as Ottawa's No. 1 netminder, and Filip Gustavsson will likely take over as the Senators' No. 2 option next season, making Hogberg expendable. Nonetheless, Hogberg should still be able to secure a two-way deal with an NHL club for the 2021-22 campaign.

  • Senators' Marcus Hogberg: Cruises to win over Canucks

Hogberg turned aside 19 shots in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Canucks. The Sens built a 3-0 lead early in the second period and Hogberg never let Vancouver get within a goal as he picked up his second straight win and fifth of the season. Despite the recent success, the 26-year-old netminder is still saddled with a rough 3.74 GAA and .876 save percentage through 14 appearances, but with Matt Murray (lower body) sidelined, the No. 1 job in Ottawa belongs to Hogberg by default,

  • Senators' Marcus Hogberg: Gets starting nod

Hogberg will start between the pipes in Wednesday's home game versus Vancouver, Ben Kuzma of The Vancouver Province reports. Hogberg was sharp in his last start Monday against the Canucks, stopping 25 of 26 shots en route to a 2-1 victory. The 26-year-old goaltender will try to pick up a second straight win in a rematch with the same Vancouver squad Wednesday.

  • Senators' Marcus Hogberg: Sharp in Monday's win

Hogberg stopped 25 shots in Monday's 2-1 win over the Canucks. Rookie defenseman Olli Juolevi got a puck past him late in the first period, but otherwise Hogberg had Vancouver's number in this one. The netminder recorded his first win since Feb. 15, and while he was little used in between those victories, Hogberg suddenly sits at the top of Ottawa's depth chart with Matt Murray (lower body) and Anton Forsberg (lower body) both on the mend. Through 13 appearances this season, Hogberg carries a poor 3.82 GAA and .877 save percentage.

  • Senators' Marcus Hogberg: Takes loss in relief outing

Hogberg gave up two goals on 20 shots in relief of Matt Murray (lower body) in Saturday's 4-2 loss to the Canucks. Hogberg was forced to come into the game after Murray was hurt in the second period. The 26-year-old Hogberg immediately surrendered a power-play goal to Brock Boeser, and Tanner Pearson added the decisive tally in the third period. Through 12 appearances, Hogberg has a 2-7-0 record with a 4.14 GAA and an .869 save percentage in 12 appearances. With Anton Forsberg (lower body) also out Saturday, Hogberg's the only healthy goalie on the Senators roster -- they'll likely need to recall a netminder before facing the Canucks again Monday.

  • Senators' Marcus Hogberg: Rises to active roster

Hogberg was promoted to Ottawa's active roster Tuesday. Hogberg hasn't seen NHL action since Feb. 18 versus Toronto due to a lower-body injury, but he could be back between the pipes for the Senators as soon as Wednesday against the Oilers. He's gone 2-5-0 while posting an ugly 4.34 GAA and .859 save percentage in 10 appearances with Ottawa this season.
