  • Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Dishes two power-play helpers

Ovechkin notched two power-play assists, five shots on goal and a minus-2 rating in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Ducks. Ovechkin set up two Tom Wilson power-play markers, with the latter of those goals standing as the game-winner. Prior to Thursday, Ovechkin had gone four games without a point. The 38-year-old winger is at a modest five tallies and nine assists through 20 contests this season. He's added 77 shots on net, 42 hits and a minus-1 rating. It's unlikely Ovechkin shoots a meager 6.5 percent all season, but it's also possible his age is starting to catch up to him.

Ovechkin scored two goals in a 4-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday. He opened the scoring at the mid-point of the first. He also scored into an empty net. Ovie is the fourth player in Caps' history to have a multigoal game at age 38 years or older. • Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Gets first goal of season

Ovechkin scored a power-play goal Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to Toronto. He fired 14 shots. It was the most non-Ovechkin goal that Ovie could score. He wired a shot from his office that was stopped, and as the play developed, he parked on the right post. Ovechkin then tapped in a hard pass from John Carlson behind a sprawling Joseph Woll with only 11 seconds left in the second. Much has been discussed about the 38-year-old's apparent decline, especially in shots, but his 14 shots suddenly change that story, at least on the surface. Still, new NHL Edge data suggest there may be genuine slippage in his game. Ovechkin's maximum shot speed has dropped from 101.52 mph in 2021-22 to 91.06 this season. And his max skating speed has declined from 22.16 mph to 19.91 in the same span. The sample size this season is small, but even the drop from 2021-22 to 2022-23 seems significant.

  • Capitals' Alex Ovechkin: Snags helper in loss

Ovechkin recorded an assist and three hits in Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Senators. For the second game in a row, Ovechkin failed to put a shot on goal. He was at least able to get on the scoresheet with a helper on John Carlson's tally. It's too soon to fret about Ovechkin's quiet start to the season, but the Capitals' offense is abysmal without the captain firing on all cylinders. He's supplied seven hits, four shots on goal and a minus-2 rating through three outings.
