  • Canucks' Arturs Silovs: On ice Thursday

Silovs (knee) participated in Thursday's informal skate with his teammates, Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 reports.

Silovs was held out of Olympic qualifying matches with Latvia due to knee inflammation but appears to be trending in the right direction. The Canucks may need the 23-year-old netminder to start the season between the pipes, as No. 1 backstop Thatcher Demko is also dealing with a knee issue. For his part, Silovs has just nine regular-season games under his belt but should be expected to see upwards of 30 outings in 2024-25 -- perhaps more depending on how long Demko is shelved. Vancouver kicks off its preseason schedule Sept. 24 against Seattle, which could be Silovs first start of the campaign if his knee is given the all-clear.

  • Canucks' Arturs Silovs: Dealing with knee issue

Silovs has knee ligament inflammation and will not play for Latvia in the 2026 Olympic qualifiers, Patrick Johnston of the Province reports Thursday.

After being left off of Latvia's roster on Wednesday, there's now a reason behind Silovs' removal from the team. In Latvia's press release, they made note that this injury would prevent Silovs from performing to the highest of his capabilities. It'll be something to monitor, but this could imply that Silovs' injury isn't overly serious, but rather more of a precautionary move. The 23-year-old is expected to be Thatcher Demko's top backup in Vancouver for the 2024-25 season, who is also currently dealing with a lingering knee issue.

  • Canucks' Sammy Blais: Agrees to PTO

Blais inked a professional tryout agreement with Vancouver on Thursday.

In addition to his PTO, Blais signed a one-year, minor-league contract with AHL Abbotsford. At a minimum, the 28-year-old winger will have a spot with the organization's minor-league system but will be hoping to secure at least a two-way deal coming out of training camp.

  • Canucks' Thatcher Demko: No timetable for return

Demko is progressing in his recovery from a knee injury, but it's unclear when he'll return to full strength, per Sportsnet 650 on Tuesday.

Demko appeared in one postseason outing against Nashville before he injured his knee. The 28-year-old's rehab has taken longer than expected, so there's speculation that Vancouver will take a look at the goaltender market in the event that Demko isn't ready to start the 2024-25 season. There's also no clarity on whether Demko had a surgical procedure to address his knee issue at this point. In 51 appearances in 2023-24, Demko was 35-14-2 with a .918 save percentage and a 2.45 GAA.

  • Canucks' Daniel Sprong: Inks one-year deal

Sprong signed a one-year, $975,000 contract with Vancouver on Saturday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.

Sprong generated 18 goals and 43 points in 76 regular-season outings for Detroit in 2023-24. As a member of the Canucks in a bottom-six role, he should register similar numbers in the upcoming campaign. Sprong also could see playing time on the second power-play unit.

  • Canucks' Arturs Silovs: Secures two-year contract

Silovs signed a two-year, $1.7 million contract with Vancouver on Tuesday.

Silovs posted a 3-0-1 record with a 2.47 GAA and an .881 save percentage in four regular-season appearances with the Canucks in 2023-24. He also went 5-5 in the playoffs with a 2.91 GAA and an .898 save percentage in 10 outings. Silovs will likely begin the 2024-25 campaign as Thatcher Demko's (knee) backup.

  • Canucks' Brock Boeser: Ready for traning camp

Boeser (illness) has resumed training and will be available for the start of training camp, Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 reports Monday.

Boeser missed Game 7 against the Oilers on May 20 due to a blood clotting issue but appears to have fully recovered. During the regular season, the 27-year-old saw action in 81 games in which he set new career highs in goals (40), points (73) and power-play points (25). Boeser should hold on to his first-line role ahead of the recently signed Jake DeBrusk -- though falling to the second line and playing with Elias Pettersson wouldn't exactly be a demotion.

  • Canucks' Vincent Desharnais: Signs two-year contract

Desharnais signed a two-year, $4 million contract with Vancouver on Monday.

Desharnais compiled one goal, 10 assists, 41 shots on net, 122 blocked shots and 134 hits in 78 regular-season contests with Edmonton in 2023-24. He will serve as a depth defender for the Canucks.

  • Canucks' Nathan Smith: Agrees to one-year deal

Smith penned a one-year, two-way contract with the Canucks on Monday.

Smith has just 14 games of NHL experience, all with the Coyotes, but has primarily served as a minor-league option. Selected by the Jets in the third round of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, the 25-year-old center will be hard-pressed to make the Opening Night roster for Vancouver. Instead, expect Smith to spend the bulk of the 2024-25 season with AHL Abbotsford.

  • Canucks' Jiri Patera: Signs two-year contract

Patera agreed to terms on a two-year, two-way deal with Vancouver on Monday.

Patera may get a look ahead of the 2024-25 campaign but would have to put together a fantastic training camp to unseat Arturs Silovs for the No. 2 job in Vancouver. Instead, Patera figures to continue developing in the minors with AHL Abbotsford.

  • Canucks' Derek Forbort: Pens one-year deal

Forbort inked a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Vancouver on Monday.

Forbort played in just 35 regular-season games for the Bruins last season, registering zero goals, four assists and 22 shots on net. The blueliner was more productive in terms of defensive stats, putting up 65 blocked shots and 68 hits. Given his lack of offensive upside, Forbort likely won't be on the radar for most fantasy managers heading into the 2024-25 campaign.

  • Canucks' Kiefer Sherwood: Heading north

Sherwood signed a two-year, $3 million contract with the Canucks on Monday.

Sherwood had 10 goals, 27 points, 41 PIM and 234 hits in 68 regular-season appearances with the Predators in 2023-24. He's slated to serve in a bottom-six role with Vancouver.

  • Canucks' Danton Heinen: Inks two-year contract

Heinen signed a two-year, $4.5 million contract with Vancouver on Monday.

Heinen produced 17 goals, 36 points, 119 shots on net and 83 hits in 74 regular-season contests for Boston in 2023-24. The 28-year-old forward will likely occupy a bottom-six role with the Canucks in 2024-25.

  • Canucks' Jake DeBrusk: Earns seven-year deal

DeBrusk penned a seven-year, $38.5 million contract with Vancouver on Monday.

DeBrusk appears to be the consolation prize for the Canucks after they missed out on Jake Guentzel, who the team was heavily linked to before he signed with Tampa Bay. The 27-year-old DeBrusk came just one goal shy of reaching the 20-goal threshold for the third straight season, posting 19 goals and 21 helpers over 80 regular-season games in 2023-24. DeBrusk should be in line for a top-six role that will see him playing with either Elias Pettersson or J.T. Miller, either of which should help bolster DeBrusk's offensive output.

  • Canucks' Jett Woo: Signs one-year contract

Woo signed a one-year, two-way contract with Vancouver on Sunday.

Woo accumulated seven goals, 31 points and 93 PIM in 62 regular-season contests for AHL Abbotsford in 2023-24. The 23-year-old defender doesn't have any NHL experience yet. Woo will probably spend most, if not all, of the 2024-25 campaign in the minors.

  • Canucks' Melvin Fernstrom: High-scoring winger joins Orcas

Fernstrom was the 93rd overall pick by the Canucks in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft on Saturday.

Fernstrom destroyed the Swedish U20 junior league this past season, posting 31 goals and 63 points in 45 games, good for third overall in league scoring. He also got into six scoreless contests with Orebro's SHL club. Fernstrom's greatest asset is his shot. He consistently beat goaltenders from distance, something that's rare among forwards at his age. The rest of Fernstrom's game is a work in progress, but the finishing ability is legitimate, and that makes the young Swede a quality long-term lottery ticket for Vancouver.
